Oh, haaaaaaiiiiii. It’s one of those posts where I talk about how much I fail at eljay. Which is a lot. So let’s skip that part and get right to me asking how y’all are. Everything okay? Anything awesome/important that I’ve missed? What is going on with you?

Here’s what is going on with me.

Top TenFifteen Things That Are Awesome at the Moment
1. Ramin Karimloo’s existence. Yes, this really does need to be number one.
2. My family continues to be amazing. I feel like I should not be this big of a fan of my own family, but I am. Whatever. We’re awesome.
3. Working on my book! Going to the library, not hooking up to the internet, actually working. And I have decided that I will KEEP ON WRITING even when (inevitably) I hit the point when I realize that the book is stupid and worthless and no one would ever, ever want to read it. I mean, this is just the beginning, and who knows how long I can keep this up, but hopefully I’ll develop some will power? Hopefully?
4. SPRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING. THERE ARE FLOWERS. IT IS WARM. I AM SO HAPPY. It’s kind of sad how much influence the weather has on my mood. I was sitting in the library on the second floor looking out the big windows and the grass was so green I thought I was going to cry.
5. Grace/Rich OTP and their flawless, flawless scenes
6. Rereading A Song of Ice and Fire. I had forgotten how easy it is to fly through these books. SUPER READABLE.
7. DOCTOR WHO SOON SOON SOON
8. Parks and Rec continues to be flawless and the happiest show on television with beautiful OTP times and Ron Swanson being excellent and Amy Poehler being my hero and lots more people starting to watch it. If you aren’t watching this show, I have nothing to say to you. I feel towards you the way the entirety of Pawnee feels about people who don’t appreciate Lil Sebastian (speaking of which, I want a t-shirt. I don’t even wear t-shirts, but I would wear that one).
9. Freya Mavor’s face. How is she possible? I don’t understand. I still think that if they insist on casting a blonde girl for the new Buffy reboot (instead of going with my race!swap idea), they should cast her, regardless of the fact that she is British. I think she’s the only person at this point that I would forgive for not being SMG.
10. Persephone Magazine changing their layout so that I can ACTUALLY READ IT. This website is what Jezebel wishes it were. Except better.
11. Watching The X-Files for the first time and the mytharc actually showing up. I love worldbuilding!
12. I’m going to In the Heights this weekend! Yay! I don’t know any of the music, but I’m super excited, because I hear excellent things.
13. Riding in my truck with the windows down and singing Marina and the Diamonds songs on the top of my lungs
14. My family made beignets on Sunday. NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
15. The Being Human finale. This would be higher up the list except that it was a couple of weeks ago now. But still. Well played, Toby Whithouse. Well played.

Top TenNine Things That Suck at the Moment
1. The world is actually a mess. I can’t even address it—I get too overwhelmed. But I keep hearing Yeats in my head: “For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.”
2. Steve Moffat’s ridiculous sexism coming through in an actual episode. HAHAHA ELEVEN TELLING AMY TO PUT ON TROUSERS. Except that’s not funny at all, Moff. Don’t do this to me. Seriously—don’t.
3. My boss is ridiculous *eyeroll*
4. Allergies impending. I feel them coming on. The one downside of spring arriving.
5. I actually do fail at lj. I just get overwhelmed by thinking about catching up with my flist, and it’s easier to avoid. I apologize for being a very bad friend.
6. No idea what I’ll be writing for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy. Haven’t been in a BtVS frame of mind for a while.
7. Community continues to fail at race so hard that it ruins episodes that HAVE MY FUTURE HUSBAND AS A GUEST STAR. Seriously, Dan Harmon. We need to have a word.
8. Gas is ridiculously expensive. *sigh*
9. I am not married to Ramin Karimloo.

