10. Are you impulsive, or do you take time to make decisions?

I take time for the most part. However, I've felt pressured from time to time about making up my mind. Then I sometimes make a decision that I later regret. I need to make decisions on my own time, not someone else's time. Basically, I need to stand my ground and take the time I need. The only time I'm impulsive is when I'm shopping for baby things. I can't say no to myself. I'm terrible. So I guess I am impulsive. 😁😂🤣

ooops I missed posting yesterday. Well, yesterday was more of an attempt to write more evals and dozing in the car. After Miss R went to bed we did manage to finish watching Free Guy, which continues to be a meh movie. I'm glad I watched it first on the plane, because that's really the degree of engagement it deserves. I think I also kind of told Spouse the best parts, so what was left were the not-funny parts.

Oh, and last night was the usual comickers meetup, so I got to work on the citizenship comic for a bit, which was nice.

And today, I finished all of my evals, yay! I was mostly sustained by chocolate, though I also rewarded myself by buying some sparkling water. I've always been a flat water person my entire life, but starting last year I've been strangely enjoying sparkling water. I think what it is is that for hydration, I definitely want flat water -- it just goes down so smooth and I don't have to think about it. But since I don't drink alcohol or soda, sparkling water is like, a nice option for special occasions, when I just want some bubbles in my mouth. :3 In the process I found out that my state actually has a 5 cent tax on cans?? Technically you can get that money back when you take it to a recycling facility, but also, I just recycle it like normal, which means that the can tax is just a tax. Eh.

Sunday is going to be the taiko new year's performance, and usually we make onigiri to bring, but that always takes 3-4 hours in the morning, and I don't think we have time, since we'd have to leave at 8:30am or so. So I was thinking maybe I can make fried wontons? Or maybe some mochi? (Although there's going to be mochi-making at the event). Maybe I can make some rice krispies onigiri? Or maybe just buy a lot of oranges and senbei? Wait! We can bring goma-ae! That's Japanese *and* it keeps well.

Anyways, it's hitting me belatedly that it's Friday night. I should probably try to draw some more, but all I want to do is read some batfam fics and then sleep.

Oh! Some fics I read yesterday:

I enjoyed wetsocks' fics, they're short and cute: https://archiveofourown.org/users/Nicky_boy/pseuds/wetsocks/works?fandom_id=236208 .
- I especially liked the JJ one, where it's snapshots of Tim coming back to himself through a series of time skips as he shifts between himself and JJ. I just love the idea of JJ being integrated and accepted into the Batfam as much as Tim is.
- I laughed a lot at Turtles all the way down, which is told through a series of text chats, and is basically Jason accidentally getting Donatello as a temporary roommate. Jason is in peak form here, blocking Dick and Bruce at the end of every convo, etc. Tim and Donatello do a lot of hacking, and there's some great moments, such as where Donatello assumes that Batman is a Bat-man mutant, because *his* dad is a rat-man mutant, lol.
- And for the enjoyers of ye typical Tim Drake angst where he feels like he's unwanted and then everyone gives him hugs, there's this one, nice simple h/c catharsis

I also reread Draskireis' (Progress is) A Comfortable disease because they posted a new chapter. Basically a Tim who is 27 and has been saddled with WE for the past 10 years finally hits breaking point and decides to hop universes. He lands in a universe where he's 17 years in the past and his in-universe self is 10. He then proceeds to pretend to be Tim's uncle and blackmail Janet into letting him get custody of Tim. He also gets a therapist, steals from Lex Luthor, prevents Joker from existing, and does a bunch of plots. But he manifestly has major trust issues (which he's going to therapy for, phew), dissociates frequently, and he's also left behind a bajillion contingency plans in his old universe that is basically wreaking havoc. It's like ... feral Tim Drake except he's 27 and jaded. Oh, and now the in-universe Tiny Tim is also doing feral plotting, so it's like, ... oh no, there's 2 of them.

+ Work has been bonkers for the last few days. Oh my fuck. It's like everybody in multiple departments decided they need me to do X, Y, and Z, and they need it done NOW NOW NOW. Thankfully my coworker will be back from vacation next week, but I've done more OT in the past few days than I've done in my entire time here.

+ The local library is doing an "Explore romance subgenres!" challenge. It's been kind of interesting to pick up stuff I wouldn't normally reach for, but on the other hand, some of the stuff I've been reading is very much Not For Me (picked up a few titles that ended up being very... well... stereotypically cishetero). Upside, I decided to read Winter's Orbit for the scifi romance portion of it, since I've been planning to read that anyway, so there is that.

