lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([st] shiny happy people)

Some flail to go along with last night's fail....

+ Well, the job search is equal parts terrifying and monotonous, so let's talk about happier things, okay?

+ Like the fact that on Saturday I finally got to see Stark Trek.

In the interest of full disclosure, if I'm a Trek fan, it's of Next Generation (Jean Luc Picard > Kirk, yes indeedy). Most of my experience with the original cast is in the movies (don't ever watch the one with the whales and the mom from Seventh Heaven. There is no way to take it seriously). So I wasn't too worried about the new film.

And I liked it. A lot.

First off, the casting director should be given a gazillion Oscars (seriously, why is there no casting Oscar? It ticks me off!). And like everyone else I think it was brilliant to do the whole alternate universe thing. That way, you can have your fun without messing up canon. Smart move, J.J. You might get me to actually like you yet.

Now for the squeeing/capslock/shallowness, kay?

CHEKHOV IS THE MOST ADORABLE THING THAT EVER ADORABLED. SO CUTE. I guess I'm going in for the jailbait now. But his accent was a bit distracting until I watched an interview with him where he decided to play it as a Cold War-era Soviet stereotype, at which point it became a stroke of genius. WHEN HE WENT RUNNING THROUGH THE SHIP SAYING, "I CAN DO THAT" I WANTED TO DIE FROM SHEER CUTENESS. Ooooooh, cute little boy.

I never liked Kirk before. I appreciate Shatner as the pop culture icon that he is, and I enjoy him in a very, very campy, over-the-top sort of way, but I never liked Kirk. But oh, Chris Pine, you made me like him. Also, he is so not the type of guy I usually find attractive at all, but he totally won me over. I have no problem with saying that he's my favorite Kirk.

Quinto, on the other hand, was servicable. I have no real complaints. But he's never going to be Spock to me. NIMOY IS SPOCK, okay? And I knew he was going to show up, but when he did, I still went all flaily. ALSO: JO MARCH IS SPOCK'S MAMA? WTF? Oh, the crack fic potential. And I didn't realize that was Ben Cross playing his dad until we got to the credits and then I felt very silly, because obviously it was Ben Cross. Who else would it be?

Uhura. Zoe was fierce, y'all. And gorgeous. I loved her at the beginning. But I was kind of sad at the end because by the time they got on the ship, she didn't have anything to do but be the love interest. And she is worth so much more than that. Also, I was all set to ship her with Spock...and then I didn't. Probably because there was nothing behind their relationship: all of a sudden she's just kissing him and we have no background at all? Her hooking up with Kirk would make tons more sense since there's actually a little bit of background there. But really, I just want her to be awesome all on her own, and she didn't get a chance to.

That, I think, has a lot to do with the fact that she just didn't have a ton of screentime. As a matter of fact, beside Kirk and Spock the only person I thought got as much as he should have was Bones. And Karl Urban was awesome. Really, I adored him. Except for the fact that I had no clue what kind of accent he was trying to have. But I often find that endearing (Mark Sheppard on Dollhouse? Dexter Fletcher on Press Gang? Oh. Yes.), and I did here. He was pretty fabulous, and I loved his interactions with Kirk.

NOT ENOUGH SIMON PEGG. Repeat it with me: NOT ENOUGH SIMON PEGG. Well, we all know you can never have enough Simon Pegg. And when he was there, he was awesome beyond all reason. So more Scotty next time, y/y?

Not enough Sulu, either, though he did get that awesome ass-kicking moment plus that great reference to TOS with the fencing bit. I really liked Cho in this part. The only thing was, I totally agree with my daddy: "I miss the voice."

So have some George Takei being awesome, y'all! My gift to you!

Back to the movie.

Uh, I seriously thought that guy playing George Kirk was Chris Pine. Until the credits. Yet another reason to give the casting director an Oscar! (Seriously, Academy! Invent a new category just for this woman!)

Tons of really, really funny moments. (I especially liked the bit about Scotty and Captain Archer's dog, and I never even watched Enterprise.) Maybe a bit too much action for my taste--and I say that because, like I mentioned, I felt a few of the characters were underused, and I would have liked to have seen more of them. Also, Kirk was always sporting new bruises and getting his ass kicked, which was pretty hilarious.

DID I MENTION THAT CHEKHOV IS ADORABLE????? HE CAN MISPRONOUNCE THE LETTER V FOR ME ANY DAY.

Yeah. So...there's that.

+ I'm also watching Farscape now, and of course I love it. And yes, yes, I have already developed a massive crush on Ben Browder and I think Claudia Black is awesome. Are we surprised? Not at all.