Also, I need to tell you a story about how awesome my mama is. My little sister just got back from a medical mission trip to Honduras. Of course she has so many heartbreaking stories to tell (if you’ve never been in an orphanage in a third world country, I really don’t think you can imagine what it’s like). One was about going up into the jungle and finding these two little boys—four and five years old—wandering around. They gave them a ride and took them back to their house to give them some food. And there was their little brother, only three, at home alone. Their parents both died earlier in the year, and while they have a woman taking care of them, she goes to work all day every day, leaving these three little boys alone. They also don’t have much food—they’ve literally been living on mangos—and barely any clothes (the baby didn’t have any pants, and one of the older boys didn’t have a shirt) and only one very thin blanket for all four people even though it gets very cold up in the mountains at night. My sister held the three-year-old and she said he cried the entire time she was holding him. Not in a “put me down” kind of way, but just because he was overwhelmed—she said she didn’t think anyone had held him since his parents died. And he sobbed when she put him down to leave.

They left them some food, but it was just a few of them, all college students, out in the middle of the jungle so they weren’t sure what else they could do. There are so many people in such need there that it isn’t possible to take care of everyone. My sister came home and told us this story, and it broke my mama’s heart so much that yesterday she called the mission my sister went down with and asked them to go find the kids and told them that we would pay to sponsor them. So the mission’s going to go look for them and if they find them, my tithe is going to start going to taking care of these little boys.

Your mother is a brilliant, brilliant woman. I love her forever for deciding to do that.

Thank you for this post! It brightened my day, weirdly, although you don't sound particularly bright-dayed as far as I can tell.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. I love her so much already, and then she does stuff like that. ♥

Oh, I'm so glad I could brighten your day! Mine is pretty average, actually. And look--there's double the amount of things on the awesome list as on the sucky list!

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
NEVER LEAVE MEEEEEEEEE

Also, I am not watching Parks&Rec. Clearly this is a life choice I need to edit.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'LL NEVER LET YOU GOOOOOOOO.

You really do need to watch it! It is the definition of happiness and delight!

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
NOT EVEN IN A UNIVERSE WHERE WE ARE SAD ORGAN DONOR CLONES. (ESPECIALLY NOT IN THAT ONE OH GOD)

I still have no experience with Community, either! I know it's gone downhill lately, but Troy and Britta have both ended up v. intriguing personages to me through fandom osmosis. Thoughts?

[identity profile] brunettepet.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, your mom! That story brought tears to my eyes. What a lovely thing to do.

Spring! My allergies are horrible during the fall (cedar and oak pollen), so I just get to enjoy flowers and ragweed and sunshine, Oh my! Unfortunately the mister suffers through spring.

You are making me want to see Skins! Grace and Rich are so cute.

Doctor Who!

89° today! I am putting laundry on the line!

Congratulations on the writing front. It's wonderful when things are flowing.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I cried when my sister was telling me the initial story and then when my mama asked me if I'd want to help support the kids.

Well, enjoy the spring! Mine are definitely worst this time of year, but fall's no picnic either. I never had them till I hit about 21, and now I get them really bad. *sigh*

Grace and Rich are adorable. Best thing about this generation!

Oh, line-dryed laundry! Won't that smell lovely?

Thank you! I'm feeling pretty good about it!

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. That's wonderful and heartbreaking about your mom's action. I hate it when I cry at my desk at work. Dangit.

Yay for working on your book! That's wonderful!

Parks and Rec: Love. I would bet dollars to donuts that they sell the Little Sebastian shirt online on NBC.com or somewhere. Or it will be there very soon. I was thinking about getting one for the bf. Because how cute did Ben look in his Little Sebastian shirt?

Persephone Magazine: I would read this if I had the energy. i kinda sorta know all these folks who write for it, and I know I should read it... but I'm just exhausted. I think the downfall of Jezebel has emotionally exhausted that part of my brain. And can we just talk for a second about how hard Jez has sucked lately? Forget about the new layout--I don't even care about that. I just mean the god-awful content. A dress code for depression? Are you fucking kidding me? I just can't anymore.

Community: WTF? What happened there? I don't know that there's ever in the history of the world been a more poorly timed episode? Jokes about genocide aside--seriously, there was a joke about a nuclear wasteland in the first 40 seconds of the show. Why wouldn't you edit that out? Jeebus. Just give some advertiser an extra 10 seconds of time. That was the worst Community ever. I'm sad that it was a Britta episode.

