I...don't know. I don't think it actually is good? I HAVE NO IDEA. I really, really don't know what's going on. It was the most shocking thing ever, and I feel like I should be excited...but I'm just confused and slightly scared.
WEIRD.
Also, your icon pretty much was my reaction to this episode....
(One of these days I'll live in the States again, and will be able to at least sample all these shows you love without hanging up on my stupid third-world cable Internet connection...)
OMG IDEK!! I am so torn between flailing like a flaily thing and WTFing!!
I'm kind of leaning toward loving it, though, because the whole time I was like "WTF is with Britta suddenly deciding she wants Jeff?" and I thought it was totally lame and stupid to have her competing with Slater, and then they had the whole JEFF MUST CHOOSE thing, and I was like "THIS IS STUPID" but then OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG JEFFANDANNIE!!!!! So I kind of love it for subverting expectations because the "proper" solution would totally have been for him to choose Britta and he didn't.
Like, on the one hand, it's Jeff/Annie, so YES. Plus, Annie was acting far more like an adult than the other two ladies in this episode. And she looked so lovely and grown up!
I think the episode was weak, but I was flailing all the way through it because Jeff and Annie were acting all BFF-y. Like, talking to each other like friends and adults, and I was thinking, "This is all I need to fuel my love of this ship. This right here."
AND THEN IT HAPPENED.
And I totally see what you're saying about subverting the choosing thing, but at the same time, I don't feel like there was enough lead-up for this to be sustainable. I trust the writers because they've been nearly flawless so far, but I'm just really confused as to where they're going with this. I just don't think it'll end up as well for our ship as we'd like to think. Not that it'll get sunk--because they aren't the type to do that--but that it'll be more complicated than people anticipate.
Britta telling Jeff she loved him was STUPID. It made me angry on Britta's behalf. It didn't fit, and I like Britta. I could have dealt with the two of them being together as long as they still acted like themselves. But this was just dumb.
WORD. Like, the whole time I kept expecting it to be a joke or something, like she was just messing with him or they were going to twist the will-they-won't-they trope somehow, but then she said it and it just stretched out awkwardly, and sometime after it came back from the commercial break, it dawned on me that she probably actually meant it, and that is SO NOT BRITTA.
I agree that it's definitely not going to be a happy ending for Jeff/Annie, but I just have NO idea where they'll go with it. I am so caught off-guard.
It really burns me because I really love Britta! And doing that, like that, in public, for that reason just did a great disservice to her character, I think.
but I just have NO idea where they'll go with it. I am so caught off-guard.
And I have a feeling we'll speculate all summer and still never figure it out.
Maybe they will fix it and make Britta all better next season? *hopes*
Okay, speculation: 1. Jeff and Annie will totally do it like bunnies all summer, but it will have ended by the time the semester starts, and it'll be awkward. 2. They'll still be together, but they don't tell the group, because THAT would be awkward, but of course, they act all weird and it eventually comes out. 3. They DO tell the group, which results in Britta being all weird and jealous some more. 4. Jeff and Annie will pretend it didn't happen and three months later, they'll still be where they are right now.
I was laughing like crazy during this episode. Also, did they use a different camera or something? The picture quality was so crisp and it felt more cinematic in general.
Troy and his cookie! Troy's friendship with Abed is a too big delicious cookie. The year gets a D for delicious! Abed clicking the lights off in the study room with final lines to give it that finale feel. Jumping the shark. Troy saw an ep where a guy literally jumped a shark and it was the best episode EVER! Troy moving in with Pierce sounds more like a spinoff and lol Troy's getting outfitted with a uniform. WTF Pierce. Also, the banana jokes and Pierce saying Troy would've laughed if Abed had done "banana penis"--hello, homoerotic BFFs!
Okay, I bought the Britta thing. 'Cause she kinda jumped off the deep end there. She got set up for it by Shirley urging her to admit her feelings, then she got all into the competitiveness thing with Prof Slater which is a perfectly natural thing to do at the end of the year when you're worried about where you stand and what all these new feelings mean, and she just dove into the public act with this crazy crazitude. And no, she doesn't mean it. Clearly she has feelings for Jeff, but it's not the sort of thing that's fed by a public declaration. That was ego and desperation and competitiveness which are all very Britta. Britta who likes to think she's special and hot. Remember how Britta was all disturbed by Annie and Shirley not doing activism the right way? Britta likes her unique badge. Also also, remember how Britta was so determined that everyone think she was funny that she broke into the science lab to get a frog and ended up unleashing a dead body into the quad? Yeah, Britta has issues with how people perceive her and what's more, she'll go to extreme lengths to go after something she "thinks" she wants. (Don't we all?) I mean, Britta is kinda bipolar. She can been the most mature and sincere one in the room, then she can devolve into a sniping match with a bunch of teenagers because HOW DARE THEY INSULT HER. She's both sides and the mature and sincere side would have retreated after Abed's kegger and had a nice summer perhaps texting with Jeff and doing some activist stuff. But the ID that is Britta was awakened and suddenly she's going out of her way to prove herself as worthy because deep down she's worried she's screwed up her life and maybe she's trying to be a good person but in a way that she's not sure actually makes her a good person, so she sometimes doubts and gets distracted by flashy affirmations that result in public declarations.
Also, ROFLMAO at Tranny Dance and Tranny Queen. And ZOMG the Dean is into Dalmatian Furries!!!
The ending was just awesome imo. And I loved Jeff finally reaching a mature point where even though he thought he was running away from love, he was really running away from false declarations and public pressure to be The Man. Instead, he fades into the shadows, meets Annie outside and has a real emotional connection and a empassioned kiss.
And you so know that Pierce is going to try to dress Abed up like a house servant and it's going to be RIDICULOUS.
Actually...all of that makes loads of sense, Emmie. I was still looking at it on a literal level, where we're supposed to believe her. I was just so stunned I couldn't take it any other way. But this show is way too smart for that, and your take absolutely works for me, and now I feel so much better about the Britta thing. THANK YOU.
And ZOMG the Dean is into Dalmatian Furries!!! I was so not surprised by this, but I still can't believe they went there.

