I just got home from work and this is the first post on my flist! So, did Kripke say something especially stupid, or did you just get caught up on Ellen and Jo's fates?

I was sitting there sobbing my eyes out, thinking, "He still doesn't get it." Every. Woman. Evil or dead. Every. One.

And then I was bitter that I let him emotionally manipulate me into crying. I comforted myself by reminding myself that Ben Edlund, whom I still love in spite of everything, wrote this episode. It was a small comfort.

I admit, I just deleted the season pass off my DVR after that episode because I'm getting zero enjoyment out of a show that thinks women are completely disposable. Bobby gets to live forever but Ellen and Jo both have to die? Whatever. Clearly, the only good woman is a dead woman in that universe.

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the ep, but I just looked up spoilers out of curiosity and AW HELL NO.

Seriously, I get that this show is about the brothers and there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but is it too much to ask for a recurring female character who a) is good and b) does not die?

I mean, I know that fandom is often filled with shrieking fanbrats who think girls are totally gross and will ruin the Winchesters/the show with their vaginas, but I like to expect better from canon.

Hey, what show/person is this? *so confused*

Supernatural. (Or I'm pretty sure it is, anyway...)

A show which is apparently quite fun, but tends to have quite problematic issues with women - most of them end up evil or dead.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I do not blame you at all. I'm very, very tempted to stop downloading the episodes for the same reason.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
He killed off the last two recurring female characters on the show. The only one we have left is--guess what--a demon. An evil, evil demon.

Also, both of the characters were totally badass. I'm pretty infuriated.

Yup, Supernatural.

And that's the long and short of it, yes.

VERONICA! Now there was a show that loved strong women. *misses Veronica and Mac*

^gasps*

How DARE you?!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that sounds bad. That would drive me pretty crazed since I'm all about strong women on shows.

...once again fridging them to give the Winchesters more angst?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'd given it up. I didn't watch the last half of S4 until...three months ago? Maybe. And I've just sort of been downloading and then watching when I have spare moments. And I've liked some of the new mythology--and Dean continues to be wonderfully, wonderfully self-loathing, which I love.

But I loved Alona Tal so hard in that scene. She had me sobbing like a baby. WHICH WAS MORE THAN KRIPKE DESERVED. But I told myself that I was crying for Alona, not him, and felt slightly better.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
AMEN. AAAAAAY-MEN.

I'm so infuriated right now. And at the same time, I'm not at all surprised.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
How dare you not?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be furious.

And the thing is, I love the familial bond on the show, and it's developing a pretty nice little mythology. Plus, it used to be absolutely fabulous at integrating American folklore and urban legends into the show. Plus, Ben Edlund, who's one of my fav TV writers EVER writes epic episodes. But the misogyny (and the race fail, to be honest) just kills me. This might be the final straw for me. Both of these totally awesome female characters--the very last ones!--dead.

Just found this discussion about the most recent episode:

"They've killed every recurring female character in the show. Ruby, a lead character for two seasons, was killed in a gross way -- sandwiched between two men and stabbed in the lower stomach -- and despite being a love interest for Sam is now a recurring punchline. Jo and Ellen were brought back to be disposed of. Pam was disposed of. Anna was left to an uncertain fate, and, honestly, if we see her again? Odds are she'll be disposed of. Bela was disposed of. Ava was recurring and disposed of. Jess died in the first episode but, don't worry, they're still milking her death for drama."

*grits teeth and tries not to punch things*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. They sacrificed themselves to give the boys a chance to kill Lucifer and stop the apocalypse from happening.

AND THE BOYS FAILED.

Which makes it even worse, because it means Jo and Ellen died for absolutely nothing. I mightmightmight be able to cut them some slack if they'd died in some triumphant, useful way. Maybe. But no. That doesn't happen on SPN.

I might be breaking up with this show for good.

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
How dare you not explain to me what thou speaks of?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
YES. That's the best summary I've seen.

And I'm loving your icon in this context.

I might have to pull an Emmie and write crackfic to work through my emotions. The Summers sisters let the Winchester brothers have it. BOOM!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know so many people who are fans and I've been meaning to watch it from the beginning, but that'd be pretty hard for me to swallow (even though it is in a later season).

Because I'm sure I'd get attached to the awesome, then drive full-tilt into the misogyny and racism - BAM! *pain*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Do you watch Supernatural? THE WORST THING EVER HAPPENED.

I will spoil you if you wish.

I like being spoiled! I suffere from non-only-child syndrome.
