lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([ib] a message for germany)

some things

+ I have decided that there are three elements you can add to any story to automatically improve it: spies, spaceships, and/or apocalypses (bonus points if you add all three!). This insight brought to you by me currently casting my ridiculous kpop band in a spy au.

+ Flipping channels on the radio on the way to work this morning, I stumbled across a station that was playing a game called (yes, really!) SHADES OF BIEBER. Where they made a very reluctant co-host read aloud passages and then had people call in and guess whether they were quotes from 50 Shades of Grey or Justin Bieber songs. I CAN'T. I guess that book really has gone mainstream, which is a terrifying prospect.

+ I am waaaaay behind on Game of Thrones, but I'm enjoying all the badass Sansa graphics that keep popping up on my tumblr dash. For some reason, I can't work up the desire to actually watch the show at the moment? I'll catch up eventually.

+ I am frankly shocked that Cardiff has not burned to the ground after they let Matt Smith carry the Olympic torch. Shocked.

+ I have fallen down the hole into kpop fandom. I apologize, y'all. I'll try to refrain from spamming the heck out of you. But, y'all, I'm pretty sure the second season of Sesame Player is the greatest thing to ever happen to me. Just sayin'.

+ The internet has such a way of making me feel old. Someone posted a mix of songs from 2004 and labeled it as songs from middle school. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that people who were in middle school in 2004 were on the internet. 2004 was the beginning of my senior year of high school. I feel old on tumblr. And then I come over here to lj and I have much older, insanely wonderful friends and perspective is restored.

+ My daddy and I showed my mama and lil sis Inglourious Basterds on Friday night. I was so pleased that they loved it. Favoritest of movies!

+ One of my baby cousins is getting married this weekend, so FAMILY TIME looms. Good thing I like my family. It's gonna be crazy.

+ It is so hot outside, y'all. I refuse to complain because I complain whenever it gets cold and I do definitely prefer hot to cold. But it's really hot. And May.

+ I have been searching for a dress to wear and have come up with nothing. It's amazing to me: I got to the mall and there are thousands and thousands of dresses (malls make me a little ill, between all the people and the consumerism) and there is nothing that I want to buy. The stuff I like looks bad on me. Everything else is ugh. I hate shopping. Hate it.

+ Sunday was Pentecost, and our sermon was amazing and all about the work of the Holy Spirit in restoring the world, and it inspired me to reread some Madeleine L'Engle and dive into her exploration of the idea of the whole world being a sacrament and expect some quotes to pop up here and there. I love it when church moves me so deeply that I cry.

+ What's going on with y'all?

[identity profile] jeymien.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. Now I need to write an Avengers story that incorporates all three. (Black Widow = spy, Thanos = spaceships?, and well, apocalypses... duh!)

That's a pretty neat game. Would've had me ROFLing.. people on the bus definitely would've looked at me weird.

WATCH WATCH WATCH. Oh GoT, the last two episodes were sooooo good.

I love that they did that. I think other Doctors still alive should have their chance too, not just Matt... but it's awesome that he was nominated and got to do it!

Sorry, I don't watch any kpop, a few people on my friends list here do though..

hmm, 2004.. a year before my BA was given to me.. the year I f'd up and hurt my hand and deferred all my second term courses, the year I should've gotten my degree. Also, 4 years after the original should've gotten my degree cause I dropped out in the middle.. and I'm with you, god that makes me feel old. Also, you make me feel old too, so feel young now!

I still haven't seen Inglourious Bastards. One of these days..

Weddings! I love weddings! Mawwiage, oh mawwiage.. shoot sorry, I just went on a movie meltdown with that.. also, sister in law's wedding a month ago drove me batty, I think I'm still there. Have fun!

It's cold here. Rainy. Not sure which I prefer.. why can't it be a nice medium eh?

I'm with you, I hate clothes shopping. I ended up searching websites, found a David's Bridal near me, walked in, got the dress. Also, alterations, but made it much easier than wandering a mall and feeling like I'm gonna cry.

This made me feel a bit bad.. I have been to church in years. Except for weddings and funerals.

I'm going crazy with avengers_land, working and being generally Avengers dorky :)

I still haven't seen Inglourious Bastards. One of these days

I love it SO MUCH.

but made it much easier than wandering a mall and feeling like I'm gonna cry.

That's a good plan!

Don't feel bad! I just really love church!

[identity profile] jeymien.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I do definitely prefer the online shopping at David's Bridal.I think you can check if a nearby store has it in stock too. Only problem is they're really sticky on alterations, so you want to make sure they have your size, The one near me was annoyed with me buying my dress a month ahead when I needed alterations!

All these years of watching American tv shows and I still don't get your school system :P Middle school is like...11-13 ish? Is that right? 'Cause then it fits for me, I was 13 in 2004. :)

This last episode of GoT was SO GOOD, especially for badass Sansa stuff ;). The previous ones, not so much :/

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, thereabouts. :D And I know that doesn't make me that much older than you--I was 17, which is only four years. But when you talk about it in terms of schooling, it just seems like this big gaping chasm, I don't know.

especially for badass Sansa stuff

I am so looking forward to that!

