Amazing how a day can so totally turn around. One minute we're talking domestic Spuffy, the next...

Dear Joss Whedon, Scott Allie, et. al.,

If you break Emmie's heart, I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever forgive you. Not in a million years. :P

No love,

Me

P.S. Jane? Please come back! We need you! If anyone can open these guys' eyes to their own privilege, it's you! These guys need a HBIC, and I nominate you.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

ALSO I LOVE JANE ESPENSON I LOVE HOW MUCH SHE LOVES TO DISMANTLE PRIVILEGE I LOVE HOW MUCH SHE LOVES GAY STUFF I LOVE HOW SHE IS SO FUCKING AWESOME.

i don't like how she's running caprica and i'm still bored.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Emmie is my favorite person ever, and she is sad. Also, earlier today she and I were having a conversation about why we loved Buffy with Spike because of how feminist it is. Which you would have gotten a kick out of. Whenever I have a feminism discussion I think of you.

JANE ESPENSON IS MADE OF WIN IN EVERY SINGLE WAY CONCEIVABLE.

Except that Caprica is no good.

Link?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, it was a very brief conversation. We didn't go into depth, and it was mostly Emmie writing and then me frantically agreeing, but I think we should tag-team a meta on it! It'd be awesome!

Here it is!

[identity profile] anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha i do love when people associate me with feminism. as everyone i know tends to do? idk i love my life. how is buffy/spike feministy, though? i... have never been on this boat. EXPLICA POR FAVOR danke.

so sad about caprica. so pretty, so well written, so poorly plotted.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely associate you with it! It makes me happy! You're like my feminist lj soulmate!

Short answer: because she's in control, and he follows her lead. The whole relationship is one giant inversion of stereotypical gender roles (which I kind of wrote a paper about once). But I posted the link to the brief discussion a few comments [down -- edit: er, up!], if you want to follow it.

It IS so pretty! As is evidenced by your gorgeous, gorgeous icon!

And it makes me think Jane needs to be able to create her own show. No more of this writing for shows created by men. GIVE HER HER OWN.

YAY! :D

interesting. i see that link, i understand though i don't think i can agree. my brain still goes RAPE ABUSE KIDNAP FLAIL but that's why... i am not a spuffy shipper even though i have this icon and love that whole ~when i say i love you it's not because i want you or because i can't have you~ speech that i TOTALLY HAVE MEMORIZED A+ WILLIAM i c ur poetry thar.

also yyyy jane needs her own show involving fierce women, lesbians, feminist men, and possibly space. i do like pretty people in space. that worked well for her.

Well, let it be said that I mostly ship them either A) when he has a soul YAY S7! or B) based on potential in S5. I love what they did with the relationship in S6 (except for the AR, which was poorly executed; it could have been handled much better), but I don't ship them then. Neither one of them were in a position to have a healthy relationship at that point, and they certainly weren't healthy.

But. In S6, she was still in control the vast majority of the time. So even when she was weak, when she was making bad decisions, etc. she was still in control of her own destiny (except for "Seeing Red"). That's what makes me most upset about Angel--he constantly tries to make decisions for her and is SO DAMN PATRONIZING. Anyway, in my paper, I wrote about Buffy and Spike as a Foucauldian binary with Buffy on top and Spike trying to displace her, but he only--almost--manages in "Seeing Red," which is about him trying to assert his "masculinity" after an entire show wherein he plays the female role--and it backfires. Big time. Him trying to embrace a stereotypically masculine role is damaging and hurtful. (I was actually going to write my paper about Buffy having one foot in the feminine and one foot in the masculine and that when she gets out of balance things are bad, but I got sidetracked. I'd still like to write that.) But the binary settles again with Buffy on top in S7, and she stays there.

Throughout S7, Spike plays the damsel role, Buffy's the knight, protecting and saving him. It's fascinating stuff. They're constantly undermining gender assumptions AND I LOVE IT.

Also, I had a conversation yesterday about how Spike is the housewife in any future relationship they have. Hee!

My enjoyment of both S6 and their relationship in general is very specific to me. I don't at all think that any of my conclusions were intended by the writers, but the author's dead, right? And I can see how people would arrive at other conclusions. But it just hits a ton of my feminist kinks. [livejournal.com profile] rahirah always says that they're the best queer couple she ever saw on TV--she never connected to Willow/Tara as a lesbian, but she connected to the metaphor for being in the closet that's prevelant all through the Buffy/Spike relationship.

ANYWAY. I've rambled enough about this! So I'll say that your icon is so very pretty and:

i TOTALLY HAVE MEMORIZED A+ WILLIAM i c ur poetry thar.
LOVE. IT.

[eta] YES! ALL OF THAT IN SPACE. YES YES YES. That would be my TV soulmate.

I love this post. If marriages between live journal posts and women were legalized in the state of California, I'd marry this post.

Emmie is our Pollyanna. You make her cry, we rage.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
They are legal in Lauren-world. I will officiate! :D

Emmie is our Pollyanna. You make her cry, we rage.