BUT! In happier Community news: Look! http://www.iamdonald.com/post/3955886010/wu-tangs-crowd-ive-never-been-to-sxsw I've been to both of the places shown in these pictures! The top is Austin Music Hall and the bottom is Magnolia Cafe. So Donglover and I have breathed the same air. AND! even better! The Troy/Abed bromance is reeeeeaaalll! Oh, joy!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I should know better than to tell stories that will make you cry at work!

:D

If they do sell the t-shirt (and I bet you're right), I will probably end up wasting money on it.

I understand. If you ever have the energy for it, it's really great, but you shouldn't feel obligated. Especially after Jezebel. And I totally, totally agree about it just crashing and burning. I think it's been happening since Anna left, but it's definitely gotten worse lately.

I KNOW. I KNOW. And then Dan Harmon said something ridiculous and snarky on twitter that made me hate him a lot.

AWWWW! I love that kid so muuuuch!

[identity profile] blackfrancine.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I think the content changed almost immediately after Anna left. Which is so sad. Because I think she created something really unique and powerful in that community, and it sucks that it couldn't be (or wasn't) sustained.

Ooh. What did Dan Harmon say? Apparently he's a real tool on Twitter from what I've read elsewhere.

I know! I think he's coming back in May to do stand up! And I might get to go see him then. I'm all atwitter about it!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It amazes me how much one person can influence the whole tone of a sight like that. I remember when I first found the site, it meant a lot to me. I was newly identifying as a feminist, and that was the site that first allowed me to find an online feminist community. To see it fall so hard is just sad.

I can't remember off-hand--when I get home and can search tumblr I'll find a link for you--but it was something like, "Now that you have all campaigned so hard on the internet, I will never make a genocide joke again!" or something like that. But it was clearly mocking those who actually care.

That would be glorious! I hope you get to go!

[identity profile] shamoogity.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like you're going to be wasting some money.

Your mom sounds awesome.

Also, I have been watching Coupling and while quite funny its entire premise could basically be summed up as "sexism." You can definitely see the Moffatt come through in the writing. In the good ways too though eg. the plot structures are fantastic.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG IT EXISTS!

MUST. OWN.

She is really, really awesome.

I watched the first episode because I'm a really big fan of Press Gang, his first show. And it didn't really do anything for me. Since then, I've found out more about him and am glad I never got into Coupling, because, as you say: sexism.

In the good ways too though eg. the plot structures are fantastic.

I seriously think he's the greatest plotter alive.

[identity profile] amyww.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, first time commenter here.

Yay for you and your mom and your sister. That is a wonderful thing. I spent my imaginary lottery winnings this morning setting up a foundation. Just give me a chance, universe!

And boo for Steven Moffat. I spent some time reading about him. It explains so much now. Esp this: (Why it's so so hard to be a rich white man in the western world.)

"Well, the world is vastly counted in favour of men at every level - except if you live in a civilised country and you’re sort of educated and middle-class, because then you’re almost certainly junior in your relationship and in a state of permanent, crippled apology. Your preferences are routinely mocked. There’s a huge, unfortunate lack of respect for anything male."

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi! *waves*

A foundation sounds lovely! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your lottery number to come up!

UUUUUUGH. I've read that one before. I usually try to stay away from any of his interviews because he makes me so angry, for exactly such quotes as that. UUUUUUGH. Usually he's pretty good at keeping that sort of thing out of the actual episodes, but the Red Nose Day episode was ridiculous.

YAY LAUREN'S BOOK!!!!

I was actually about to email you and bug you about it, as requested. Apparently I don't need to (yet).

Did your mom little sister go to the same place in Honduras you were telling me about before?

I'm having trouble with SS, too. I've got these first 2600 words that are fine, but then there's a bit of a shift in the story and I'm stuck on the transition.

Things I have been doing: watching much Supernatural, dipping my toe into reading SPN fic (so shiny!), ranting about worldbuilding in BtVS, enjoying my luxurious spring break before starting third quarter next week. And this weekend, the roommate and I are going on a (short) road trip down to the coast and walking on beaches and exploring little touristy shops and eating yummy seafood dinner.

