This is for the benefit of the two people on my flist who I know watch Being Erica. And whoever else I don't know watches it but does. (How's that for some awkward syntax?)
But I'm putting it behind the cut for spoilers because YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH THIS SHOW.*
So I just watched the one where her sister gets married and OMG I NEVER SAW THAT COMING.
I hadn't realized how used to cliched writing I am until this episode. But seriously: there are ways that things go on TV, especially on sitcoms, and the fact that this episode didn't go that way at all shook me. Like, I don't know what to do with myself.
I'm watch it and Erica goes back in time and finds out the truth about Josh and then she comes back and the wedding's still on. At this point, there were two options.
A. Erica would find out that Dr. Tom was right and that when Sam and Josh broke up, Josh realized he was in love with her and now they're really happy to get married.
B. Erica would make her speech about how Josh doesn't make Sam happy and Sam would realize she was right and then the wedding wouldn't happen.
Those are the only two options, because those are the only two scenarios that fall under The Way Things Happen in Television.
When option A was off the table, I assumed it would be option B.
BUT NO. Seriously, Sam getting married anyway and then telling Erica she never wanted to talk to her again? I didn't see that coming, not in a million years. It defies every cliche ever and says that things don't always turn out the way you should, and you just don't see that in television in general, much less in sitcoms.
"Hell's Bells" was a total cliche, and I definitely saw Xander leaving Anya at the altar from a mile off. I'm still bitter about the cliched handling of that episode--how many thousands of times have we seen the wedding called off at the last minute? I want to send this episode to Joss and say, "This is how you shock people."
I was already really enjoying this show already and relating to Erica in ways that are a little uncomfortable, but I think this is the episode that seals the deal for me. I love this show. And I love it for being as ballsy as it is. Wow. Well played, show.
