lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([misc] must be stopped)

grrrr...

People, please tell me to stop reading random people's reactions to the new S8 comic. I've loved what some of y'all on my flist (and, by extension, some of the people on your flists) have had to say, but there are people justifying evil all over the internet, and I cannot handle it. It just makes me so furious, and I want to engage all of them, and that will lead to my life being sucked away, and I could be doing way more constructive things like writing angsty Spuffy babyfic for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy and beta-ing for my favorite people.

Tell. Me. To. Stop.

In other, happier news: BUFFY SUMMERS. DONNA NOBLE. TAMI TAYLOR. AERYN SUN. JOAN HOLLOWAY. VERONICA MARS. PARKER. AND OTHER AWESOME WOMEN. DOMINATING FANDOM STEEL CAGE MATCH.

PLUS: MY ICON. YES.

Also, I'm watching Wizards of Waverly Place (yes, I'm lame, but I have a massive girlcrush on Selena Gomez), and OMG SELENA GOMEZ AND DAVID HENRIE. IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR ACTORS PLAYING SIBLINGS TO HAVE SO MUCH CHEMISTRY. STOP IT NOOOOOOW. YOU'RE MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE.

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you're going through. I admittedly have never read the comics. But I can't. look. away. For the first time EVAR, I'm following a thread on a forum because some of the people are doing insightful textual analysis. Of course, the Bangel shippers turn it around and call the insightful textual analysis character bashing, then turn around and do some bashing of there own, seemingly oblivious to the obvious implications that this is not a good thing.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you mean. I'm following similar conversations, and I can't stop following them and I'm getting ANGRY.

*sigh*

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better, I just spent and hour and $90 explaining the Buffyverse to my therapist.

Yes, the therapist needed to get involved.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I find that strangely endearing. : )

[identity profile] bobthemole.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
WIN.

[identity profile] ladyofthenoodle.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, when I tried to explain the Buffyverse to my therapist he told me I should watch the movie because it was much better. I've since started looking for a new therapist.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, what thread are you following?

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
http://www.buffyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11280&page=16

The trainwreck I'm watching now. It was interesting for a while, because [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 and someone named KingofCretins kept on saying this is not a good thing with rational explanation and some Bangels still jumping up and down on their beds with joy, and one guy named Chuck2it going off stream-of-consciousness style on the poetry of B/A with references to his 9/11 experience. I didn't follow.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm following that one, too! I just want to hug KingofCretins EVERY TIME HE POSTS. And [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 is knocking it out of the park, too, being awesomely snarky to the Bangels.

YES! There's so much stream-of-consciousness going! Comments where I don't even have any idea what people are saying!

[identity profile] eilowyn.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's kinda fun to follow (and thank God there's no class tomorrow or I'd never get any homework done), but the wank is wanktastic and the brilliant points are expressed brilliantly. I'd say our side is representing itself very well indeed (and I'm now endeared to many Xander fans). It really is fascinating to watch once you get over the sick feeling in the stomach the actual issue created and watch for the sociological aspects on display.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right: there have been some wonderfully eloquent people arguing for us (and yes about the Xander fans, though I don't particularly care for Xander).

It really is fascinating to watch once you get over the sick feeling in the stomach the actual issue created and watch for the sociological aspects on display.

This is very true. It's harder for me to get over that sick feeling, though, because my life has been pretty sucky lately, so I'm depending on fandom in ways I probably shouldn't to make me feel better. *sigh*

As I just said in the BSV forum thread, I think the comics are Joss taking the absolute piss...out of the characters and out of the fans.

For the most part, I try to ignore the comics completely. I don't read them (or any comics, for that matter), so the most I usually do is shake my head at posts on my F'list about the latest madness. I do get quite annoyed, however, when I write a fic and label it Post Chosen or Post NFA and someone pipes up with "I didn't know that happened in the comics" or "but such and such happened in the comics so this can't happen". Grrr!

*sigh* Can't type!

I think the comics are Joss taking the absolute piss...out of the characters and out of the fans. And I find that really horrible. I mean, when Kripke started doing the same thing on Supernatural it was really hilarious. But ridiculously unprofessional and ungrateful.

I can see this being Joss doing that...but I think it's really tacky. And I hope it's not true.

Do people really try to correct you about the comics? That's ridiculous. Keep on writing whatever you want to write! That's what I do!
ext_7165: (Give me strength)

[identity profile] alwaysjbj.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's terribly ungrateful and tacky too, but I think I prefer to think that he is being an ungrateful arse and taking the piss, than that he is SERIOUS. I mean, really!

