Thinky thoughts of the Spike-ish kind

This is one of those "I'm having a conversation on whedonesque; tell me what you think about what I'm saying" posts.

This particular conversation starts out about Willow/Tara (and my thoughts line up precisely with Emmie's, big surprise there) and then becomes about S6 and then, finally, becomes about Spike.

And I just wrote a novel.

But I feel like I left something vital out.

Any thoughts?

While funny Spike is good, I wish they'd showed the chipping and subsequent helplessness/starving/etc of Spike in a less humorous light. Sure, all the other characters on the show saw it as humorous, but it would have been more compelling if they went to a darker place with it.

The "humorous light" really bothers me. Yes, Spike is an evil vampire at that point, but that doesn't make torturing him okay. Portraying the chip, helplessness, and starvation as funny seems deeply, deeply wrong to me.

Same here. Hence, my issues with 'comical relief' Spike :p

I completely agree. Besides, as much as I love the lightheartedness of that season, I sometimes wish it'd had a little more seriousness sometimes. They could have benefited from Spike having an existential crisis or something. Plus, it just makes them seem mean, like they're picking on a little kid on the playground.

Yes, he's evil. By all means tie him up, keep an eye on him. But all the little sniping comments? Not cool. Y'all were all the outsiders once, Scoobies. Have a little heart.
