I hate the idea that Xander might be right about Buffy being such a weak, emotional woman that she couldn't handle the truth and would have lost to Angel if she actually had all the relevant information.
"The Xander betrayal issue... hasn't come up with us, and here's why. Xander made a decision. Like a general going into battle, he had to keep Buffy's fighting spirit strong and he felt telling her the truth would blunt it. And Angel needed to be stopped. It was a tough decision, and an unpopular one, but I'm not sure it wasn't the right one. I'm on the fence, and that's what makes it FUN! So there." (joss, Oct 20 21:42 1998).
The thing with Joss is that he writes such complex, morally ambiguous situations that practically any POV can be justified. And he always sits on a fence and lets fans decide for themselves. He's right about the capslocks FUN, until fandom wars start. :)
Anyways, even the hate threads are the tribute to the Joss' genius. People are so passionate about the show that has ended more than seven years ago. Come to think of it, it's mind-blowing.

Joss himself was ambiguous about it.
