lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([dh] we'll look for each other)

Hmmmm...

I don't know.  Revelations and shocks and developments, but I think I'm going to have to watch this episode a few more times to really decide about how I feel.

Turns out all that speculation on Dr. Saunder's background was right!  Congrats, those of you who called it (and those of you who, like me, jumped on the bandwagon as soon as you heard it.  Dr. Saunders/Whiskey--really really fascinating.  I loved the bit at the end where she told Topher that she knew who she was and then gave Victor a lollipop.

VICTOR!  POOR BABY!  He's so concerned about not being his best!  It broke my heart!  I want him to own the second season if we get one.

Again we have Joss's obsession with souls.  And that you can't erase them.

Mark Sheppard was woefully underused this episode.  However, his fake American accent is pretty bad, which I find endearing.

Not enough Sierra.  Moving on.

Paul Ballard.  Wow.  You managed to make me hate you more and make me like you, all at once.  The working for the Dollhouse thing?  Baaaad.  The setting Madeleine/November/Mellie free instead of Echo?  Good for you, Paul Ballard.  Good for you.  Although I do admit I got a kick out of watching him and Boyd work side by side in this one.

I'm confused about Echo/Caroline.  Was that her personality coming through in Omega?  Because it sure seemed like it.

Topher had some great lines, especially the one about the tall morally judgmental man who shouldn't be in his office (except for Boyd).  Also, I'm just as intrigued as Dr. Saunders as to why he would make her hate him.  Veeery interesting.

And what can I say about Alan Tudyk?  A GOD AMONG MEN.  He's just too good.  I'm still coming to terms with Alpha's past, but it's intriguing.  What I want to know is what was his connection with Dominic?  And if he called himself Alpha before he became a doll, then is that where the call sign system came from?  I need more information.

The one real conclusion that I came to is that they tried to do too much in this last episode.  Cramming too many revelations in there.  They needed more time.  I really, really hope they get it.

As for themes and whether or not this all made sense or was satisfactory or whatever, I really am going to need to watch it again.  Won't be tomorrow cuz, hey!  Graduation!  But soon.  I'm very, very interested in hearing y'all's thoughts.
FOX, IF YOU CANCEL THIS SHOW I WILL NEVER, EVER FORGIVE YOU!  AND I WILL NEVER GIVE YOU ANOTHER CHANCE!

Hee, my most coherent thought is PLEASE DON'T GET CANCELLED! I will be so sad if that's the last we see of the Dollhouse.

Congratulations on your graduation!

It really did end up sucking me in far more than I would have thought during those first few episodes. And there's so much more to be explored, questions that still need to be answered (like, for instance, who was sending Ballard the messages via Echo? Why did Alpha need Ballard to get into the Dollhouse? etc.) that I'll be pretty crushed.

I love how flirty those two look in your icon. It's very cute.

Oh! And thank you very much! The cuteness distracted me. I almost forgot to say it.

I heard there was a lot more Sierra/November, but it got cut due to time. *sigh*

I love Saunders learning that she's programmed. I wonder if she's going to try to fight it all or try to remake it somehow - i.e., she's programmed to hate Topher, so she might want to fight that, but on the other hand she doesn't really have a lot of reasons to like him right now either, so how would that show up as part of her conflict?

The Caroline/Echo conversation was so wonderful and yet SO CONFUSING. So...Omega!Echo is not Caroline? But she kind of is? But she's not? Is this what would happen if you take your personality out of your body and your body goes "...okay, so...now what?"

Mark Sheppard's fake accent is terrible. I love it. Every time he talks I'm all, "wait, so...is he trying to reject the Cockney? OH THAT'S SO CUTE."

Loveloveloved Topher's lines, especially the tall morally judgmental man in his office (apart from Boyd). Hee. And it is some verrry nice stuff about him making Saunders hate him. Seems sort of like salting his wounds, since he only gets one friend a year anyway.

UGH I DON'T WANT THIS SHOW TO GO AWAY. MORE MORE.

I loved the whole Omega!Echo thing. The way I understood it was the line "I have 38 personalities that I can slip into. Actually they slip into me. But somehow I know....That none of them are ME."

Because she's hollowed out she is her essence. Alpha's essence is cutting people up. Echo's essence is searching for herself. Like Echo!Omega told Alpha: 38 personalities = nobody.

....Or at least that's how I understood it lol.