It's lovely to hear from you. :)

ETA: Also! I have a feminism mood icon now! *points* I mean, only to people who know Restless really, really well is it a feminism icon, but it's one in my heart. *g*

Tentative yay? I hope it's just actually good. I've hit the "THIS IS GOING TO BE SO BAAAAAD" point. But I'm going to keep working.

I appreciate the thought!

No, this time she went somewhere new, and I can't remember the name offhand. Here is the group they were with.

There is a lot of really good SPN fic...and a lot of really bad stuff, too. I have a few writers I'll rec to you when I get a chance. I was never super into the fic, but there was some good family-oriented stuff I found.

I read your worldbuilding post and loved it madly and agreed with you totally. No surprise there.

Oh, it's spring break for you! Good! I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I hope this next quarter is better.

And this weekend, the roommate and I are going on a (short) road trip down to the coast and walking on beaches and exploring little touristy shops and eating yummy seafood dinner.

That sounds amazing.

I love the icon! *approves*

You know what, if it's bad? That's okay. Really it is. I highly doubt that it will be all bad, and anyway I'm a firm believer that working on writing will make you better, period, regardless of what kind of writing it is and what the immediate result is.

But hey, maybe it'll be good!

Hee. I thought perhaps you might agree with the worldbuilding rant. *g*

There is a lot of really good SPN fic...and a lot of really bad stuff, too. I have a few writers I'll rec to you when I get a chance.

Ooh, thank you! Whenever you feel like it. Right now I'm working through a genfic reccing community, which has links to lots of good stuff.

OMG, so glad I'm not the only one with a crazily influenced mood by the weather. I spent most of my free time outside today, feeling like Sarah on this userpic, just less pretty :))

Good luck with your book! Writing is coming easy for me as well these days, I think credit's due to the weather here too!

And capital 'R' RESPECT to your mom. This story almost made me cry.

feeling like Sarah on this userpic, just less pretty :))

We're all less pretty than Sarah, aren't we? Gorgeous girl. That icon definitely captures my happy weather mood!

Thank you! I'm with you on the weather making writing easier, too!

She's a wonderful person! :D

HELLO!

Working on my book!
Yay! That is wonderful!

Rereading A Song of Ice and Fire. I had forgotten how easy it is to fly through these books. SUPER READABLE.
I am starting to think I should read this series.

Parks and Rec continues to be flawless and the happiest show on television
I am starting to think I should watch this.

No idea what I’ll be writing for seasonal_spuffy.
BLARGH, I know what I want to write but the actual writing is like pulling teeth. I'm starting to think I won't finish it in time, which would make sad even with the freebie day. Good luck!

Your mama is awesome. That is a heartbreaking story, and I hope the mission is able to find them. Keep us updated, pretty please?

Anything awesome/important that I’ve missed? What is going on with you?
Hmm, not much happening in real life, but I wrote my first piece of BtVS meta, which is not something I had anticipated doing but am quite pleased with.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
HI THERE!

Thanks! I'm pretty excited to actually be getting words down on the page, even if I'm trying not to let myself get too satisfied as I've only just started and who knows how long I can keep it up. *sigh*

It's the happiest show! And the characters are all quirky, but the show has such affection for them, and it's the opposite of cynical. I adore everyone. I definitely recommend it.

Thanks! And good luck to you, too. I'm sure we'll both manage to whip out something.

Keep us updated, pretty please?

I definitely will.

Oooh! Meta! I can't wait to check it out! That's exciting!

[identity profile] petzipellepingo.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It made me love her even more!

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Your mama is awesome. I was reading the first part of your story thinking some organization should sponsor these poor children your sister met, and lo and behold, there's your mama taking the initiative.