+ So far that broad goal I've had to do less, or at least be mindful to not overschedule myself, ain't working out so hot. Whoops.

FAQ

What is the WIP Big Bang International Fanworks Day Mini Bang?
Good question! This is a Mini Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your fanfic drafts folder for the fics that were too short to be completed during the main Big Bang (ie, finished works are 7.5K words and under).

Do I need a Livejournal/Dreamwidth/AO3/etc. account to participate?
No! You don’t have to have an account on anything to participate, though you will need to have somewhere to post your finished work. Having one or more accounts will help for you to follow what is going on with the bang (we cross-post to Dreamwidth and Tumblr and heavily use our Discord server at the moment), but they are not required to participate. You can always leave comments anonymously or with an opensource ID.

How many fics can I write?
We absolutely don’t mind multiple fics! There are no sign-ups for this, as it’s an informal Mini Bang, so as long as it stays under he max word count, you can finish as many fics as you want between January 1st and February 15th.

Will I get emails about the bang?
We do not send out any emails for the Mini Bang, as we currently do not keep an updated email list of participants, so we only send individual emails as needed rather than mass emails.

However, email is the fastest way to communicate with the mods. If you have any questions or are having trouble communicating with your artist/author, please do email us! We will do our best to respond quickly.

What do you mean by maximum word count?
You don’t have to have a set minimum of your fic to start, so an outlined fic is fine, but it must be under 7,500 words when it’s finished.

More FAQ )

I have a question/concern that’s not mentioned here.
If you need help, you can always contact a mod, and we will do our best to make sure that you get your story/art finished. The best and fastest method of contact is through our email, wipbigbang@gmail.com.

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

Is it more or less difficult to be successful in the modern world than it was in the past (10, 50, 100, or 1,000 years ago)?

Video Games

Okay, I'm going to spend all day tomorrow playing video games if it kills me. My plans to set aside time for gaming over the holiday break never actually happened, and with everything going on in the world right now it will do me good to just get offline for a day and spend it wandering Faerûn or Thedas or the Andromeda galaxy.

I'm not sure yet which game I'll focus on, but it's definitely going to be Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, or Mass Effect: Andromeda because I have ongoing playthroughs in all of them that have been gathering dust for too long.

That meeting started too early and went way too long. That said it wasn't as awful as it could have been. We spent too much time on active shooter drills, not because it's not important but because we keep getting promised changes that never happen. This time I held up my work key chain that has over 30 keys. HOW am I going to find the right key fast enough to not get shot trying? I was told we can buy that bolt lock for the inside of the door if we want one...ME? Jesus.

There might be enough money to keep my building from falling in. That's good to know.

The new football coach seemed to be a cross between a tent revival preacher and someone honestly wanting to rehab our team (you know the one that's been here 1 year, lost half to expulsion for bad behavior and this is our third coach!)

The AI training went on too long. SO long. We're instructors. We KNOW the brain can't handle 2 hours of lecture.

Came home to no phone and no functioning cell phone (I have a land line because 90% of the time the cell doesn't work out here).

Then into the writer's zoom where I mostly did editing of the novel. Still hoping for beta readers for the Overlook short story.

And I'll do fannish fan recs tomorrow because then I had to fight with kickstarter about my pledge (still isn't done) and fight with United health care which still thinks I'm a member and well now I am again but it took forever to update everything.

Such a frustrating day.

Summary:

I had intended to write something for Rex/Fives/Echo. I got sideswiped by a set-up beginning at the Citadel. There is a character death mentioned, though it was going to prove not to have been one. However, the muses turned virulently against the entire concept. As always, feel free to run with it if you want.

Unfinished Citadel AU

"Promise me to get them out," she had said. "Something smells like a three day old rancor corpse."

What had his Commander seen? Rex nor his men had been able to recall anything that tripped their training, but General Kenobi had been caught unaware too.

Would he have pushed them to keep moving if General Skywalker hadn't been injured and unconscious from trying to save Ahsoka? It still felt wrong, no matter what the mission had been to not confirm the death. Echo still refused to talk about it, given he had nearly fallen with her.

"Should have been me, not the Jedi," Echo had said, once, on retrieval.

They all felt it. They were one of millions of clones and she had been who they were meant to protect.

Skywalker still wasn't talking to Kenobi. Rex didn't know how the Naboo Senator had headed off an outright mutiny. Fives thought she had promised to use her resources.

Rex still saw the flickers of destruction in his general's eyes, after, when he'd told the man.

"She commanded me to get you, all of us, out, minutes before we lost her and Tarkin."