EXACTLY!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I don't know how to take that. It's a compliment but reminds me of James Marsters reaction to being called an ingenue. :P

Also, I'd be happy to witness this marriage.

Word. Now I don't get feminist-ragey often, but Buffy Summers is my BREAKING POINT. *gets out chainsaw*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
OH YAY JOIN MY FEMINIST RAGE-A-THON!

*gets out rocket launcher*

Also, your icon is GAH-GUS!

[identity profile] ohwaluvusbab.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] emmz13's fine work.

ICON LOVE RECIPROCATED.

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get feminist-ragey often

I never personally self-identified myself as a feminist until I met Buffy Summers. I never personally got ragey over something until I met Comics!Buffy Summers. Now, with Scott Allie's instigation, I'm learning all sorts of neat things about myself! LIKE HE MAKES ME FEMINIST-RAGEY WHEN HE MAKES EMMIE SADFACE!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
This comment made my day. I think Emmie will be gratified!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs*

UNLEASH THE RAGE! SMITE THE ENCROACHERS!

[identity profile] ohwaluvusbab.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
IKR!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Feminist-ragey. YES. And Buffy Summers is my BREAKING POINT, too. IT's ON.

Yes. If anyone ever deserved to be vindicated for their faith in these comics, it's Emmie.

She's the litmus test for good storytelling - reasonable, rational, ready to believe.

Joss had better suit up, for her sake.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
YES. Yes to all of the above.

I seriously am more angry on her behalf than about anything else. SUCH FAITH SHOULD BE REWARDED. NOT STOMPED ON. IT'S A CRUEL WORLD.

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about the comics. But Emmie being sad makes me sad. :(

*hands out kittens*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know! I'm seeing this whole thing through Emmie-colored glasses, and it makes me sadface!

But kittens! Kittens are happiness!

I...may have to see if I can whip up a kitten!fic tomorrow sometime to make her happy!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Amazing how a day can so totally turn around. One minute we're talking domestic Spuffy, the next...

OH GOD. HAHA, I KNOW! I was saying to Eowyn as I was posting that my journal now looked like I was bi-polar. I went from ecstatic and "delighted" to sad and depressed beyond belief. Yo-yo emotions!

If you break Emmie's heart, I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever forgive you. Not in a million years. :P

Love you always. ♥

And I just want Jane to show up and slap these guys upside the head! PLEASE JANE. WE NEED YOU.

Edited 2010-04-06 04:02 (UTC)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
It was such a giddy day! We were talking about KITTENS FOR GOODNESS SAKE. And Buffy and Spike being in a band! And brain-orgies!

AND THEN.

Love you more! ♥

How much more of my hero would she be if she did? Like, she already is, for being so accomplished and awesome in an arena that's so male-dominated, and then for passing along her wisdom to all and sundry. But if she did this...my head would explode with love.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like, want to get in touch with her through Twitter or something. Like, entreat her to come down and make the pain and madness stop.

JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannneeee!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Gah. Don't tempt me. I might actually have to get a Twitter!

Please, please, please tell me that was a "SHAAAAAANNNNEEEE!!!" reference. If it isn't--lie to me.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
It is, bb. It is! (Except I have no idea what you're talking about so please enlighten me!)

I think we need to compile our concerns in an intelligent way and send out a beacon to Jane. It could be like the Bat Signal, only Jane-ish.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Aw! Sad! Shane is a Western about this lone gunman guy who rides into town and part of the plot is how he changes the life of this little boy, and the final scene of the movie is the gunman riding off into the sunset while the little boy yells "SHANE!" really loud. It's a thing. Kinda famous-y. Like Lloyd Dobler with the boombox. That kinda thing. go here!

Seriously, I wish it had been such a reference. It would have been such a clever one!

A Jane Signal! I would contribute to this fund!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wait! I do know that! Hahaha, DUH. I actually haven't seen it, but I know of it!

And we so need a Jane-signal.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
You were inadvertently clever! Yay!

Word.

[identity profile] local-max.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Jane! Come back! Come back Jane! Jane, come back! ...bye, Jane.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! Yes. Exactly like that.

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
We need to make up new lyrics to the Jaynestown anthem!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
YES.

[identity profile] bobthemole.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Jane Espenson as sexism-fighting super hero.

Now THAT'S a comic I'd buy.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

And I feel like it's pretty safe to say she wouldn't let her character be turned into a sex object. NO OBJECTIFICATION FTW!

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wanna say "... Huh?"

I want to be in the ratn!

Link in my reply to the first comment.

JOIN THE RANT!

[identity profile] serendipily.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I say whoever wrote that is on my list of favorite feminist/related feminist from now on? She holds a permanant stance. Cause she's ripped open the analysis and it's true. It's like Joss doesn't take the comic s, or us seriously. It's a bit heartbreaking actually. *sighs*

[identity profile] bobthemole.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
NOBODY GETS AWAY WITH MAKING EMMIE SAD!

BOB CRUSH!!! GRRRRRR!!
