Just what I need—another fandom.

Thanks to [profile] ava_leigh_fitz , I now have a new obsession.

Supernatural.

People whose fanfiction I adore have been cranking out a lot of Supernatural stuff lately, which I couldn’t read because I hadn’t seen a single episode of the show.  I remember when they were showing the teasers before the show started—the end of the pilot with the blood dripping on Jared Padalecki’s head.  Since I wasn’t that big of a fan of his on “Gilmore Girls” (I’m a Jess girl; so sue me), I decided the show probably wasn’t worth watching.  Besides, I hate horror.  Suspense, I adore—I will watch anything Hitchcock, although I love his more subtle stuff—from “Rebecca” through “Rear Window” and “Rope” through “Marnie”—as opposed to his darker stuff—“Psycho” and “The Birds.”  But so many people seemed to love this show that I decided that sooner or later, I’d check it out.

Here’s where [profile] ava_leigh_fitz comes in.  She mentioned a site where I could find links to episodes online.  I told her that I was taking a class and working right now, so it might be a while before I got around to watching them.

Oh, y’all.  I should have known that I didn’t have the self control not to watch them.  If they’re right there, I’m going to give in.

I started on Sunday afternoon.  I’m already three episodes into Season 2, which is just pathetic.  This is even worse than watching the first two seasons of “Veronica Mars” during exams.

But at least I’m still caught up with all my reading for class.  And I’ve got an A in there right now.  And I’m working quite a bit.  I don’t know how I’m doing all this.

But here’s the kicker.

The class I’m taking?  British Gothic fiction.  “The Monk” and “Dracula” and “The Turn of the Screw”…this is what I’m reading right now.  Needless to say, I’ve been a bit jumpy lately.  I have a fairly low tolerance for “scariness,” just because I never watch/read scary stuff.  The combination of all these books plus my “Supernatural” marathon is resulting in the fraying of my delicate nerves.  The other night I thought about going and sleeping in my little sister's room—I’m home for the summer—like we used to do when we were little and got scared.  She probably would have yelled at me (she doesn’t like to be woken up, and neither do I, for that matter), so I’m glad I didn’t, but the temptation was there.

That’s silly, of course.  At any rate, the show is wonderful.  Even aside from the fact that it’s all two insanely hot guys running around and kicking demon ass and such, it’s actually a good show on its own, because it’s about something.  Just like Joss Whedon’s shows are about building community and making sacrifices (at least, that’s what I assume “Buffy” is about, too—I haven’t ever seen it because I refuse to watch shows unless I can watch them from the beginning and seven seasons is a lot to get into.  But I desperately want to watch it!), this show is about family.  Really.  I’m not lying.  It totally is.  About a family that would do anything for each other and has to make hard decisions every day.  I love it.

Oh, and mark down Dean Winchester on my TV boyfriends list, right below Logan Echolls and Malcolm Reynolds and above Steven Hyde.

I was sort of just okay with season one, but season two gets better with every episode. It's one of my favourite shows now, which I never would have predicted even at the end of season one.

I'm so glad to hear you say that! So far, this isn't one of my favorite shows EVER (like Veronica Mars was from the second or third episode), but I'm enjoying it, and I think it has a ton of potential. Besides, it's still *on*, which is more than I can say for most of my favorite shows that have a habit of either getting canceled or just jumping the shark and turning out to be horrible.

Malcolm Reynolds? You like firefly? That is so cool I recently spent an entire week watching it over and over again. Now, I am Wash-girl myslef but I am excited to find out that people still watch Firefly.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Firefly. I've very rarely been so emotionally satisfied by a show (since the Big Damn Movie came out, at least). I adore Wash, too--he's definitely my second favorite of the guys, and Alan Tudyk totally deserves to get more work.

[identity profile] granola-bean.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Again with the beautiful icons. I think I going have to see a Knight's Tale again, just because of Tudyk. For the girls i love kalee, there is such an innocence to her and she is jsut a real woman of a girl (if that makes any sense)

To think I only befirended who originally because of Always on checkmated and now I realize with have such similar tastes.

Yeah, I love that icon. And he is totally the best thing about A Knight's Tale--well, him and Paul Bettany, who's glorious.

Over time, I've become a big Zoe fan--she kicks ass, but she's gorgeous and has a wonderful marriage and is the definition of loyalty. But Kaylee's a sweetie, and I have a soft spot for Inara and for River, of course...I just love all the characters on that show!

