Meme time

I'm having one of those nights where I can't concentrate on anything and nothing holds my interest and basically I'm just twiddling my thumbs waiting till it's late enough so that I can reasonably go to sleep (side effect of depression? I'm going with yes, since this literally never happened to me before I hit this place).

Since there has been much discussion of A) the definition of OTP and B) Cordy/Angel on my flist of late, both of which I've enjoyed tremendously, let's do this one, okay?

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] anythingbutgrey, she of the awesome Buffyverse thoughts.

FIVE FACTS FROM MY PERSONAL CANON MEME. ask me about a pairing, i'll give you some factoids.

Let's try to stick to pairings I actually like, okay? Feel free to ask me how I feel about a given one.

And hopefully I'll, like, actually get around to answering them.

Also, I have a new layout. I think it's pretty while also being unobtrusive. I wanted something less busy and a bit easier to read. [livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42[livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42[livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42

ANGEL/CORDELIA, FRED/GUNN, WES/LILAH.

CONSIDER IT A LATE BIRTHDAY PRESENT.

HAHAHA. It has been sooooo long since I've watched the show! I'm going to have to think about it! But I do love me all of those pairings--I love how we are of ONE MIND when it comes to pairings on that show!

Did I seriously miss your birthday? While I was off brooding and watching cheesy kdramas? I'm gonna feel horrible if I did.

IDK - BUT WE WEREN'T ALWAYS. USED TO BE BANGEL, REMEMBER. i was re-watching prophecy girl this evening and generally fast forwarded through it because ats >>> all things, but i must say they remain VERY pretty together, even if on a conscious level that ship makes no sense. how did they do that? how did they convince such a large portion of fandom that a ship that was kind of off its rocker ridiculous was the best otp of all the otps in all the lands? HOW DID YOU DO IT, JOSS? TELL ME.

MY BIRTHDAY WAS TWO MONTHS AGO, LOL. WORRY NOT.

I SOMETIMES FORGET BECAUSE I ASSOCIATE YOU WITH RILEY.

I really don't know how they did. I think the plotting was really fantastic with the whole Angelus thing, and SMG could act even then (DB couldn't, though. It took getting his own show for him to figure it out, but I give him all the props in the world because he learned and became very god) and when she cries it makes you FEEL HER PAIN. Also, you'd be surprised at how many people just believe in the whole idea of soulmates and so buy into things like that. *sigh* But I just do not know.

OKAY I FEEL BETTER.

LOL IT'S TRUE IT'S TRUE. OTP 4 LYF. i love that kid. corn fed iowa boy.

the thing is - i totally buy into soulmates. love it. embrace it. let's go. but i don't think it's the sort of thing you realize right away, necessarily? like, i totally 100% think that angel and cordelia are ~soulmates~ as i would define it. but they certainly didn't know that at first sight - because they had to become who they were meant to become, their true selves, if you were, before those souls~ could match up. absolutely. otp. hate the word soulmate because it looks awkward and horrible, but, idk, destinies, fates, loves? i can buy into that. just not the way b/a spun it. i'm telling you though - the powers that be made those kids fall in love because it served the mission. not real. THE SECOND I CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION IT BECAME MY CANON AND I WILL NEVER LET IT GO EVER.

No, I get what you're saying! I definitely don't think we're to far apart here--I've always talked about it this way: I think my parents are soulmates in that right now there's no one else for them. But they didn't start out that way. They've spent the last twenty-five years becoming soulmates. Like you say about souls matching up. It involves a lot of hard work and it isn't at first sight (though I believe in profound attraction at first sight, that's not love--love is so much deeper and more faithful and committed and sacrificial than that). And I don't believe in destiny (I'm about as far from Calvinist as you can get and still be Christian. TEAM FREE WILL) myself but real, powerful love is definitely something I can get behind.

the powers that be made those kids fall in love because it served the mission. not real. THE SECOND I CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION IT BECAME MY CANON AND I WILL NEVER LET IT GO EVER.

I AGREE WITH THIS COMMENT.
