random complaint of the day

You know what I hate? When I read the summary of a story and think, "Wow! That sounds awesome! I’ve been waiting forever for someone to write this story!" And then you start reading it and it’s so badly written that you can’t even continue.

Like, it’s a form of torture. Worse than the story not existing at all.

*sob*

:(

sometimes it's just too awful to keep reading. and I can never bring myself to say it's horrible because someone out there likes it and people don't need their self esteem cut down to my standards but still.

it makes you want to rewrite it so there are options.

Oh, I'd never review. I just close out the window and feel sad.

I KNOW. Mostly I want to recruit someone whose writing I like to rewrite it for me.

This is so sad.

And then you start wondering, hmmm, if I had written this it would have been so better. And then you feel bad for thinking those thoughts, but you really don't.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I actually don't feel bad for thinking that--I would if I said it, but..some of these fics are really bad. :D

SO True! hahahaha.

[identity profile] anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh it's like my whole life.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It suuuuuucks.

[identity profile] bobthemole.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. THIS. Also true for movies, especially those in the "family" genre.

Word.

It's like your dream has been tainted.

[identity profile] fenchurche.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I know *exactly* how you feel!

[identity profile] streussal.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sob, yes.

[identity profile] viorica8957.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Always. Actually, this was how I felt when that Ridley Scott Robin Hood movie came out: "what do you mean 'Robin Hood played straight?' I already had that idea! You're not even doing anything different from Gladiator! DAMN YOU, RIDLEY SCOTT."

[identity profile] unbridled-b.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I just went through that with Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. The premise sounded really intriguing, and I have a gift card for B&N, so I figured I couldn't lose. How wrong I was. How very, very wrong. :(

Fortunately, it rarely happens that way with fanfiction. I have a "safe list" of authors I read, and unless someone recommends something, I rarely deviate from that list. It's just easier that way. ;)

Awww, what fandom was it? I'm curious!

I hate being disappointed by bad fic, but I love to gawk at it when I know it's bad fic. :P

EVIL.

I know! And then I have to wonder, did you have a beta for your summary? Why didn't they stick around for the entire story?

[identity profile] tabitha666.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg! Yes, a million times yes. It always makes me go on some (often fruitless) search for a similar story.

[identity profile] slaymesoftly.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods vigorously* I'm constantly amazed at the people who say it doesn't matter how poorly a story is written because "it has a wonderful plot!" A good story deserves good presentation.

OH MY GOD THIS SO MUCH.

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, that's like 90% of the BDSM Spuffy fics I try to read. *sigh*

[identity profile] diamondtook862.livejournal.com 2011-02-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
So, so true. And like someone said above, this is what drove me to start writing fic, 'cause there is so much awesome fic out there, but it usually illuminates things I'd never think to want (Spike/Buffy mpreg hi) rather than what I want to see my characters explore for the sake of my own twisted brain. But when you read enough fics that sound like what you truly in your heart of hearts want to read, and then you just can't get through them, it makes you decide to write it yourself and be done with it. Of course, there's also asking an awesome writer who asks for prompts and is awesome to write it (cough*Spike&Snape mpregSnick*cough). :)
next_to_normal: (Spike/Dawn sigh)

Gah, yes! Me too!

[identity profile] zombie_boogie.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
That's the worst. It's especially awful if it's a rare pairing that you've been wanting to find more fic for, or a story concept that you just know will not be tackled again.

fanfic's a bit like russian roulette, i think.