+ For those of you who love Tarsem Singh's The Fall as much as I do (and for those of you who haven't seen it, I am demanding that you rush to do so right. now. Check out my icon! It's Lee Pace! Everybody loves Lee Pace! Plus an adorable little girl! And the--bar none--most gorgeous movie ever made! And it's an examination of the nature of film and the power of storytelling! You can't go wrong!), you'll be thrilled to see that he's about to start a new movie called War of Gods, which stars Henry Cavill (hello, Albert!) as Theseus fighting the Titans! If you've seen The Fall, you'll understand when I say that THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS IN THE WORLD.

+ Working on my [livejournal.com profile] good__evil challenge entries. The gorgeous art really is inspiring; I really hope I can come up with something worthy of it.

+ For those of you still caught up finals and stuff, good luck!

WICTOR WICKTOR WICKTOR. Anton is the best thing since sliced bread, end dot.

And OMG THAT VIDEO. That man is a god. His voice alone could keep me laughing for weeks.

I think William Shatner is at his absolute best on Boston Legal. He is AMAZING THERE. Every aspect of his humour is used to its fullest and him and James Spader play wonderfully off each other. But I'd never been totally into old ST that much either though I have seen the series that came after. STILL. CHRIS PINE, Y'ALL. Like I've always loved him and watched all his bit parts in all these bad sappy movies, but even knowing he was in this I wasn't enthused or hyped up as everyone else and then he had to be all awesome.

Like this Kirk? This fumbling-but-persistant, head strong, gets-his-ass-kicked-at-every-turn Kirk? I LOVE HIM WITH EVERY BIT OF MY SOUL.

Also word on Uhura. Zoe did so much with so little and it was kinda sad that after she basically fierces her way onto the Enterprise, she doesn't get much to do.

I totally ship everything on that ship, but I'm a Kirk/Uhura supporter first because hey snark! tension! hotness! Also I like that she completely shuts him down and it does not bother him in the least. When she was all YOU'RE GOING TO FAIL, I kind of awwed at the screen. IDEK.

Also I might be slow, but I see your flail flail flail tag and I approve.

Anton is my favoritest ever. That's all.

He really, really is very godlike. And his voice! I want him to like record all the Brothers Grimm's fairytales so I can listen to him reading them at night. How awesome would that be?

I haven't ever watched Boston Legal, actually, but from what I know about it, it seems like he doesn't take himself too seriously on there. Which makes me believe he would be awesome there.

I'd seen Chris Pine in some stuff but had never been impressed, so I was a little underwhelmed when I heard he was cast. BUT HE PROVED ME WRONG. Sheer awesome.

This fumbling-but-persistant, head strong, gets-his-ass-kicked-at-every-turn Kirk? I LOVE HIM WITH EVERY BIT OF MY SOUL. Amen. Just...yes.

Zoe did so much with so little and it was kinda sad that after she basically fierces her way onto the Enterprise, she doesn't get much to do. Exactly.

I'm a big fan of the snark! tension! hotness! too.

Also I like that she completely shuts him down and it does not bother him in the least. Me, too.

Was that you that I had the conversation with about needing that tag? Glad you approve.

CHEKOV WAS PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THAT MOVIE AND I LOVED A LOT OF IT. Also, did not like Chris Pine at all before this movie. Came out of it close to being a fangirl.

I'll agree that Quinto wasn't Nimoy but hell, I think hee did fabulously well with it. And I realyl likied Spock/Uhura, I liked that it was pre-established, that we got the sense that Uhura is the one in control of that relationship and that it's one of equals. But honestly? Anything on that ship makes me happy. Fact.

Anton isn't jailbait! Well, not really? I guess I'm freaked out that he is younger than Zefron but I'd hit that. Every. Damn. Day. (Also he's playing Kyle Reese! HE'S BROUGHT NEW JOY TO TWO EXCELLENT SCI FI FRANCHISES. WANT. HIM.) A link for you, Anton Chekov talking music and being bizarre: http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_startrek/54026.html#cutid1

AND THE BEST OF ALL. http://sparkly-stuff.livejournal.com/186446.html#cutid1
THAT MADE ME HAPPIER THAN I COULD POSSIBLY DESCRIBE.

I apologise for the flail, but also hope you'll appreciate it.

CHEKOV WAS PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THAT MOVIE AND I LOVED A LOT OF IT. Also, did not like Chris Pine at all before this movie. Came out of it close to being a fangirl. Yes, yes, yes, amen to all of the above.

I liked Quinto fine...but I flailed like a flaily thing when Nimoy showed up.

that we got the sense that Uhura is the one in control of that relationship and that it's one of equals. I can like that in theory a lot, but in order to really, really like them, I'd need to see more of them, you know?

There's been lots of flailyness of fandom_secrets (yes, I know, but I can't stop reading!) about him being jailbait cuz he says in the movie he's 17. But I don't know, Anton himself is probably older than that.

I'd hit that. Every. Damn. Day. Well, yeah. That's because you have this thing called taste. ;) And between you and me, he's going to be pretty busy, isn't he?

