Well, actually, they almost lost me too, and I am part of Joss' built in audience. I knew that it was all a set up, but watching people be abused over and over each week while he built the mythos and set up his story arch was still a very painful and anger-provoking thing. I would have bailed, too, had I not been willing to believe that it was the payoff was going to be mindblowing. It's the antithesis of modern television, really. Exactly.
