There's going to be a 50 Shades of Suck movie????? How can this be anything but straight-up porn with lots of messed-up character dynamics to pad around the edges? WHAT KIND OF RATING WILL IT GET???? I am trying to imagine what the end result is going to look like...and my imagination fails me. Thankfully.

Well, to play devil's advocate, they did manage to film American Psycho and Secretary without turning them into hardcore porn. So that much I think they'll manage. As for making it an actual good movie, though...

Oh, absolutely. Maybe with a good scriptwriter (I haven't read 50SOG) they could invent more of a story for this one as well, but given the current fad that all movie adaptations must be 100% faithful to the book, it looks pretty trainwreckbound.

I have only seen one NC-17 movie in theaters. It was a foreign film, clearly, because U.S. studios would rather release as R and put out the unrated version on DVD. :)

I just meant that, clearly, you can have BDSM sexytimes scenes and have it rated R. But I don't think James Spader ever pulls out Maggie Gyllenhaal's tampon, either. I am not sure the American mainstream viewing audience is ready for explicit period sex on the big screen. I mean, according to This Film Is Not Yet Rated, you can't even have a woman mime masturbating while completely clothed and still get an R rating.

OTOH, with a good screenwriter, the characters could be more fleshed out and the ridiculousness could be reduced? Maaaaybe?

I do not understand this book at all. Everyone in the media is talking about it like it's revolutionary or something, like there's never been erotica before? (Apparently the author is going to be on The View tomorrow.) What is so different about this one? Plus, it's awful. The writing is horrible, and the porn isn't even hot.

I saw everyone on my flist bitching about it, and since I trust their tastes, I never bothered to think about it ever again. There is no small part of me that is furious that Secretary is even being brought into the conversation - obviously the people bringing it up here aren't saying the two should be equated, but I am sure the movie will continue to get referenced and NO. My beautiful, nuanced little movie that deals with its themes and characters with dignity and sex positivity and maturity and love! MY FAVOURITE MOVIE. And now it will be advertised as "other things you might like" when people look up Fifty Shades of Suck on Amazon etc.
