It just blows my mind that this keeps happening--SM treats its employees like shit, so much so that the employees take legal action to get away from them--and yet the company (and the industry at large) learns absolutely nothing. They didn't learn anything from Shinhwa, they didn't learn anything from Han Geng, they didn't learn anything from JYJ, and they won't learn anything from Kris. Nothing's going to change at SM or industry-wide until the law forces them to change or until they can't make money off of mistreating dreaming young people, and I don't foresee either of those things happening any time soon. I'm glad Kris is getting out while he can. I'm sure he didn't make the decision lightly.

What I really want to know is whether the female idols are treated better or (more likely) they're treated so much worse that they have less leverage (emotional or otherwise) to leave when they want to. Because it's significant to me that only guys have gotten out.

I'm actually writing the Myungsoo/Hongbin cowboy AU. And it has somehow exploded in my mind to become this huge 'verse and it's the most ridiculous thing ever and I NEVER ASKED FOR THIS.

The setup I’m thinking is: Sunggyu either inherited or bought a ranch, though he knows nothing about ranching (so Woohyun ends up doing most of the actual decision-making), and he and his kid brother Sungjong live in the big house. All the other members of Infinite and VIXX are the ranch hands, and Hakyeon is the ranch foreman. Sungjong and Hoya are clearly in love but haven’t actually gotten around to acting on that yet. Taekwoon is a horse whisperer (and Myungsoo is the other wrangler) and pretty much married to Hakyeon.

The next ranch over is owned by badass lady owner Gummi, who knows everything about running a ranch (and who really wants to have lots of babies and raise them to take over her operation), and her ranch a foreman is Ellin, while the twins and Soyul and the K-Much guys are the other cowhands. Sungyeol is obviously obsessed with Ellin but pretends she’s annoying even though she’s the one who can’t get him to go away. Sunggyu is pretty head-over-heels for Gummi, but it’s unclear whether she’ll ever give him the time of day, though she does thoroughly enjoy laughing at his complete lack of knowledge about absolutely anything to do with ranching. Cowboy Loki is definitely in love with her, too. Probably at some point, Soyul will turn Myungsoo and Hongbin into her boy toys.

Also, somewhere, the 9 Muses own and run their own ranch, and Ken cries and pops an unfortunate boner whenever he sees Kyungri the rodeo queen riding by on her horse. Hyuk has a ~thing for one of the others (Sera? Sungah? Both? Sam and Erin and Hyuna and Eunji are obviously married). Sweet farmer Shinwoo is courting Hyemi. Sungjong and Hoya are definitely both in love with Minha. And Dongwoo is dating tavern-owner Ailee, who owns half the town and never, ever has trouble in her establishment because she's faster on the trigger than anyone else in the West. Narsha is a brothel madam and makes Sunggyu cry on the regular whenever he goes to visit her, but he can't stay away. JeA is the crazy sheriff who forgets she's the sheriff and Gain is the schoolmarm who has a ~thing for Miryo, the deputy who really is the one who keeps the peace. Maybe Key is Narsha's second-in-command who doesn't take clients himself now, except for Woohyun.

This could potentially keep going forever. I HAVE TO STOP.

*goes back to writing ridiculous fic*

I repeat: OH MY GOD.

I think Spica's "You Don't Love Me" may have just been kicked out of first place on my list of favorite songs of the year.

OH MY GOD.

SOMEONE JUST SENT ME THIS ON TUMBLR AND I'M FREAKING OUT.

Okay, first of all: MINSEOK. DARLING BOY. I LOVE HIM TO DEATH. This is the one good thing coming out of the Woollim-SM whatever-it-is. MINSEOK IN WOOLLIM STUFF.

I can't hear the music (at work) but I'm told her voice is really great. But I'm a bit confused. Are we going to be seeing Jin at all? That's Kim You Jung in the video, but she's not the same person as our Jin who's song this is, right? I WANT TO SEE HER FACE, WOOLLIM. (I do love that the mv is going to be a mini-movie, though.)

BUT DAMMIT WOOLLIM JUST DEBUT YOUR GIRL GROUP ALREADY. I love Baby Soul, I love Jiae, I'm sure I'll love this girl, JUST GIVE ME MY GIRL GROUP ALREADY. And then let them do all the interactions with Infinite so I can ship everything omg.

I cannot believe I've been waiting for this girl group for so damn long. *sigh*

[New 'celestial mechanics' chapter coming in a bit. I had to pause for this.]

Okay, apparently someone's going around editing multiple kpop wikipedia articles, because 9Muses' page no longer has the little Hangul/real name/DOB chart either! And neither does Shinee's!

miss A's, Crayon Pop's, and f(x)'s are still there (and I've always loved that f(x)'s has the little flags for each of the ladies' country of origin) and while BEG's doesn't have the dobs, I don't think it has for a while?

Anyway, I am going to be watching my faves' pages closely. I might need to make myself a spreadsheet because this is just obnoxious. How am I supposed to know whether my characters need to call the other characters hyung/oppa/noona/unnie or not????? (I almost had Minha calling Hoya oppa before I looked it up and was reminded that SHE'S 91 LINE TOO AND THEY'RE CHINGUS.)((I think the only reason Key hasn't made her part of his posse is because she intimidates him with her perfection. HE'S JUST JEALOUS.))(((Also on the profile I found, Sera's still listed as leader and it made me want to cry. All my 9Muses feels.)))

To make this post not a total waste of space, I invite anyone who enjoys watching gorgeous ladies be badass to watch this teaser. BEST EVER.

I AM SO DELIGHTED.

These are for Kyrie, but anyone can use them. If you want a different background/color/crop/whatever for something here, let me know. I can do that.