I also love you muchly for the links.

FLAIL!

Of course I always appreciate your flail! We feed of each other, right?

+ yes to avoiding job-search talks.

+ how awesome was star trek? I hadn't watched any of the tv series beforehand (which is really embarrassing for such a geek, but I'll correct that once I figure out where to start), but I loved it. Chekov was so cute.

Kirk was great, but Spock actually stole the movie for me. Of course, I don't have a previous Spock in my head, but I thought ZQ was sort of awesome. Re:Jo Spock, it took me a while to convince myself that, yes, that really was her, and it was rather random. I think Jennifer Morrison as Kirk's mom was even more jolting for me, though.

Re: Spock/Uhura, I really think they were just trying to cover up how very slashy Spock and Kirk were. And the first S/U kiss was a bit of a blinker, but I can...sort of see it. That's what fanfic is for, after all :P Uhura-the-character seemed more like the type to have a bigger role in a sequel. Perhaps.

There can never be enough Simon Pegg. Never.

+ Farscape is awesome, and gives new meaning to the term space opera. Awesomely. With puppets. And Claudia Awesome Black. I need to finish watching the series.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
+ You, too? Doesn't it suck?

+ Very awesome. Very, very. It's been years since I watched the OT but I remember it being pretty cheesy. I stand by my assertion that NG was an improvement (also, Patrick Stewart is just always going to be cooler than Shatner. HELLO ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, you know? Plus, Professor Xavier).

Quinto definitely worked. I don't have any complaints about him...I just really love Nimoy.

I know about Jo! I was sitting there going, "They couldn't possibly have cast her...could they?" Because in my mind she'll always be young enough to be Jo. The idea that she could be ZQ's mother blew my mind. But yeah, seeing Cameron with a bad dye job as Kirk's mama was weird, too.

I really think they were just trying to cover up how very slashy Spock and Kirk were. You're definitely right.

I hope there's lots more Uhura next time. She's awesome.

I totally agree about Simon Pegg. I adore him to death. I remember watching Hot Fuzz for the first time and literally laughing so hard that tears were streaming down my face. That never happens to me.

+ I'm really enjoying it so far. I have a crush on Ben Browder and John's dorky self. I love how much of a loser everyone else on the ship thinks he is. Yay for puppets! And yes to Claudia Black being beyond awesome. I can't wait to see her really stretch as the series goes on.

The place I found it only has the first two seasons. I'm going to have a nervous breakdown if I can't find the last two somewhere else.

[identity profile] moonlightrick.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
+ very, very much.

+ Haha, well, they definitely caked on the makeup to make Winona Spock's mom, so at least Jo's still somewhere under all those weird fake wrinkles :P

+ Hot Fuzz was hilarious. I didn't like Shaun of the Dead or even Spaced enough to go "Simon Pegg!", but fortunately my sister talked me into it aaaand...that was pretty much it :D

+ Let me know if you need help finding the last two seasons -- I'm pretty sure I know where to look :)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-09-17 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
That icon just kills me. Oh, Gaius.

I still haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, though I want to just because I enjoy him, but Hot Fuzz makes me laugh so hard that I cry.

I definitely will! Thanks so much!

[identity profile] moonlightrick.livejournal.com 2009-09-17 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I looooove this icon.

I didn't like Shaun of the Dead nearly as much as Hot Fuzz (which made my eyes leak), but I know most people do.

[identity profile] visualthinker11.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
star trek!

oh, checkov *fails.*
so i'd never seen the old series until after i saw the movie (with my mother, who has always been a BIG star trek fan), and checkov was just not as cute in the old series. not in the least. :_(

i'm with you there on ahura, though i was glad she never ended up with kirk. he got the ship, you know? i thought losing the girl was humbling. i'm not sure how i felt about spock/ahura, mostly because they had the weird dynamic in terms of whether spock actually wanted her or whether she was just providing comfort, not that the two can't be the same thing.

but mostly, i think, i didn't ship them as much because spock, yeah, was not nimoy. i didn't understand that until i starked watching classic star trek, and man, quinto was good in the movie, but really it is just not the same. i get that now. really.

...the fall KICKS ASS. er. yeah.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Chekhov in the original is disappointing, especially compared to Anton who is the epitome of adorable.

I can see what you mean about losing the girl being humbling. He definitely needs a little of that sometimes.

Yeah, there wasn't enough background for me with Spock/Uhura. Them being close was just out of nowhere. I need more foundation for it, you know?

Yeah, I think Quinto was great--no complaints...except that he isn't Nimoy.

YES IT DOES. Totally one of my favorite movies ever. And I love your little Alexandria icon!

[identity profile] visualthinker11.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
re: spock/uhura, i feel the exact same way.

it is pretty cool how they got nimoy in the movie, though...

thanks! ; )
