DOLLHOUSE!

This is my reaction post to "Echo," which I wrote as I watched, so it's garbled.  I'll probably have some coherent thoughts tomorrow.

The opening with Eliza and Olivia—very, very intriguing.

Eliza, put your helmet on!  You don’t want to mess up that pretty face, do you?

I don’t know how I feel about these backwards memories special effects erasing-ness.  Too over-the-top?

Topher reminds me of Warren.

I’m totally in love with the set-designer.  So Wolfram and Hart-esque.  Is it possible for Zen to be creepy?

Olivia Williams gets the “And Anthony Stewart Head” bit in the credits!

I don’t know how I feel about the credits sequence yet.  I liked seeing all the cast members’ names under their faces on all of Joss's other shows, and I don’t know about it all being shots of Eliza.  And I'll need to listen to the theme song six or seven more times to decide if I really like it, though I love the creepy little bit at the end with Joss's name over the lit-up beds.

All these lovely familiar names at the bottom of the screen!  Tim Minear!  Fain and Craft!  David Solomon!  Just like the good ole days!

Olivia Williams kicks ass already.

There are a lot more actives than I thought there would be running around in the Dollhouse.

And there’s Amy being nothing like Fred.  Or Illyria.  And the scars are kinda cool.  She’s tentative but in a much calmer way than Fred ever was.

TAHMOH!!!!!!!!

Huh?  Does Sierra know Tahmoh?

I like how they’re actually acknowledging objections people might have to why someone would hire an active.  Very Joss-like.

“Something more extreme.  Something more specific.  Something perfect.”  Awesome line.

What’s with the boxing?  Not that watching Tahmoh kick ass while shirtless isn’t hot, but what’s up with it?

DUDE!!! Did you see that kick????

I really, really like Boyd already.  He seems like such a conflicted sweetheart.  And an ex-cop, that's cool.  And he seems to really care about Echo.  I approve of him in the Giles/Shepherd Book role.

EDWARD JAMES OLMOS REFERENCE FTW!!!  (Though Adama has not been comforting of late, as May can attest.)  Joss, you are such a geek.

The details of the glasses thing is beyond cool.

That is so cool about where the memories come from, from amalgams of other people.  But how do they get their hands on those memories?

“Achievement is balanced by fault, by a lack.  Can’t have one without the other.”  I like Topher's little speech.

“She also has asthma.”  There’s no way that isn’t going to be important.

TAHMOH at a bar!

Victor is totally cute.  I approve.

The flashes to her memories of seeing Sierra—creepy!

Asthma!

Ha!  Victor and Paul in the bathroom!

Asthma!

I don’t know about these commercial breaks.  I kind of hope that this isn’t an every week thing.  It’ll make everything awfully messy on DVD, don’t you think?

So is she remembering the memories of the woman whose memories she had installed?  Or (possibly) Caroline’s memories?

And Boyd’s trying to do the right thing!  I knew I liked him!

Ah, and there’s the answer about whose memories.

“We have a mission!”  I like him.  Lots.

“We prefer to call them engagements.”  Oh, she kicks ass.  Ice.  Cold.

RIVER AND FAITH!  SO AWESOME!  And yeah, I’ll sign up for date night with the two of them!  Well, really with Tahmoh and Enver, actually.  But Eliza and Summer can be my BFFs.  Though the actual commercial seemed to me pretty disturbing--oh, look at the hot chicks, watch for the hot chicks, they could be anybody at all, as long as they're hot--the sight of the two of them together did make me happy.  If they do it again, I hope it doesn't give off as creepy a vibe.

Huh.  If the memory-girl killed herself, how did they get ahold of her memories?

How did Echo know about the fridge?  Is it just because that’s what happened to her?

DUDE!  Sierra kicks ass!

Oooooh!  I really liked the cut from her carrying Davina to walking out of the memory-wipe room.

Oooooh!  Alpha!  Awesome!

Okay, who’s the naked guy?  And the dead guy?  I mean, guys?

GREAT ENDING.

And I can honestly say I’ve never been so happy to see a little grr-arghing monster in all my life.

I don’t know.  It pretty good.  Intriguing.  With lots of pretty people and the potential for some great development.  But it wasn't on my top-anything list as far as pilots go.  I've seen tons better.  And Eliza didn't convince me that she can be as versatile as this show requires.

But I’m going to take my own advice and not judge anything till a few more episodes in, because Joss’s shows just aren’t the “watch an episode now and then” kind.  I need to see how this all develops before I make any sort of real judgment calls.  The teaser for coming stuff was pretty cool, though.  I'll definitely be sticking with this.

le as this show requires.

I wonder about that too. Still, it was fun and I loves me trash tv.

I think Amy will prove to be an "active" that was damaged but still works for the Dollhouse

I was trying to quote "as versatile as this show requires"

I agree--it was fun. And I really love your theory about Amy.

I agree not my favorite pliot by Joss but I'll be watching

That pretty much covers my feelings about it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I had a couple reservations, but seeing the "Grr. Argh." ME zombie on my TV again made it allllllll worth it.

I had a couple reservations, but seeing the "Grr. Argh." ME zombie on my TV again made it allllllll worth it. I KNOW, RIGHT?

It was definitely an intriguing pilot. The whole idea kind of creeps me out, but I supppose that's the point. I'm definitely going to keep watching!

The whole idea kind of creeps me out, but I supppose that's the point. I think it really is, which is why I'm okay with it. If I didn't think it wasn't supposed to be creepy, I'd stop watching immediately. Otherwise it's just exploitation.

But yeah, I think the show has tons of potential, and I'm definitely keeping watching.

Topher reminds me of Warren.

