Some flail to go along with last night's fail....
+ Well, the job search is equal parts terrifying and monotonous, so let's talk about happier things, okay?
+ Like the fact that on Saturday I finally got to see Stark Trek.
In the interest of full disclosure, if I'm a Trek fan, it's of Next Generation (Jean Luc Picard > Kirk, yes indeedy). Most of my experience with the original cast is in the movies (don't ever watch the one with the whales and the mom from Seventh Heaven. There is no way to take it seriously). So I wasn't too worried about the new film.
And I liked it. A lot.
First off, the casting director should be given a gazillion Oscars (seriously, why is there no casting Oscar? It ticks me off!). And like everyone else I think it was brilliant to do the whole alternate universe thing. That way, you can have your fun without messing up canon. Smart move, J.J. You might get me to actually like you yet.
Now for the squeeing/capslock/shallowness, kay?
CHEKHOV IS THE MOST ADORABLE THING THAT EVER ADORABLED. SO CUTE. I guess I'm going in for the jailbait now. But his accent was a bit distracting until I watched an interview with him where he decided to play it as a Cold War-era Soviet stereotype, at which point it became a stroke of genius. WHEN HE WENT RUNNING THROUGH THE SHIP SAYING, "I CAN DO THAT" I WANTED TO DIE FROM SHEER CUTENESS. Ooooooh, cute little boy.
I never liked Kirk before. I appreciate Shatner as the pop culture icon that he is, and I enjoy him in a very, very campy, over-the-top sort of way, but I never liked Kirk. But oh, Chris Pine, you made me like him. Also, he is so not the type of guy I usually find attractive at all, but he totally won me over. I have no problem with saying that he's my favorite Kirk.
Quinto, on the other hand, was servicable. I have no real complaints. But he's never going to be Spock to me. NIMOY IS SPOCK, okay? And I knew he was going to show up, but when he did, I still went all flaily. ALSO: JO MARCH IS SPOCK'S MAMA? WTF? Oh, the crack fic potential. And I didn't realize that was Ben Cross playing his dad until we got to the credits and then I felt very silly, because obviously it was Ben Cross. Who else would it be?
Uhura. Zoe was fierce, y'all. And gorgeous. I loved her at the beginning. But I was kind of sad at the end because by the time they got on the ship, she didn't have anything to do but be the love interest. And she is worth so much more than that. Also, I was all set to ship her with Spock...and then I didn't. Probably because there was nothing behind their relationship: all of a sudden she's just kissing him and we have no background at all? Her hooking up with Kirk would make tons more sense since there's actually a little bit of background there. But really, I just want her to be awesome all on her own, and she didn't get a chance to.
That, I think, has a lot to do with the fact that she just didn't have a ton of screentime. As a matter of fact, beside Kirk and Spock the only person I thought got as much as he should have was Bones. And Karl Urban was awesome. Really, I adored him. Except for the fact that I had no clue what kind of accent he was trying to have. But I often find that endearing (Mark Sheppard on Dollhouse? Dexter Fletcher on Press Gang? Oh. Yes.), and I did here. He was pretty fabulous, and I loved his interactions with Kirk.
NOT ENOUGH SIMON PEGG. Repeat it with me: NOT ENOUGH SIMON PEGG. Well, we all know you can never have enough Simon Pegg. And when he was there, he was awesome beyond all reason. So more Scotty next time, y/y?
Not enough Sulu, either, though he did get that awesome ass-kicking moment plus that great reference to TOS with the fencing bit. I really liked Cho in this part. The only thing was, I totally agree with my daddy: "I miss the voice."
So have some George Takei being awesome, y'all! My gift to you!
Back to the movie.
Uh, I seriously thought that guy playing George Kirk was Chris Pine. Until the credits. Yet another reason to give the casting director an Oscar! (Seriously, Academy! Invent a new category just for this woman!)
Tons of really, really funny moments. (I especially liked the bit about Scotty and Captain Archer's dog, and I never even watched Enterprise.) Maybe a bit too much action for my taste--and I say that because, like I mentioned, I felt a few of the characters were underused, and I would have liked to have seen more of them. Also, Kirk was always sporting new bruises and getting his ass kicked, which was pretty hilarious.
DID I MENTION THAT CHEKHOV IS ADORABLE????? HE CAN MISPRONOUNCE THE LETTER V FOR ME ANY DAY.
Yeah. So...there's that.
+ I'm also watching Farscape now, and of course I love it. And yes, yes, I have already developed a massive crush on Ben Browder and I think Claudia Black is awesome. Are we surprised? Not at all.
+ For those of you who love Tarsem Singh's The Fall as much as I do (and for those of you who haven't seen it, I am demanding that you rush to do so right. now. Check out my icon! It's Lee Pace! Everybody loves Lee Pace! Plus an adorable little girl! And the--bar none--most gorgeous movie ever made! And it's an examination of the nature of film and the power of storytelling! You can't go wrong!), you'll be thrilled to see that he's about to start a new movie called War of Gods, which stars Henry Cavill (hello, Albert!) as Theseus fighting the Titans! If you've seen The Fall, you'll understand when I say that THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS IN THE WORLD.
+ Working on my
good__evil challenge entries. The gorgeous art really is inspiring; I really hope I can come up with something worthy of it.
+ For those of you still caught up finals and stuff, good luck!
