lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([btvs] slayer)
So I just finished watching “The Body.”  And I don’t think there are any words to describe it except to say that I think every single decision Joss made was absolutely the right one.

I know I’ve never seen anything like this on television.  And I can’t think of anything like it in the movies either.  The thing it comes closest to is A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis which is the most honest, real view of mourning that I’ve ever read.  No frills or forcing lessons into it.  Just pain.

A reaction post to Season 3 and 4 is forthcoming with lots of squeeing and anger and other such fun stuff, but I felt like this episode deserved its own post.  Because it just is that powerful.

This post was so long that I have to break it into two parts.  Like a season finale!

In one sentence: Season 3 is fantastic and Season 4 isn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.  Nathaniel, who I adore, always says that Season 3 is the greatest season of anything ever (but then, Faith is his favorite character from anything ever, so that explains a lot), and I’m not sure I agree with that.  Veronica Mars Season 1 and Friday Night Lights Season 1 are both better, but I’m perfectly prepared to let Buffy Season 5 take first place (and as I’m about halfway through, it’s definitely entered the top five).

And everyone always complains about Season 4, saying it’s horrific and, except for “Hush,” you should just skip it.  So I was sort of dreading it.  But I liked it quite a lot.  It’s still better than Season 1.

Yay for thoughts by episode!

Y'all, I must write for television someday.  I swear, one night you'll be watching television and the episode will end and you'll think "Dang, that was great television" and then the screen will fade to black and then you'll see "Executive Producer" and then my name and you will all love it!

And then my shows will be on DVD and I'll get to do lots and lots of commentaries for them and other dorky people will watch them.  And it will be awesome.