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Fall of 2004 was the beginning of seventh grade for me! THERE, FIXED THAT FOR YOU, WELCOME BACK TO FEELING OLD ON LJ TOO.

I have fallen down the hole into kpop fandom. I apologize, y'all.
omgggg, I know, right? A few weeks ago my life suddenly turned into a "I fell into SNSD and I can't get up" situation and that still has not changed at all. I actually just went and found a million icons I intend to add sometime soon - no time at the moment, as the serious business of selecting icon keywords is serious and right now I have a paper + journal to write six hours before they are both due, but I did add this one of Yoona just so I could comment on this entry appropriately. You are welcome for that, too. (faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!!!!!11!)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
YOOOOOONA!

I just love her so much. I know nothing about SNSD except that they are the BIG THING, but I love her in Love Rain to the point of distraction.

You should get me into SNSD! I think what got me into Infinite so much was that I found the world's best pimp post with all of these links and breakdown of the boys' personalities, etc. And SNSD is so huge, and I'd love to know more about them, but I need a kind of SNSD for Dummies thing. Got any links for me? I will join you there!

[eta] I mean, obviously not now. But when you have free time. Good luck on getting your stuff done.

And also: WAY TO MAKE ME FEEL OLD AGAIN.

Popping back in quickly because HAHAHAHAHA I WAS HOPING YOU COULD ASK ME THIS SO I COULD LINK TO THIS POST. It is a totally awesome primer about all of the girls and how they are each AMAZING. I got the majority of my information from there so idk if it would be more or less accurate compared to anything else (I don't know of any other similarly comprehensive SNSD breakdowns, so), but based on the comments and all it seems pretty excellent/approval-worthy!

ENJOY.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OH YAY! I cannot tell you how much I was hoping that you'd having something like that to share. I'M SO EXCIIIITED!

Have you read any of that 50 Shades of Grey review blog?

2004 was the beginning of my senior year of high school.

2004 was the beginning of my senior year of college.

I've read the first few chapters! Enjoying it immensely while vomiting, lbr.

Yay for perspective! That's what I like about lj--I have people of all ages on my flist. Unlike tumblr which mostly feels like the domain of teenagers
ext_407741: (the pack survives)

[identity profile] redsilverchains.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
- I am not sure if that game sounds hilarious or terrifying. Gawwwwd, Fifty Shades of Gray. Every time I read a quote, I feel like hunting down plot-what-plot fanfic by people who actually know how to write things of the sort. Just to cleanse my brain. And I am not usually a PWP person!

- A-hem. So what were you saying before about never having had a boyband phase? ;)

- I hear you on the age thing. Last night, I found myself giving someone on Tumblr a “what fangirling was like when we only had TV and VHS rentals” primer. And they were boggled by the prospect of having to wait for a movie to be on HBO/Cinemax (what is a Youtube, what is a torrent) or for a music video to be on MTV. Boggled.

Also, I was curiously checking out the average age of people who were reblogging one of my Skins graphics and one of them was THIRTEEN. I felt like being a scolding old lady: “what were you even doing, watching a show like this?! You fetus!”

The 90’s will always be less than ten years ago.Yep.

-Yay, Madeleine L’Engle! I already loved her for her fiction, but reading Walking on Water was like finding a soulmate or something.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
+ I am never a PWP person, but I've spent the last few weeks getting really angry at how popular these horrible books are when THERE IS SO MUCH BETTER PORN FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET.

+ SEE I KNOW. I'm actually working on an "I suddenly have feelings about kpop" post, and I totally address the fact that I never had a boyband phase but now I am having one and it is very strange? It is so strange. I cannot explain it. This is also my first fandom, I think, without any ladies. I'm almost always in fandom for the ladies (or at least equally between the genders) so I'm kind of confused as to what to do with myself.

+ “what fangirling was like when we only had TV and VHS rentals” primer. And they were boggled by the prospect of having to wait for a movie to be on HBO/Cinemax (what is a Youtube, what is a torrent) or for a music video to be on MTV. Boggled.

Oh, children.

I felt like being a scolding old lady: “what were you even doing, watching a show like this?! You fetus!”

I WOULD TOTALLY HAVE REACTED LIKE THAT. SERIOUSLY.

Yes, it's always 2000 in my head, so 1994 was 6 years ago.

+ but reading Walking on Water was like finding a soulmate or something

I like her fiction, but it's her non-fiction that made me fall totally in love with her. And WoW is my all-time favorite.

[identity profile] smells_corrupt.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Spies make everything better. This is fact.

Shades of Grey. I feel your pain. *hangs head in dismay at everything involving that book and it's reception*

I am frankly shocked that Cardiff has not burned to the ground after they let Matt Smith carry the Olympic torch. Shocked. Because it is shocking.

Lol, I downloaded that Middle school mix. Because I started 7th grade in 2004 :D

Heat. Gah. I'm currently in the Pacific NW, but I'm going home to the South for summer break in a couple weeks. I don't really mind the heat, but transitioning from low-sixties temps to triple digit temps is akin to getting slammed by a freight train of heat followed by an Mack truck of humidity....