THIS IS THE BEST OF ALL IDEAS. Basically it's to get us to share the things we love with each other: you make a wish-list of things you wish more people would watch/listen to/read/write, and then you go through other people's lists and say, "I can totally watch ____!" or "I will definitely read ____!" and make each others' dreams come true! Could anything be more delightful? Y'all should all head over there and join! And then come back here and read about why you should give these things I love a chance.

MY LIST! )
lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([sufbb] over your shoulder)
First: some recs!

+ [livejournal.com profile] indiesnopp is writing the Fic I Didn’t Know I Always Wanted: Hyunsoo from Shut Up! Flower Boy Band meets a non-Infinite-member Lee Sungyeol. YES THAT’S RIGHT. EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED. And it is so good so far. So good. Hyunsoo is his prickly little secretly-vulnerable self (ANGRY PUPPY!) with Byunghee issues and anger problems, and Sungyeol is Sungyeol, and there is nothing about this I don’t love. Y’all should read it. It is here.

+ [livejournal.com profile] aerintine has written something else I didn’t know I always wanted, which is long Matt/Rebekah fic. It is perfect and wonderful and you should all read it. It is here. [Note: those of you on my flist who did TVD Big Bang: I still have your fics open in various tabs. I am definitely going to read them and give you feedback! Hopefully soon! Holidays are approaching, after all!)

+ [livejournal.com profile] theramble, who along with [livejournal.com profile] parkslady has been trying to win me over to the One Direction Side of the Force for, like, ever has written a 1D introduction post. WITH META. IN SECTIONS BECAUSE IT’S LONG. You people do understand how much I love meta, especially, apparently, real people meta. I am just so myself: constant obsession with narrative structure and imposing it on the real world even though people resist that sort of thing. Whatever. This post is DELIGHTFUL. And it is here.

+ Also I am reccing myself. I know probably most of you are sick and tired of hearing about my kpop problem, but y’all. But y’all. There is so much to love here. And I have put together a playlist of my favorite kpop videos, and I think even if the music isn’t to your liking or if you’re just sick of my fannishness, you might still be able to find some stuff you’re interested in. I’ve included little descriptions below, so you can skip around and find the ones you think you might like (DYSTOPIAN BADASSERY. QUEER KIDS IN LOVE WITH THEIR BFFS! BADASS LADIES DANCING! Whatever!). I hope some of you find some stuff you enjoy! It is here.

descriptions of the vids are here )

+ Also, this is not a rec, but I’ve been writing het!porn (gender!swap) lately for the first time and cut for not very tmi at all discussion of writing porn )

+ Also-also: my family is going to Florida the week after my birthday AND I WILL BE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD. You people who haven’t been don’t understand, but it is possible to love Disney World as an adult even if you don’t care very much about Disney. The Magic Kingdom is fun and I don't much care about Animal Kingdom but EPCOT AND MGM, Y'ALL. I could live in those parks. I love them so so much. EPCOT is like a theme park for nerdy people: different countries and rides about science and everything is nerdy and nothing hurts. And MGM is all about the movies, from Star Wars to the Muppets, and I love it too. This will be my fourth time going, I think? And I get just as excited as I did when I was 10 and was getting ready to go for the first time. And so do my parents and little sister. We're all very excited.

And I will be going to Harry Potter World. Yes, you're jealous.

So anyway, that's the thing I'm majorly looking forward to at the moment. How are y'all? Life treating you well? Excited about upcoming holidays? What's going on with y'all?

ahem

Okay, I have officially decided what my ideal drama (that's never, ever, ever going to happen) for Sungyeol to star in is. [livejournal.com profile] indiesnopp had come up with the BRILLIANT idea of a show about supermodels who are also spies starring Sungyeol and the boys from SUFBB, and then I saw these two pictures and it all exploded in my mind:

For those of you who have any interest at all in talk about beauty standards/fashion/Korean culture/kpop, this video is worth checking out. A British model heads to Seoul to look into fashion week there for Vice and talks to a bunch of random people about fashion in Seoul. Featuring the world's shortest and most bizarre interview with Infinite, the most polite punk you'll ever meet, a rockabilly barber, and couples' matching underwear. Plus some really sad stuff about beauty standards and plastic surgery.

It's a mishmash of interesting things, and what I particularly liked was the people she talks to who aren't in the entertainment industry. Mostly because everything I know about Korean culture has been filtered through kdramas/kpop, so getting to hear from normal people in a nice change.

There's some stuff I learned and some stuff that broke my heart, and did I mention that the Infinite interview is really strange? It was clearly filmed at the time they were filming the bts stuff for the Second Invasion DVD so the styling is very familiar, and it's so strange to try to look at them through the eyes of someone who has no idea who they are.

There's some quite uncomfortably graphic plastic surgery stuff starting at about 25 minutes in, so you might want to avert your eyes if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

Anyway: check it out.

NEW OBSESSION ALERT:

Seriously, watch this video. It made my whole night. And I think I've finally found ~my girl group. Fei (the one with the curly hair) is my QUEEN, but all the ladies seem super awesome! (I already loved Suzy because she played this absolutely wonderful hbic character in Dream High. That drama was just decent, but her character was GREAT.) I was bouncing along with this song on my way to work, it's so damn delightful.

Lyric translations here. What I love about this song is this is a woman who says, "I don't want to be a burden to my parents [note: ONLY IN A KPOP SONG], so I work really hard for what I have, and it may not be a lot, but I know how to be content. I can live well without you so you better not be all talk, you better take this seriously." I find that really delightful.

Also: I am FOUR ICONS AWAY from reaching my limit. This is distressing to me. That's too close for comfort.