Ten Reasons Why I Love You And Miss Chatting With You
1. I'm sure Enver's role on Community isn't helping him in this avalanche of love for Karimloo that is edging him out of your affections. I was seriously "WTF"? ing my screen during that episode, thinking that kissing a war criminal is NOT FUNNY. Genocide is NOT FUNNY. I am currently side-eyeing Dan Harmon like whoa, because up until now I was really digging season 2. Now I'm like the Pulp Fiction episode had better be damn funny and not at all offensive, or my marriage to Community will be on the rocks for sure.
2. Parks and Rec bandwagon. I need to get on it.
3. I was in Borders today looking at "How to write your novel in a year" books. For you. No, really, the whole time I was thinking "I wonder if Lauren could use this?" and "Would this help Lauren?"
4. ASOIAF - so good. Like old yoplait commercial good.
5. Skins bandwagon. I need to get on it.
6. Oh, X-Files. Have you started shipping Mulder and Scully yet?
7. My marriage to Doctor Who is already on the rocks. Thanks, Moff. Way to go for the crude joke for Red Nose Day, for which I was really excited. It's like giving our relationship a power drill for an anniversary present.
8. I miss you terribly when you're not around LJ, and I feel so bad it's overwhelming to you instead of calming.
9. Here's a pretty SMG icon I made for you to get you into a BtVS frame of mind for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy:
Photobucket
10. Gas is expensive. And I really just needed to round out this top ten list. We have more important things to talk about than the price of gas, don't we? Like awesome Enjolras actors.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
She is so awesome! Whenever people talk about all conservatives being greedy/heartless/not caring about people/whatever, I always think of her, because she's so definitely not any of those things, though politically we're on different pages now.

Anyways! I thought you would get what I mean.

1. Ha! Enver is still number one in my affections, or at least he will continue to be if he A) doesn't end up making genocide jokes again and B) IS ACTUALLY IN SOMETHING. The show needs to stay away from commentary on race and other serious things because it FAILS SO HARD every time it goes there.
2. YOU DOOOOOOOO.
3. Aw! That makes me feel special!
4. Very enjoyable. I'm not as over-the-top obsessed as a lot of people are because I think his prose isn't the best (it's not bad, it's just not beautiful or interesting or Gaiman-esque) and also because I think he actually is trying to juggle too many characters. But! Still totally enjoyable.
5. YOU DOOOOO.
6. Of course! I adore those two.
7. Seriously. I'm hoping no more of it will pop up in the upcoming season, because I'm so incredibly excited.
8. I miss you, too! I need to at least pop in on other people's journals if I can't deal with my own. *sigh*
9. OMG SO PRETTY! I LOVE IT.
10. So true. I mean, I understand why gas is expensive, and I'm totally supportive of all the uprisings in the Middle East, so I'm not really complaining, but still. ENJOLRAS. FAVORITE.
ext_407741: (swagger like us)

Your mom and your sister are so wonderful. I pray that the mission gets those kids some help.

Ramiiiiiiin. Can he just play Enjolras forever? Because Enjolras >>>>>>>>>>>>>The Phantom of the Opera.

GRACE AND RICH. Even the way they make out in the background is flawless. Even the way they fall asleep on sofas is flawless. S6, Y U NO COME SOONER.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They are truly, truly wonderful. Thanks for the prayers--we're all praying too.

SO TRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUE. I am not a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan.

YES YES YES. I am so obsessed with those two I don't even know what to do with myself. Do I watch their scenes over and over? YOU BET I DO.

[identity profile] ladyofthelog.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Your mama is AMAZING.

Also, I don't know if it'll put you in the BtVS mood, but I just posted some s7 gen. *bats eyelashes*

Oh, good! I'll have to check it out sometime soon!

[identity profile] zombie_boogie.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Game of Thrones! Parks and Rec! THE X-FILES. Oh my god so many people are just starting this magnificent show and it is an excellent life choice. I am totally, totally jealous of your spring weather though. We just got another heap of snow yesterday after the weather teased us with almost springtime temperature. Blast and damn.

I hope the Comic Relief sketch was a one-off thing, because Moff is usually better about keeping his sexism out of the actual program :/.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-03-24 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There are lots of excellent fandoms in the air! And I kind of love knowing that other people are experiencing tF for the first time as I am.

Ugh. Snow. Not a fan. We don't get much of it here at all, and that is a good thing or else I would probably go stark raving mad. I wish you warmer weather soon, though!

I hope the Comic Relief sketch was a one-off thing, because Moff is usually better about keeping his sexism out of the actual program :/.

My thoughts exactly.