Well, I'm glad you did friend me--we do have quite a bit in common!

[identity profile] granola-bean.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
SQUEE for Paul Bettany. He is just so pretty. Yes I agree with the Zoe thing. She is so amazinfg as both an individual and as a wife and that is really remarkable. I never scene a TV show with a charcter like her. WHo was so independent and yet so stable to be in a committed marriage.

*giggles* My work is done. I'm not a fan of the scary either but this, I love. It could be the fact that Dean is there all hot and protective, but yeah. Though I have to say 'Bloody Mary' freaked me out since I've always hated that urban legend. This show is so about family, there is no doubt. And you're right, Buffy was also about that.

And also, no freakin' way. My synoptic paper this year is on the Gothic tradition. We're doing Frankenstein at the moment, then I'll probably do some Poe and then maye 'The Monk' or 'The Castle of Otranto'.

And Dean's on my list. as are Logan and Mal. And I totally did the same with the last two seasons of VM.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, hot and protective Dean is probably my dream come true. I like how he acts like he's all rebellious, but he's really a softie when it comes to his family. Yeah, a few of the episodes I found really freaky, and I've always hated the "Bloody Mary" legend, too.

That's so funny! I never thought I'd really get into the Gothic, but I'm enjoying it, although that might have a lot to do with the teacher. Frankenstein was completely different than I expected, but I enjoyed it, and I love Poe. If you have to choose between "The Monk" and "The Castle of Otranto," I'd go with "Monk." It's a whole lot longer, but it's also better. "Castle" is very spastic--look! Something's happening! Look! Something else is happening! But "Monk" actually has characters who act in fairly realistic ways. So it's better.

Yeah, my list is getting pretty long. Why are all these guys on TV and not in my life? Oh, well. At least I can enjoy looking at them!

*snorfle* Oh, SPN. My friend kicked me into watching it, too. My sister is the one who really got hooked on it, though. I ended up only watching the s2 finale because I was *reeealy* bored, and she was watching it, lol. But, there are pretty icons! ...and a lot of Wincest. But that's avoidable, yes, so *laughs*

I totally mean I'm glad you're enjoying it. Yep. You know what you should watch next, though, since you can't avoid new fandoms? Doctor Who. Also, Buffy, because the first three seasons are the Very Best, so you don't *really* need to get into all seven seasons (because it really *is* ridiculous, says the girl who's trying to watch s1-4+miniseries of Farscape :S).

I'm very babbling on my "new" computer. This should probably be put to ItM's use.

Right. Ignore me as I spam your journal, and use one of my SPN icons-that-I-don't-really-ever-use-anymore? ;p

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2007-07-22 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I really didn't expect to get into it, so I'm very pleasantly surprised. I adore the icons, though--and hopefully, yes, I'll be able to avoid the Wincest. People, people, people. Don't you understand that not every deep, meaningful relationship has to be sexual? Seriously, what happened to the glory of platonic and/or familial love? This rather infuriates me.

Buffy's next on my list, actually (well, right after Friday Night Lights, that is; I always meant to watch it and never could get around to it; hopefully I'll get my hands on it online somehow), and yes, then I'll be checking out Dr. Who. Thanks for the recommendation.

Glad to see you and your new computer are getting along--very, very good. And I don't mind you spamming my journal; I find it quite fun, actually.

People are the frequent--some may say "only"--cause of *headdesk.* Wincest is a very good example of why. It's just...*sigh* Unfortunately, it seems to be one of the most prevalent aspects of the SPN fandom, too, which could be why I've drifted from it...my love for a show is only helped by a good fandom :\

Friday Night Lights is an *excellent* show--and...you're in the States, right? So you can easily and legally watch it for free on the nbc website. I'm in Canada, of course, so I haven't been able to take advantage of it myself, but I don't think I've really heard of Americans having a problem with it....

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2007-07-23 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree about *headdesk*. And I understand your feelings about good fandoms--if I'm going to have to wade through a ton of Wincest to find the good stuff, I ain't gonna be happy.

Yeah, I'm in the States, so thanksfor the heads up on the website. I'm not sure I really realized that--I watched a couple of episodes of Lost on ABC's website, just to catch up, but they usually only had the season premiere and then the last four or five that aired.