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Spies make everything better. This is fact

It should be one of the laws of physics.

Because I started 7th grade in 2004 :D

And tumblr is just full of y'all! I'm an old lady there!

It's the humidity, isn't it? Last night I went walking at about 8 or so, and technically the temperature was 79, but it so didn't feel like it.

[identity profile] smells_corrupt.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr constantly reinforces the fact that I am about 87 years old in terms of computer skills. I only figured out how to italicize things in comments using < i > / < / i > about two months ago. And for a recent class project we had to use illustrator to make posters and I was just sitting there all, "but why can't I just cut things out and glue them on poster board? I'm good at that."

The humidity! The heat index! The idea of a summer that doesn't make drowning by breathing seem like a plausible scenario is a completely alien concept to me.

[identity profile] spunspider.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
goodness, one of your posts is like falling down a well in a velcro-suit with lots of velco-friendly things on the walls and smashing against the entire perimeter on your way down (i totally would, also this analogy; my mother famously fell down a well when she was younger. although she wasn't wearing a velcro suit... wow this got away from me).

snsd! are my life and taeyeon is my universe and when you have picked up things COME TALK TO ME ABOUT THEM THEY ARE MY OCCUPATION. they are humongous and they've been around for a while and i bet they feel overwhelming to get into but it is so worth it. imo the reason they have managed to become this successful, the reason they have such appeal is a) they are both extraordinary and totally average, b) they are so much fun, together and individually, and c) they're so grounded, i'm repeatedly astonished by them. i started off in kpop solely with boy groups and i love them but with snsd it's different bc i don't just adore them as idols, they're like friends, women i would love to know irl, women am so proud of.

i first started feeling old on the internet when i started writing 'age: 20' on friending memes. ;\ i just turned 23 and this weird thing happened where i felt like i jumped back into youth again lol idek but i can go with it! tumblr is crazy though. what bothers me actually is not how young people are but when people a few years younger than me seem so much more knowledgeable and articulate than me. then i'm like :( what have i been doing.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I'm going to take that as a compliment! And what a story about your mother down the well! That could have been disasterous!

I'm super excited about getting into SNSD! I am a little overwhelmed, but I think it'll be worth it. Is there a specific variety show I should watch that will help me ~get~ them? Because I watched Sesame Player and felt like it helped me get Infinite, and if I could find something similar for SNSD, I feel liek that would be hugely helpful.

but when people a few years younger than me seem so much more knowledgeable and articulate than me. then i'm like :( what have i been doing.

I know! I'm only 25, but I feel like these people are just winning at life and I'm letting it slip by.

[identity profile] spunspider.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
indeed! there wasn't much water in there, luckily, but it's pretty much mum's defining story.

WELP ok they've racked up quite a bit by now. i suggest watching an snsd ep of something or other to get to know how they work together; i was going to suggest the haha mong show but i can't find it on yt anymore ;\ sadly soshified makes you do the 50 posts thing to download subbed vids. it's on dailymotion here – yoona is a fucking riot here.

also radio appearances are GREAT – they do things like this (yooona with the hair, taeyeon next to her) – the full thing is here and it's hilarious, they just descend into chaos istg.

something very recent is star life theater – even i'm behind on this!

one of the easiest things you can do is youtube 'snsd hello baby cuts' – that was a variety show a few years back, where ostensibly they were taking care of a baby but it quickly devolved into 'snsd dicking around and being stupid'.

also bc there're so many of them you can pick on a member you want to stalk and then there're things you can watch for particular members, so ping me when that happens! i'm guessing you'd start with yoona; there's lots of little clips you can watch like this (full show is sweet night!)

have fun!

2004 I turned 36, so everyone on everything makes me feel really old!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is really why I like lj so much--it's so much more of a cross-section. It's mostly ladies (I only have a few guys on my flist), but I have people all over the age spectrum to interact with. It's lovely!

[identity profile] mollivanders.livejournal.com 2012-06-02 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think adding those three elements to any story IS the magic ingredient. I would like to see them all together ;)

DUDE. When I was out in CA one of my friends mentioned his roommate (a girl) is obsessed with 50 Shades and I actually felt my heart shrivel up and I wanted to cry, so I made him change the topic. BUT SERIOUSLY :( :( :(

Dude, 2004 was the year I graduated from high school. Who are these middle schoolers on the internet?

[identity profile] zombie_boogie.livejournal.com 2012-06-03 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
2004 was the beginning of my senior year of high school.

IN 2004 I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY. The internet, especially Tumblr, always makes me feel like an octogenarian. Like, recently people talked about not being old enough to see Titanic in the theatre the first time! Or watch BtVS or The X-Files live on TV when they originally aired! Whaaaaaaat. And fairly soon people born in the 2000s will active in internet fandom and I can't deal with it. GET OFF MY LAWN.

I both love and hate shopping. I love shopping because I love clothes. I hate shopping because clothing manufacturers have a very narrow definition of the female form. I usually do a lot of online research before I venture out to a physical store.
