in other not-stupid articles news...

Here is an excellent and fair article about Southern stereotypes being perpetuated by the media and how much damage they're doing. It's written by a Southerner! And it makes a Designing Women reference! All in all: awesome.

That's a good article.

Dallas County voted for Obama in 2008 57-42. There be liberals down here. And a lot more nuance than people tend to give it credit for. It's easy to think the South is full of idiots when the media cherry-picks the biggest idiots to showcase.

Also, YAY for being in a state that can rape me if I go in for an abortion! *throws confetti*

I WANT TO MARRY THIS ARTICLE AND HAVE IT'S INTELLIGENT SOUTHERN BABIES. *ahem*

But yeah, it was lovely :D I grew up in the South and have since migrated to the Pacific NW for school. It's truly astounding to see some of the common misconceptions that are still so rampant in other parts of the country. I consistently run into people who are surprised to learn where I'm from. Often because I "speak so well" or I'm "really intelligent." And then I promptly scold them.

I thought it was pretty fair in saying, "There are differences, but they aren't universal and it isn't useful to play them up."

I'm pretty sure Nashville did, too.

Yeah, whenever there's a natural disaster down here or a big political moment, they always seek out the people with the fewest teeth and the thickest accents. The media seems to enjoy playing up the stereotypes.

Boo to them and good for you!
