Here is an excellent and fair article about Southern stereotypes being perpetuated by the media and how much damage they're doing. It's written by a Southerner! And it makes a Designing Women reference! All in all: awesome.

It's truly astounding to see some of the common misconceptions that are still so rampant in other parts of the country. I consistently run into people who are surprised to learn where I'm from. Often because I "speak so well" or I'm "really intelligent." And then I promptly scold them.