I was most curious about Madeline. How is being "asleep' for five years help her deal with her daughter's death? Oh god, did they erase her memory of her daughter as part of her contract? I did love that Paul saved her. Makes more sense. I think Paul knows that saving Caroline is his fantasy, but he actually did care for Mellie/November. Him picking her shows a lot of character development.

I absolutely agree that Topher programmed Whiskey to hate him to kill his guilt.

(I also have a pet theory that the girl Susan from "Briar Rose" might be his daughter. I know it sounds out there, but how else would he know about her? Does he spend his free time volunteering with foster children? I really doubt it. Helping her - or killing his guilt- by hiding behind his technology is so in character.)

Wow. That was a rant....

Hee. I like the essence idea, because it fits that whole 'can you wipe away a soul' thing, but I also...kind of really dislike it at the same time, because it feels too some-people-are-just-born-bad-or-good and that feels really....simplified. And it contradicts a lot of what we've seen so far and BLAUGH I have no idea. Oh, show.

Madeleine Costley is an interesting lady, oh yes. I hope we get to see her again sometime, even just for an episode. I'm curious about how it would help her with her daughter's death too - the idea that they'd erase it for her is really, really creepy and awesome. Most of the Dolls we've seen are there because they were sold or to get away from crime/trouble with The Law and whatnot, but the idea that someone would sign away five years just for the Dollhouse to take away a specific memory is really interesting. Eeeeeee. *season two excitement*

I cannot wait for the Topher/Claire arc next season. I think that a Doll being in an imprinted personality and aware that they're a functioning human with a personality, but their entire life is basically a construct - that opens up awesome questions. I hope they look at that a lot; I like Echo, but Whiskey's arc seems more interesting that Echo's just piecing together things from bits of retained memory.

(Ooooh. That would definitely explain a lot - the Dollhouse doesn't seem all that altruistic as a business, but I could definitely see Topher doing something like that.)

Heh! Rants are all good fun. ^_^

I think that was the point of Susan's character in Briar Rose. Both Susan and Alpha have a thing for knives because they makes them "feel safe." The point of Susan's story was that she could grow into a strong, kind woman. Alpha (gr...I forgot his real name, I know there were 3 lol) was already an adult who committed a crime when he was wiped.

" ...but the idea that someone would sign away five years just for the Dollhouse to take away a specific memory is really interesting. "

I thought Caroline wanted her memory wiped of how her boyfriend died.

"I cannot wait for the Topher/Claire arc next season."

Me too! I'm psyched for next season!

"(Ooooh. That would definitely explain a lot - the Dollhouse doesn't seem all that altruistic as a business, but I could definitely see Topher doing something like that.)"

Ever since Topher made a comment in the episode Echoes about how people's biology reacts differently to chemicals like drugs and how if he tried heroin once he would be a complete junkie, I thought Topher either was a junkie or had a junkie as a parent. But Topher seems too nerdy to be into drugs....hm...

Rants are fun! ;-)

Ohh, I hadn't thought of Susan being sort of an alternate-Alpha! That helps me reconcile it a bit in my head, then. Cool.

I thought Caroline wanted her memory wiped of how her boyfriend died.
Was it that? I thought she was escaping all the huge legal trouble that would've put her in prison...her boyfriend dying could definitely be a factor, though.

TOPHER/CLAIRE. GAH. I don't 'ship them as hard as Victor/Sierra yet, but there's so much room for fascinating things to develop in s2. *excitement*

I figured Topher has definitely used drugs at some point, but somehow I don't think he was ever a junkie. He seems like he'd go for the mind-altering stuff, but he's also cocky-genius enough to be smart about it, you know? Like he'd do it for fun, but wouldn't let himself get too far gone.

Stupid "due to time"! I love Sierra and November! And I love your fangirl!Sierra icon!

Yeah, there are so many fun things they can do with Saunders. I really hope they go there if we get another season.

So...Omega!Echo is not Caroline? But she kind of is? But she's not? Is this what would happen if you take your personality out of your body and your body goes "...okay, so...now what?" It was crazy cool but it made me scream at the potential that will probably be unrealized. I mean, do you have any conception of how many cool things they could do with that (of course you do)? And FOX is almost surely going to cancel it.

Every time he talks I'm all, "wait, so...is he trying to reject the Cockney? OH THAT'S SO CUTE." I KNOW! He's become one of my favorite character actors; I flail whenever I see him. I really hope Joss uses him more--again, if we get another season.

I will echo your plea of MORE MORE.
