My friend yutaan makes amazing paper art and also does commissions a few times a year. In the past, I've been lucky enough to buy some The Untamed minis of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian and also of Jiang Cheng and they bring me great joy.

And when she opened up this round of commissions I was like, "Wait. What if I got more minis of favorite characters?"

Well, I asked, and she made! And they are as delightful as I thought they would be!

And best of all:

They are in the mail on their way to me and I am very happy!

I recently got a beautiful edition of The Secret Garden illustrated by Tasha Tudor. I've always loved Tudor, both her books/illustrations and her lifestyle¹ and it's a delight to own this book.

It got me thinking about illustrators whose pictures really stick in my mind. I'm very basic in my tastes; I don't tend to be into stuff that's too experimental or avant-garde tbh.

Many of my favorites actually illustrated chapter books for children. These tend to be line drawings, among which my favorites are:
+ Beth and Joe Krush (The Borrowers series, Gone-Away Lake, at least one All-of-a-Kind Family book)
+ John R. Neill (the Oz books)
+ Vera Neville (the older Betsy-Tacy books)

But of course picture books are the real world of illustrators. These are more about colors for me. Some of my favorites (both from my childhood and ones I've discovered through reading to my niblings) are:
+ Fred H. Crump (fairytale retellings)
+ Jill Barklem (Brambly Hedge)
+ Molly Idle (Flora and the [Bird] series)
+ Tasha Tudor (Pumpkin Moonshine)
+ Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar)
+ Ezra Jack Keats (The Snowy Day)
+ James Gurney (Dinotopia)
+ Aaron Becker (the Worldless books)

I am also very fond of the covers illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon, which are not my normal style of art but are so striking and memorable that I adore them. Especially the ones for Monica Furlong's books.

Note that this isn't a list of favorite books from my childhood--I'm talking specifically about the pictures.

Please share with me some beloved illustrators from your life!

¹ Now that I think about it, she basically invented cottage core. She would do NUMBERS on Instagram today.

+ Being Human is most definitely an entirely different show now, and I can’t decide whether it’s going to be AMAZING or a hot mess. I trust Whithouse more than I do 95% of showrunners, but we’ll just have to see. I’m definitely giving it a chance because A) Annie is still the best ever, especially now that Mitchell’s gone [don’t miss you, babe!], B) Michael Socha’s sad, sad eyebrows give me feelings, and C) there’s some crazy world-building stuff going on that could potentially be awesome. So we’ll see.

+ I’m thinking of giving up tumblr for Lent. Mostly because the very idea of doing so makes me want to scream, so I know that it’s something good to give up. I could give up chocolate or something without thinking about it, but that’s not the point. Plus, tumblr takes up a significant portion of my life that could (honestly) be better employed. So we’ll see. Maybe that will happen.

+ I just got a canvas to paint something for over my parents’ bed, and I’m super excited about it. I haven’t painted since high school, but I miss it loads. I’m mostly worried I have lost ALL ability, but I guess we’ll see. If I’m not horrified by the result, I’ll take a picture and show y’all. Now I just have to buy some oils (UUUUUUGH WHY SO EXPENSIVE).

+ It’s allegedly going to get cold again. Since we’ve been enjoying a nice stretch of 65 degree days, I am petrified with fear at the idea of it dipping back below 50. NOT OKAY. Winter is stupid.

+ I’ve been, like, immersing myself in all things Nerdfighteria the past week or so, and I had forgotten how much I enjoy the Green brothers. And it occurred to me that I still haven’t read any of John Green’s books, because as we all know, I don’t really read Here and Now books? If it’s about contemporary America and doesn’t have loads of supernatural elements, I’m usually not that interested in reading it. But I have put a hold on The Fault in Our Stars at the library, so I will be reading it once I get ahold of it. I feel it is my duty as a Nerdfighter, you know.

+ It really annoys me that I never know whether a new episode of my shows will be on in a given week. It’s frustrating as anything. Because I never know whether I’ve missed an episode or whether there wasn’t a new one this week or what. They should quit with this “sometimes we air it, sometimes we don’t” thing and just do it in blocks. Take a break in the winter or whatever, sure. BUT AIR THINGS CONSISTENTLY OMG THIS IS SO ANNOYING TO ME.

+ Obviously, my life isn't terribly exciting at the moment. If yours is, tell me about it.