Oh, believe me, I intend to keep writing what I want to write. I consider myself a BtVS writer first and foremost, and I will happily ignore AtS canon if I so choose--so the comics don't stand a chance. LOL

This is why, when tagging at [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr, I label the seasons as (for instance) B4, B5, B6, B7... and not "B8", but "post-series" and "comics", depending.

[identity profile] crackers4jenn.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, the NOT DEAN icons are amazing. I'm glad we live in a world that will mass protest a fictional character from winning an internet poll in the form of eye-catching graphics. NON-IRONICALLY AND WITHOUT SARCASM DO I MEAN THAT.

I have my OTFSCMW (One True Fandom Steel Cage Match Winner, obviously), and that is a dude, but! It is nice to see more ladies getting recognition.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad we live in that world, too! NO IRONY HERE.

Although your icon is wonderfully ironic, all things considered.

My dream-winner is Buffy or Donna or Aeryn. But! What I really, really want is for a woman to make it to the final four.

Just out of curiosity, who's your OTFSCMW? I will forgive you for the male-ness if he's awesome! (As I assume he is.)

Also: currently watching Community, and I MISSED THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY JOEL MCHALE IS PANTSLESS.
deird1: Fred looking pretty and thoughful (Farscape (Princess Aeryn))

[personal profile] deird1 2010-03-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Aeryn! It must be Aeryn!

*is suddenly passionate about this*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I would not be displeased by that result at all. : )

You should vote! Although I hate that she's up against Donna the very first round, since I love them both sososo much and I'm passionately against the idea of one of them being out after the very first round. *sigh*

...

am I a bad person if I find all the comics stuff terribly amusing?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I could find it amusing, too--I really could--if I didn't see all kinds of people saying that Angel is justified in killing Slayers. And they really believe it. I saw several people approving of the A-bomb dropping in WWII. Seriously. That I can't find amusing.

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, commentary on real-life stuff isn't amusing.

I just don't feel any investment or connection to the comics (cause my canon ends with Chosen, for the most part) so I seem to be one of the few people who really and truly doesn't care what's happening there. I just always find the reaction funny.

I'm right there with you -- I'm finding it all mesmerizing, and needing to back away slowly. I was feeling bad for the bangels until I read the gloaty comments, and now, I'm all like -- DUDE! I suppose the blind spots are all in the eye of the beholder?

OTOH, my son is a big Waverly fan, and I agree with you -- that is all KINDS of wrong!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping that all of these people who are all excited and gloating are just blinded by their own love for the ship and don't really think this is all okay. They're in for a rude awakening (either that or Joss and I look at the world in fundamentally different--and incompatible--ways.

There is an entire page on the TV Tropes Wiki dedicated to all the WHOA TOO MUCH moments between Alex and Justin on the show. It cracks me up to no end.

I've taken to shipping RPF Selena/David with [livejournal.com profile] fishpinknets to avoid shipping incest. The compromises we make!
deird1: Fred looking pretty and thoughful (Default)

[personal profile] deird1 2010-03-05 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hon. STOP.

Go and watch the actual show, instead. Much better.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I really needed that.

And that's good advice. I actually just watched the new episode of Community (which was, as always, GLORIOUS), so I feel a lot better. Plus, Project Runway later tonight, which gives me a chance to watch people stress out over sewing and then lets me yell at the judges when they like the wrong things! It's always exciting!

TV: my anti-drug.

[identity profile] dee81.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Aeryn Sun....LOVE HER!!!!!

(Ahem, sorry. I just get very excited when I meet another fan of Farscape.)

But to continue, I have a huge girl crush on her. I blame the leather and the female power. And John. Yum in his leather pants as well :)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She is made of everything that is awesome. I have a girlcrush on her, too...and I kind of want to marry John Crichton. And his leather pants are definitely invited.

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn your icon!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I love Dean! Even when I shouldn't. Maybe especially when I shouldn't. But I 'll be damned if he takes over everything like he did last year. A WOMAN IS GOING TO MAKE IT TO THE FINAL FOUR. It's going to happen!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year (and the year before) popular-but-really-when-you-think-about-it-douchtastic guys dominated the whooooooole thing. It was depressing. And all the SPN fangirls came out and voted Deandeandeandeandean.

But ever since the (awesome) discussion of women in fandom and the privileging of men's stories this year, we're rallying around the women. Buffy beat Spike! Donna beat the Doctor! Tami beat Tim Riggins! It's all very exciting and affirmative.

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Just in time for Women's History Month, too!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
How appropriate! *fistpump*

My icon is awesomely like yours! But yours has the awesome background, too.

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at what good taste we have ;) The background is less important. What's most important is the gorgeous warrior woman about to ruin someone's day.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Wooord.

