a very important announcement

Listen, British people, I love you. You make great TV and pretty much invented the novel and I just think you're fantastic all around, except for the whole imperialism thing, which is mercifully mostly behind you. But do not go trying to tell me that Lay's and Walkers are the same. They aren't. They may be owned by the same company, but either the ingredients are different or the way they make them is different, because I am a Lay's connoisseur and let me tell you: they taste different. And Walkers are just not as good. Sorry, but it's true.

Signed,

someone who ate a whole whole lot of Walkers while she was studying in London and who lamented the fact that they weren't Lay's with every single bite

Too true!

Thank you! A friend was insisting that they were the same thing, and I was growing quite indignant!

You studied in London? omg /jealous

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
For two and a half months! I loved it!

[identity profile] mollivanders.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Very true!

(Though I would not be surprised if they were completely different ingredients.)

I mean something along the lines of the potatoes are a slightly different variety or it's a different kind of oil, that sort of thing. Basic potato chips are pretty much made mostly the same way across the board, but they can vary widely from company to company.

I'M CURIOUS HOW YOU WOULD RATE CZECH BOHEMIA CHIPS, WHICH I PERSONALLY PREFER OVER LAY'S.

(wah good thing i bought potato chips today, otherwise this post would've made me desperate.)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I WOULD LOVE TO TRY THEM. I love classic potato chips so deeply it's ridiculous.

[identity profile] indiesnopp.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
ALSO! American Lays tastes TOTALLY DIFFERENT from Danish Lays! (The danish are better sorry. But American stuff has this kunda...chemical? taste)

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I WOULD LOVE TO TRY THE DANISH ONES. Seriously, I will try anyone's potato chips anytime any where.

I dislike sweets but I can devour a whole bag of crisps srsly

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm picky about sweets, but salty foods are my FAVORITE. Chips, french fries, popcorn--I lovelovelove salty foods.

But our chocolate is better.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed--European chocolate is much better.

Megacorps always adapt recipes to what they perceive as local taste. Hence the abominations that are US versions of some Cadbury products. I would assume fat, salt and flavouring balance would be quite different.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I know that a lot of US products use a lot less sugar in other countries that aren't used to using as much as we do.

[identity profile] fenchurche.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid I like Walker's better... but only because they seem to come up with some really fun flavor combinations. Of course, in the US we're finally starting to catch on to that trend and mix up potato chip flavors a bit. But the best crisps I ever had were the Walker's Moroccan Lamb and Spices ones we got when we were on vacation in the UK.

See, I'm a classic girl myself. I think regular plain crispy potato chips cannot be improved upon. I will eat the BBQ flavor and I like them, but I don't need the fancy flavors. But if you're super into flavors, yeah, they definitely have way more crazy ones in Europe!

Now I want some potato chips. I'll have to raid the mister's snack cache.

Score! Three big bags of Lay's to choose from.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, how convenient for you!

[identity profile] brutti-ma-buoni.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Walkers smokey bacon crisps are the best food in the world. End of. Our friendship is in *tatters*, I say.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, as long as you don't claim that they're the same as Lay's, I can live with you thinking they're better. Even if you're clearly wrong.

[identity profile] streussal.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As a Canadian, this reminds me of back bacon. And how Americans have this thing called "Canadian bacon" that is like a lower level knock off back bacon. And just definitely not Canadian.

Also how Smarties (by Nestle) are far superior to M&Ms don't try to tell me they're similar

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-13 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have frequently heard that "Canadian" bacon isn't at all what y'all enjoy, and I am not all that impressed with it myself.

I assumed back bacon was like fatback, but it seems it's slightly different. I haven't liked the bacon I've had in Europe--it was limp and soft, not crispy like I like my bacon. Is your back back soft or crispy?

Your Smarties are definitely better than ours--ours are pretty much flavored chalk!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know what those are!

[identity profile] une-jonquille.livejournal.com 2014-05-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Quavers! Like the love child of a potato chip and a Cheeto.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2014-05-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd try it!