If there was one fact of Rex's new life he hated, it was knowing that his general was barely holding onto sanity.

"What difference did the mission make? Dead brothers, both objectives dead, our Commander dead," Fives asked or maybe just rattled off to get it out of his head.

"Seppies didn't get the intel from either objective," Echo answered, weakly and by rote, as he'd been telling himself since they were retrieved.

Fives scowled. "Wish I knew what made her fall back."

Echo did too -- when he wasn't wondering why it had been her, not him, that fell.

"You need to worry about the General. Captain can't do it all, and he seems to like you."

Fives didn't answer that, because he was watching for Anakin Skywalker to lose his control, and hoping he was wrong.

Rex looked at Fives, then to Echo. "You both see it."

"Yes, we do," Echo answered for them.

"What do we do about it?" Fives asked.

"You stick to his six. He's taken to you well. Echo, I want you training with the slicers, give your brain a chance to do real intel."

"Seems odd, Captain, when we're talking about our General, sir," Echo told him.

Rex met his eyes. "Our unit keeps winding up in the deepest messes. That's half of why he's so volatile. You need to figure out the pattern, if there is one, so maybe we jump ahead of it."

"What's the other half?" Fives asked.

"If I knew, I might be the one who could actually head off the explosion," Rex admitted. "He came to us like that."

"Then maybe that's what I need to learn," Fives said softly.

"I think… I'm going to try and find what the Commander saw, that made her take Tarkin over the edge when she killed the Warden," Echo told them, and Rex nodded, thinking that was a good start.

1. It's the weekend! I am continuing to feel fairly optimistic about the upcoming February deadline at work, so hopefully that won't change. There's enough other stress going on outside of work.

2. Chloe doesn't really like any of the other cats but Molly, though her tolerance level for the others varies. She is the least tolerant of Jasper, though, so it was so nice to see her, Molly, and Jasper all on the bed together! And it happened two days in a row, too!

PROTESTS. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. LOTS OF THEM. SHOW UP.

Here’s a bunch on the Washington State wet side. All over the place, and I do mean all over. Like Tulalip, and Sequim. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sequim, but it is not a big place. Here’s the list. All kinds of times, all kinds of places.

Sundays are further down but this list isn’t in good date order, idk why. So keep scrolling.

I’m sure wherever you are has some too. Pick one and get out there.

Challenge Day #5: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

My wish list:

1. Recs for music with female vocallist, or music by female composers. I like a variety of music: metal, rock, Celtic, pop, bardcore, country, etc. Music in non-English languages are welcomed! A sampling of my favourite singers/bands: Loreena Mckennit, Dar Williams, Vienna Teng, Within Temptation, XG, etc.

2. Recs for interesting blogs to follow. Books, nature, history, cute animals, trivia, tabletop RPG, world building, art and craft, or anything you find interesting

3. Stolen from [personal profile] kingstoken : Go to arab.org and "click to help", it's free. All raised money goes to UN agencies.

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. Every time this comes around, I say I'd love to read a post-canon Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic set at least a couple decades after the show, long after the world's learned the truth about Slayers, vampires, demons, magic, and the endless battle between good and evil, where Buffy's famous enough that her arrival is heralded much as Miranda was in the "gird your loins" scene from The Devil Wears Prada, with Buffy having learned to command that level of respect and control. Few people write Buffy as an older woman, and even fewer try to reckon with a vastly changed world years or decades after the end of the show. It's possible this is already written and I just haven't seen it; if that's the case, I'm wishing someone would send it to me.

2. For ages, I've thought a vid of Peggy Olson from Mad Men to "All The Nasties" by Elton John would be an excellent character study. Beyond the on-the-nose of Don Draper to "sacred cows just fake it" and the turn of a show about advertising to a song about cultivating images and the struggle to be seen honestly, I can't ever get the image of the outro and the last "oh my soul" being Roger playing the piano while Peggy roller-skates across the empty SCDP offices, effortlessly leaving the frame as the song fades away.

3. If there's any Tom Cruise or Top Gun icons out there, please let me know. As was the custom, as I still enjoy doing, I'd love an appropriate fandom icon.

4. Related, fanart of the two live-action Interview with the Vampire Lestats where they're kissing while hovering and the actors' real-world height difference is both mitigated and made clear would curl my toes in the best way. If this is out there, please let me know; if not, please let me know about anyone's taking IWTV commissions and I'll see what funds I can budget.

5. As ever, as always, as usual, transformative works based on my fics. Fanart, banners, covers, podfics, moodboards - it's always a joy and it never gets old.