He reminded me of Andrew. He even looks like Andrew IMO.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He reminds me of Andrew in the way he looks, definitely. But more of a Warren-esque, "Women should be my toys; let's play with their minds!" I'm really looking forward to this week's ep because Steve DeKnight wrote it, and he wrote "Dead Things," so I know he can go all out with the darkness.

But yeah. I've officially decided that Topher is Warren in Andrew's body.

[identity profile] sowell.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Topher reminds me of Warren.

Same person. I'm convinced.

And there’s Amy being nothing like Fred. Or Illyria. And the scars are kinda cool. She’s tentative but in a much calmer way than Fred ever was.

She's so awesome. I'm so happy she's back on my TV screen.

DUDE!!! Did you see that kick????

Um, YES. Let's have him do something like that once a week, mmmkay?

I really, really like Boyd already. He seems like such a conflicted sweetheart. And an ex-cop, that's cool.

I like him, too. Resident compassionate badass.

EDWARD JAMES OLMOS REFERENCE FTW!!!

That was so awesome. Such a casual drop, and so fantastic.

“We prefer to call them engagements.” Oh, she kicks ass. Ice. Cold.

She was probably my favorite part. So much potential for that character. OMG, fanfic. Want. Now.

All in all, I approve. I was sort of hesitant at the beginning, but by the end, I was like: okay, will be back next week.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Same person. I'm convinced. It's Warren taking over Andrew's body!

Um, YES. Let's have him do something like that once a week, mmmkay? I completely concur.

Resident compassionate badass. Great way of describing him.

That was so awesome. Such a casual drop, and so fantastic. I'm loving the fact that Joss is such a huge BSG geek.

OMG, fanfic. Want. Now. I know! I'm thinking she's going to be the one I'll want to read/write the most, definitely.

Oh, I'll definitely be back. It has so much potential; I really hope it gets a chance to realize it all.

The opening with Eliza and Olivia—very, very intriguing. I was severly dissapointed at how much she was bringing an almost "Faith-ness" to this part. And then I kept thinking, "AH It's Faith! The later years!" Only because she mentioned something about how'd she mess something up just like "she" always said she would. She kept me thinking Buffy which kept me thinking Faith which lapsed over into the beautiful Joss-verse which ... *drools* ... What?

Eliza, put your helmet on! You don’t want to mess up that pretty face, do you? Dude! I DIDN'T GET WHY SHE DID THAT! *panics*

The sets had me gah-gah and drooling. It looks so deliciously spa like, but brings back th eold firm look of Wolfram and Hart.

Zen = anything.

I noticed that too! But I hate the sort of season two and three Bones credit they pulled, with just shots of the lead(s) and support cast in the backround. *sighs* A bit dissapointed.

The on,ly part of the credits I really enjoyed was the end. The sort of mystic chiming.

Olivia Williams would totally be the Coredlia/Angel/Giles figure in this series. If we meshed them together into her awesome kick-ass-ness. =D

There are a lot more actives than I thought there would be running around in the Dollhouse. Well it is a DOLLhouse. *giggles*

Amy Acker's character is totally intruiging. I didn't get that it was a scar at first. I thought it was a whisp of hair until Eliza Dusku's character touched her face. *facepalm* But you're right. She has a Fred qualit to her. In a more emotinally and physically calming way. She's subtly interesting. (and did I mention the hair? BECAUSE TEH HAIR IS TEH AWESOME!)

“Something more extreme. Something more specific. Something perfect.” Awesome line. "You have everything. You want something more."
It's so ... pun completely intended, perfect.

I know, I didn't get that either. At first, it elasped from Sierra, to him, so I jumped to the conclusion that it was one of her memories watching him kick ass (how extremely terrifyingly hott) but then it kept jumping back and forth which sort of ruined it a bit for me, but meh.

THAT KICK WAS KICKASS!!! IT BRINGS ME BACK TO THE GREAT COREOGRAPHY!!!!! And not only did I have to rewatch it to see if it was either his fist or his actual foot, I almost fell out of my chair is so happy for me!

I really, really like Boyd already. He's like the conflicted Giles to her Buffy. *sighs*

I nearly cried hearing dear Edward's name. Joss is down to eart. (haha, bad pun)

I loved that whole explanation. Of the wipe of people and surging them into other's. It's so complex, it's simple. It's like a detail sketch plan. like ... creating a character and mindlessly turning them into someone else. It's fantastic.

Topher = Guy who makes all the motivational speeches.

“She also has asthma.” There’s no way that isn’t going to be important. Dude. Don't ever assume that. Everything has importance in Joss-world! *huffs*

TAHMOH taking pictures of a dude who'll he'll hold a gun to! *iz giddy* He's gonna be so fucking kick-ass in this.

I TOLD YOU THERE WAS IMPORTANCE TO THE ASTHMA!!!

Ha! Victor and Paul in the bathroom! Is there a secret innuendo in there?

ASTHMA!
'You can't-GASP-fight a-GASP-ghost"
Oh dramatic affect.

I was wondering that too. It's a deeper complex thing. Was this the thing Caroline was refering to when she was ranting all frantic in the begining?

Boyd and Olivia Williams's character are on the same level of kick-ass-ness. Predictions of tons of headbuttingness are in their future. *sighs* His whole premise about coutnering what she said earlier:
"We Help People"
And he totally switched it up. "Let Echo help this girl."
I LOVE HIM!!!

Huh. If the memory-girl killed herself, how did they get ahold of her memories?I didn't really get that either. Was it like a Dumblodore type thing where he abstracted it before she totally went wacko?

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
But she had like ... two lines. *giggles* Don't get me wrong. I wanna like Sierra. Girls with guns always kick ass.

The last part is uber intruiging in a creepy!naked!way.

Eliza doesn't seem all that versitle. Only because we've seen her in a speicic genre, playing practically the same person. We need to see more unfold before everything can be judged.