OMG YES I LOVE YOU.
I'm so glad you're around to fix these things for me!
Yeah. This is an episode that needs time to process. The good thing about insomnia is you get the videos the minute they're up on hulu (and unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with Joss' Glee; don't know what I was expecting, but the whole show's going down a Very Special Episode path where they're trying to humanize everyone and make them likable/relatable, but that really puts a cork on the satire. The first few episodes were brilliant because they combined such generally unlikable characters (who you like for their unlikability) with such heartwarming musical numbers.Wow - tangent), so I just finished Community. And basically? Whatever Emmie said. I still need processing time, and actually would have liked more Abed commentary on the usual tropes of TV love triangles, but it was a brilliant contrast between the immature Britta and Slater and the grown-up realizations Annie and Jeff made, which made the kiss more real to me. I felt good about the kiss because both Jeff and Annie were being so adult and honest about it. So . . . yay?!
I am totally over Glee now and have moved on to the "I'm glad Glee exists if only so that Community can make fun of it" camp. Even the presence of NPH couldn't save it for me this past week.
and actually would have liked more Abed commentary on the usual tropes of TV love triangles, I always want more of that.

I just hope we don't skip over their interactions, because I really want to see the fall-out of all of this, and it makes me nervous that this happened in the finale. I WANT TO SEE THEM.

HAHAHA! That was awesome.

Well, okay. I kind of saw that coming when he didn't say anything to Britta.
That kiss? That kiss was awesome. Surreal, but, um. Whoa.
My brain still needs to process that. TOO WEIRD. AND AWESOME. I seriously didn't see the show going in that direction.

I agree completely. That was my reaction as well.
