I assume for Hurt Locker? I've been really wanting to see that one--just the idea of a woman directing a hard-hitting action film makes me ridiculously happy, but it's also supposed to be excellent.
Which is especially frustrating seeing as The Blind Side got a best picture nom. Not that I have seen either of these movies, but still. Although I'm happy about District 9, Up, and The Hurt Locker.
I haven't seen The Blind Side, either (though I've heard it's better than you would think), but there is no way on God's green earth that it is a better-made, acted, directed, written, designed, etc. movie than Bright Star, which is a glorious work of art, from start to finish. You should check it out, if you get the chance.
Up! is made of sunshine and rainbows, and I can't wait to check out Hurt Locker.
Yeah, Bright Star is at the top of my list of movies to watch, with Hurt Locker a close second. I think I am mostly prejudiced against The Blind Side because of the trailers, but I too heard that it was better than it looked. And I always enjoy Sandy Bullock.
Yes, everyone's told me the trailers are nothing like the movie, but they were AWFUL. And I'm quite fond of her, too, and still have a great fondness for While You Were Sleeping, even though I generally hate romcoms.
It wasn't the best movie ever, but it was one I could love whole-heartedly, which doesn't happen often.
And Abbie Cornish was indeed incredibly, and the cinematography was amazing. It should have at least gotten nominations for those.
I do think if they're gonna nominate The Blind Side (which doesn't have a shot in hell of winning), they should at least nominate Bright Star. Seriously.
Is that Marshall? It so did not look like him! I thought, "Who would be slapping Barney?" And of course he was the first one to pop into my head, but I didn't think it was him!
Yay! I am now proud of my card!
Also, I think I need a Ted icon. I am loving him more all the time.
hahah yeah. it's a fast gif, i could see how it would be confusing.
ted's my favorite character. hands down. did you watch this week's episode? not ted centric at all or anything, but while we're on the subject of himym.
I haven't seen it yet! Tonight I'll watch it, for sure.
I didn't like Ted at first. I found him boring. But then I realized the things that annoyed me about him...are the things I have in common with him. So I said, "Get over your self-loathing!" And now I like him!
I also like the gender stereotype inverting with his character: this guy who's so obsessed with the idea of true love, etc. It's refreshing!
SO FUNNY. i don't think i've laughed so much at a himym episode is a WHILE.
himym is actually really refreshingly feminist, and it does it in these very quiet and ridiculous ways that are compounded by the fact that barney has sex with drunk girls and shouldn't but is always represented as ridiculous and is played by a gay man. i don't think they could get away with it if nph weren't playing him. but the women are fierce, they love sex, and the men inhibit far more romantic and "female" qualities than the women do. and in the end it's awesome. i love pop culture studies. brb, getting masters degree, writing about tv for a living, brb.
OH GOOD! It's been a little...questionable lately. I am glad to hear it's back in good form!
YES! I completely agree! I do think they should let Lilly nad Robin have more episodes. That would help. But the roles? Totally inverted, and it's EPIC.
I adore pop culture studies, too. I would absolutely lovelovelove to do the same thing, but A) I'm not sure I'm going to do the masters thing even though EVERYONE EVER tells me I should, B) if I did, I probably wouldn't be able to get into a pop culture-y type program because I had the opportunity to write exactly one paper about that type of thing in undergrad (Spike! And gender! And Foucauldian power binaries!), and C) I'd probably end up doing Southern studies and writing about Faulkner and Welty and O'Connor and feminism and gender heirarchies, which would be awesomely fun...but not as cool as writing about TV.
But then, my crazy, never-gonna-happen dream is to write for TV, a really good drama, and then create/executive produce my own shows. I think I'm gonna stick with the slightly more reasonable dream of being a novelist.
SO FUNNY. i mean, as characters i like lily and robin the least but i also recognize that since that is me and not the way most fandom is, that they are both written well and i appreciate that given the status of women in tv these days. i miss bsg.
DUDE, WHATEVER, JUST GET YOUR MASTERS. i'm getting like two ph.ds, lady; we'll have a party. it'll be GREAT.
if you ever make it to hollywood and do screenwriting, i am more than willing to join anyone's staff writing team. my mother is always pushing me in this direction. my parents are so weird - they don't think i should be a college professor, oh no. they want me to be a writer because they think that somehow is a more viable career choice. one time my father said, "don't go to law school, they don't make money anymore. i think you should be a poet."
Yeah, I like them the least, too, but I want MORE WOMEN WITH AGENCY. Which they do tend to have; I just think that sometimes it should be less of a boys' show.
We all miss BSG. *sniff*
A MASTERS PARTY.
I would definitely let you join my staff. angearia is already on it, and I think you and madcap_shiny and ineffort and ava_leigh_fitz and likeserendipity (where has she been lately?) should all be on it and we would create the most awesome show in the history of the world.
I think I adore your parents. That is the greatest quote I have ever read. Ever.
we do all miss bsg. it's pathetic, actually. i still don't know why they ended it so soon; i feel like if it had a fifth season or so they would have made it suck less. but maybe it was just delaying the inevitable fail. :(
YES A PARTY. we'll share notes. tbqh a dissertation on women in pop culture sounds like an excellent life plan to me! "what do you do for a living?" "i watch tv."
personally, i have always felt that fandom should just build a tv show. we're smart ladies, we understand television rather than just watching it, some of us are feminists, many of us are writers. we should just do it. and go.
haha my parents certainly have their failures (there are more tags. oh dear), but they certainly have their moments of A++++

It's so lovely. It's not the greatest movie ever, but it is the definition of lovely. It's about the relationship between John Keats and Fanny Brawne (so: poetry and angst, pretty much), and it's so visually stunning, with great acting. It's definitely worth checking out. I bought it. I rarely buy movies (I'm more of a TV-buyer). Speaking of which...it should arrive any day now....
I SHIT YOU NOT I JUST SAW THIS TWO HOURS AGO FINALLY FINALLY.
The Oscars blow, but um, can we talk about how Ben Whishaw and Abbie broke my heart and mended it every other second during this film? Because god. So beautifully done.
OH I KNOW! The pretty and the emotion and just all-around loveliness! I'm so glad you watched it! POETRY AND PRETTY LANDSCAPES AND AAAAANGST. It's like it was designed for me!

Don't forget that she directed the classic vampire tale Near Dark .

ALSO FOR THE RECORD IF AVATAR WINS BEST PICTURE I'LL CUT SO MANY BITCHES THEY'LL REVOKE MY FEMINISM CARD AND MY PACIFIST CARD.

The cinematography blew my mind. Because it wasn't super sharp and shiny like you might expect. It was subtle but amazing.
CO-SIGNED. I AM WITH YOU AND THE GUY HITTING BARNEY ON THAT ONE.
Well, I don't have a pacifist card, because I can't quite get there. But I do have a "profound dedication to non-violence" card. Will that suffice?

hahah that would be marshall. A+ to him. also i would put the profound dedication to nonviolence card at equal status with the pacifist card.