I totally voted for Zoe over there. I've become more and more fond of her the more I think about her. I think I need to write some background fic for her. Zoe grows up. Zoe goes to war. Etc. 'Cause she's awesome.

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should do this, as well. And I, I shall read it!

I did write a little piece with Zoe a while ago. It was just a short thing that focused on how Zoe and Wash got together. I've always been fascinated by her reaction to him when she first meets him that we saw in the show, and I went off that. I definitely enjoyed writing her, but I think she would be a bit more of a challenge to write if I didn't have Wash or Mal to play her off of. So I think writing her pre-Firefly would be challenging.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally understand. I've written quite a bit of Zoe-by-extension, since she always ends up being hugely important in my Mal-fics. I do have to wonder how it would be to write her without Wash or Mal....

Stop reading random people's reactions to the new S8 comic.

I've pretty much stuck to the snarky people and [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2's analysis (which, I'll be honest, I thought was snarky until about halfway through). I've already reached my puking quota for the week, so I don't want to risk it...

[identity profile] ohwaluvusbab.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
What the hell is the deal with Buffy/Twilight? I've been on vacation the last few days so have therefore missed the wank.

Dear Lord, I don't think I realised how strongly opposed I was to Buffy and Angel getting together again until I read that forum thread. *vomits everywhere*

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hello you! I should have known that you'd sail in and share my RAGE. It makes me feel better!

[livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 actually has some thoughtful, interesting posts on the whole thing (I like her!). If you want more, though, [livejournal.com profile] su_herald and [livejournal.com profile] petzepellepingo have done pretty good jobs of rounding up links at various places around. Also: for extra RAGE, check out whedonesque!

Dear Lord, I don't think I realised how strongly opposed I was to Buffy and Angel getting together again until I read that forum thread. I know exactly what you mean. This whole things is reminding me of just how much I hate their relationship. Like...I'm trying to look at this from an unbiased, non-shipper position...and I'm failing. *sigh*

[identity profile] ohwaluvusbab.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy anytime to be ragey :)
Though, in truth, I can't actually get very ragey because... laughing. too. hard. I just can't take it seriously, at all. That one poster on the thread waxing poetic about the Transcendent Bangel Love is making my goddam day.

You know what, this latest wank has done something in clarifying my feelings about B/A. I've always been ambivalent, liking/disliking it in equal measure. But now... yeah, no. It's officially ruined for me now. Serious issues aside, I don't know how I'm ever going to re-watch their scenes again and keep a straight face. *shakes head*

The best thing about this whole business is that it makes me proud, not to mention GRATEFUL, to be a B/S shipper. Lord knows we were never *subjected* to such 'transcendent love' ;D (Though, I'm sure we'll get crapped on soon enough.)

Off to read linked posts!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It is funny. It really, really is. Especially because Joss is making fun of Smeyer...while doing the exact same thing! [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 things Bangel is being set up to be subverted; I support this theory.

But now... yeah, no. It's officially ruined for me now. [livejournal.com profile] _jems_ brought up "I Will Remember You" the other day and pointed out to a degree I hadn't really considered just how much Angel makes decisions for Buffy and seems to relish that he can never be with her (that guy is so into self-flagellation), and it made me think about them some more and it was the nail in the coffin (heh) for me.

Serious issues aside, I don't know how I'm ever going to re-watch their scenes again and keep a straight face. *shakes head* Oh, I know!

And YES about being gratefully B/S! I know exactly what you mean!

Do let me know what you think as you read. For some reason, I can't let this go, and your insights are ones I really value (even if they're just along the "hey, this is hilarious" or "Now I'm ragey!" lines!).

[identity profile] ohwaluvusbab.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: The inequality of Buffy and Angel - Yes. I have a lot of appreciation for the B/A romance in S1-3, but after that... Do Not Want. I like their friendshippy scenes (Yoko Factor, Chosen after the kissage), but I have a strong aversion to them in IWRY and Forever, even though they're two episodes I know the Bangel faction use as proof of their true love. (IWRY is just unrelenting cheese. The ice-cream in bed scene? Dear God. I HOPE I never experience such transcendent love. The episode is good only for SMG's fabulous crying. As for Forever, I'm good with them right up until they start making out feet away from Joyce's grave. Classy. /bitch)

And yes, I read 2maggie2's posts about the subversiveness and agree. Actually, her comments about appreciating the complex, interesting Bangel over the schmoopy Bangel is where I stand. So... Maybe they're not totally ruined for me after all. Glad tidings.

And I am finding that thread a very interesting read, even though I have no idea what people are banging on about half the time. It's good to see there appear to be only a couple of lunatics, I guess. I do feel highly sympathetic to the majority of B/A folk - this development is *not of the good*.
