Hey, y'all!

Get your Xander!hate on! [livejournal.com profile] eleusis_walks is doing his 30 Days of BtVS, and even though there are many, many topics I strongly disagree with him on, he is always thoughtful and awesome and interesting. And the things I do agree with him on? I agree violently.

Like our mutual hate for the ultimate Nice Guy Xander Harris. He basically lists every single hateful thing that Xander ever says/does and I am glorying in my hate. He also has a love-post devoted to Anya, which I haven't gotten to read yet, but I know is wonderful because anything involving Anya is wonderful. And [livejournal.com profile] eleusis_walks loves Dawn and Cordy and Jenny and basically a ton of awesome ladies, so I forgive him for not loving my boy and my girl enough. ;D

So join the hate fest! Or if you like Xander...well, I would like to hear why. Because it is beyond my understanding.

People are always going to have strong different opinions. As long as we're not discounting each others' opinions, I don't really have a problem. Yeah, I'm hurt when people bash on Buffy or Spike, but I've learned just to ignore it because taking it to heart does nothing good. Somebody's always going to hate what you love and love what you hate; that's the nature of fandom. Just respect other people and that they have different opinions, and you're all good. That's what I was trying to do here--do you think I didn't do that? If so, I will gladly apologize to anyone.

I, for one, am excited about the comic. But I think Emmie and Maggie and I might be alone in that!

*shakes head* I really don't think it was you, or the many comments on here. After all, there are many Xander defenders on here too. I think she read the original post by (can't remember or find his name) because she actually uses one of his words (icky) and complains about how he listed all the worst things Xander ever did. That sounds to me more like the hate post is what she saw. Maybe she got there from here (as I did), but I don't think your post is what caused her to feel bad. I probably wouldn't have followed the link if I hadn't seen her post first and been curious about whether or not she was over-reacting to something. I'd say not, given her love for the character and the pretty much non-stop dislike expressed by the first guy. She said she shouldn't have read it as she knew it would upset her. My comment was that she probably shouldn't have read it. There's no sense reading something if you know it's going to hurt you or that you're going to violently disagree.

I find it kind of interesting (and surprising) that so many people actually hate Xander (or any other character really). I've always assumed that the Spike bashers and Angel bashers were just out of control shippers, and the Buffy bashers were just over-zealous Spike lovers. I can identify plenty of people by their favorite characters, but not nearly as many by the ones they don't like.

Okay, good. I always want to make sure that my journal is a safe place for anyone's opinion (so long as it doesn't disenfranchise the powerless, but that's never happened before, so I'm not worried). And I have greatly appreciated the very eloquent defenses here as well, so I wanted to make sure this didn't read as hateful towards anyone who might love him.

. There's no sense reading something if you know it's going to hurt you or that you're going to violently disagree.

Exactly. And when he writes about Spike, I'm not going to read it for exactly this reason.

I can identify plenty of people by their favorite characters, but not nearly as many by the ones they don't like.

This is such a good thing! And I don't want anyone to associate me with hatred towards a particular character. Like I said, this is a one-time deal with me; I can guarantee I'll never make another post about how much I hate Xander. Just getting it out of my system before I move back to the love. I always want to be associated with loving Buffy or Spike or whoever. Love is definitely a better thing to be associated with.
