Ugh, of course. And I can't do anything about it, either, owning a Canadian tv as I do :\ It isn't exactly surprising, but Dollhouse has been dodging cancellation from the beginning--hopefully the outpouring of support will change Fox's mind again?

Hey, I've got an American TV...but I'm not a Nielsen family, so it doesn't make any difference, either. I'm going to watch every episode (that airs) on hulu the next day, too. Hopefully that'll count for something.

It isn't surprising--I was definitely expecting not to get renewed at the end of the season, and I wasn't thinking we'd get the other nine episodes ordered either. But to start talking about this 2 episodes in? When they've massively failed at both the scheduling (have you seen the shows that are on right before it?) and the promotions...it's more frustrating than usually.

Ah, well. Your fabulous icon made me feel slightly better.

[identity profile] moonlightrick.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Hulu is prejudiced against Canadians, or I'd totally try that :\

I'd heard that ratings have been quite bad this season, lower even than last season, but...it *is* just two episodes in, so I'm not quite in panic mode yet...of course, I lost Kings just a little while ago, so I think I'm becoming resigned to the cancellation of my preferred shows. This is why I read and write more than I watch tv (besides the fact that I grew up without the latter :P)--either the story is complete, or I can finish it all in my head anyway. And maybe I'll just hide under a rock for a while, too.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
either the story is complete, or I can finish it all in my head anyway Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's definitely the most frustrating thing about TV shows.

I nearly never watched TV growing up; we had one, of course, and I watched a little bit, but it wasn't till college that I discovered that really good TV does the same thing for me that a novel does--gives me characters who change a grow and time to know them. That's why it's so disappointing that there's this massive downside to it all.

[identity profile] moonlightrick.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
We didn't have tv until I was...about sixteen, maybe? And I've never really gotten used to it. I have a tendency of watching a show and then suddenly deciding I'm finished here (eg. s1 Heroes). I like TV better than movies in a lot of ways, especially for the reasons you've mentioned, but I'm not always good with watching it as it's on. I'm good with DVD sets; we're good old pals, me and The Entire Collection! DVD's. Also, all my shows end up getting cancelled, so. It can really suck knowing everything that's going on behind the scenes of a show, especially re: cancellation/ratings :(

I'm good with DVD sets; we're good old pals, me and The Entire Collection! DVD's. Oh, absolutely. Most of the shows I'm really into, I watched most if not all of them in season- or series-sized chunks. I greatly prefer that as well, and I so hear you on the getting canceled thing.

...

Epic. FAIL.

I guess now is the time to start wearing that dorky "Save Dollhouse, save the Jossverse." T-shirt

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it is. I wonder where I can get one?

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
In the realms of the Sueverse.

*giggles*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, the Sueverse. The happiest place on earth! Where Joss shows are never canceled, and everyone is happy always!

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Where That 70s Show didn't have that crap season and Gilmore Girls ended as soon as Jess left and where there was that infamous Buffy/GG crossover. *swoons* Yes the Sueverse is like Disneyland minus the long lines.

*nods*

(I'm actually contemplating makign that t-shirt jsut to hang on my wall. I'd be too bashful to wear it in public)

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
UGH NONONONONONONONO!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just did a post with beaucoup de links on what people can do to help Dollhouse. Sigh.

I'm currently streaming it on two tabs, both Hulu and Fox.com.

It felt like the network gave up on it before it even aired though. They haven't tried worth a damn to advertise it and they gave it the shittiest possible lead-ins with those lame comedies. Douches.

Your post is fabulous. Very helpful.

Oh shit. I really can't do anything, living in Australia. Except carry around 'save dollhouse' icons, and possibly watch on Hulu?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel that there's much I can do living here--I'm not a Nielsen family, so what I watch doesn't count--expect watching them on hulu whenever possible. GRRR!

Oh, that icon is fab. *scurries off to get one*

[ETA] Where did you get that one, anyways? I want to see if there's more!

Oh, hell no. It just hit it's stride!!!! It's getting more buzz than ever (but no ratings, apparently)! Topher is gonna try the remote wipe next week!

ARRRRRRGHHHHH!

Why doesn't anyone want T.V. that makes them think?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know! If it hadn't gotten renewed at the end of last season, I would have been disappointed but okay. But now we've had "Epitaph One"! We've had Amy Acker being awesome! We have all these amazing guest stars! We have the promise of lots of Victor/Sierra to come! We have the Rossum stuff getting more conspiracy-y!

Why doesn't anyone want T.V. that makes them think? I actually think that the show already lost most of the thinking audience. Last season, all of the feminist bloggers/TV watchers that I really respect stopped watching the show because the nature of it combined with the way it was advertised turned them off to it. I wrote about it here. I think we need to work on getting those people on board again, on saying, "Yeah, the show is creepy beyond all reason, but that's the point.

But yeah, you're absolutely right: the vast majority of TV audiences out there just want to turn their brains off when they watch TV. And I can't entirely blame them, because some of the people I know who have jobs in which they have to thinkthinkthink all day long and deal with ugly truths about life just want to come home and either watch mindless entertainment or watch an episode that's solved in an hour (procedurals). Which is okay.

I just wish there were more people who like to think about their TV.

Ha! Sorry--I just realized how long and rambly this is! You'll have to forgive me!

I actually think that the show already lost most of the thinking audience.

Well, actually, they almost lost me too, and I am part of Joss' built in audience. I knew that it was all a set up, but watching people be abused over and over each week while he built the mythos and set up his story arch was still a very painful and anger-provoking thing. I would have bailed, too, had I not been willing to believe that it was the payoff was going to be mindblowing. It's the antithesis of modern television, really.

I TiVo the show, so I blew right past those ads -- it probably would have set me over the edge, and left me without the really cool stuff that came later.

And yes, absolutely, there's a place for escapism and tidy little storylines - a big place, with the stress of today's world, but does that have to be all that there is? Can we aspire to more, too?

I know you agree, just moaning a bit more.

See - long and rambly is just fine by me! I welcome the company! :D

That's exactly where I was at.

Lucky with the TiVoing! As soon as I get a real job with a regular paycheck, I need to start saving for one of those...

Yay!

Balls!

I'd just learned about the Summer Glau guest spot too. D:

And now thinking about Summer makes me think about what they did to TSCC and, ugh, just WTF FOX.

FOX makes me go GRRRR.
