Yay for a reaction post!

OKAY! It’s Vampire Diaries time!

Yes, I love this show. And can’t wait for the new season. And now I’m just going to throw out a bunch of random and completely unstructured thoughts!

- Is this the most fantastically-paced show in the world? I think it might be! Nothing is dragged out for too long but (almost) nothing feels rushed, either! (The one exception was how quickly they killed off Vicki. Um, there was a ton of stuff you could have done with her, show. She wasn’t my favorite, but there was lots of places you could have gone. But this is a minor quibble.)

- I adore Elena. I was so worried I was going to hate her because I figured she’d be Bella Swan-like. Or Sookie-like. But no! She isn’t stupid! She stands up for herself! She knows when to be brave and rush in and when not to be stupid and hang back! She‘s smart and resourceful and kind. She doesn't get so distracted by her vampire love that she forgets other people are important. And she DEMANDS ANSWERS. Also, she is very, very pretty. Yay Elena!

- Stefan is kind of blah, but I don't dislike him. He is pretty much Angel-meets-Edward Cullen. He even looks like Angel, in addition to acting like him. Only he isn’t a closet doof like Angel is, which is one of the few endearing things about Angel. His past, though, like Angel’s, is interesting, and when he was all CRAZY ON THE BLOOD, I found him very fun. More of that, please.

- Yes, yes, Damon is hugely entertaining. His attitude is way fun, and he’s got layers! What with the whole loving Katherine forever and Stefan pushing him to become a vamp. I have to admit, though, it took some time for me to invest in him, though I started to there at the end. I also like how they’re taking their time with his “redemption.” It’s pretty clear at this point that he mostly just cares about Elena. And also about the town, but more as a “don’t hurt what’s mine” than for any other reason. I want them to keep taking their time with it. Don’t rush it, please! It’ll just make it more satisfying in the long run!

I think, though, that I may be the only person on the planet who doesn’t find Ian Somerhalder that attractive. Like, I look at him and I easily see why other people find him so. But he just doesn’t do it for me. But then, I’ve always had random and unpredictable taste in guys, so I guess this shouldn’t be surprising.

- Yeah, I started to ship Damon/Elena a little bit there at the end. I didn’t think it would happen because I really wasn’t feeling it for the bulk of the season. But when Isabel was all, “Uh, because he’s in love with you, you idiot,” I did squeal a bit.

But really, I just like their friendship right now. I like how sort of comfortable they are with each other and how they seem to have a strange understanding. I like that she’s come to care about him and that she’s his only friend and that he really likes her company. My favorite moments with them was when they were watching over Stefan while he was CRAZY ON THE BLOOD. Especially the moment when she was sitting writing in her notebook and he came up and picked up her feet and sat down and put them in his lap and they just carried on. I love their kind of comfort and familiarity.

I honestly don’t want the ship to happen between them for a while because if it does, it’ll be all angsty and love triangley with Stefan and Elena will be all conflicted and I just don’t want to go there right now. Eventually, I think this could be the ship for me, but I want them to have lots of friendship and weird understanding moments first. Plus, I like boys in unrequited love, so that would be fun.

And yeah, maybe part of that is that I just always wanted to see what Spike and Buffy would be like if they were friends for a while first, though I am of course satisfied with the way their story played out. But I want this go a different route.

- I really just do not care about the Stefan/Elena romance. It’s one of those cases where the script is like this:

Show: Look! Here are Two Attractive Young People! They are in love! You should be invested in their love!

Me: Why? They don’t even know each other. What do they find attractive about each other, other than the fact that they’re both good-looking?

Show: It doesn’t matter! Just go with it!

Me: Hmph.

They don’t anger me or anything (unlike a certain ship that seems to think that my friends spend all their time concocting conspiracies to take over fandom), I just don’t have any investment. That said, the whole “I have to know her!” thing is pretty creepy. I mean, it makes sense that once he saw this girl who looked just like Katherine he would sort of stalk her in order to find out what her deal was. But still. Slightly creepy, if much less so than your typical Cullen move.

I guess why I am bored with them is because there’s no internal conflict--it’s all external--his vampireness. As many of you know, my types are either A) married couples (the Taylors, Wash and Zoe, the Agathons, etc.), B) sweet and innocent (Victor/Sierra, Jessica and Hoyt), or C) people who look like opposites on the surface and so clash a lot--often with fun banter!--but turn out to really understand each other (Buffy/Spike, Logan/Veronica, Rory/Jess, etc.). And I am always, always, always more interested in the couple whose barrier to their being together is their own personalities rather than some sort of outside force. So, really, the only time I was vaguely interested in these two was when he was all CRAZY ON THE BLOOD. But yeah, I’m over it, and I hope there’s less of it next season. Though I will say that I didn’t feel like the season got weighed down by it the way S3 of BtVS got weighed down by Buffy/Angel. So there’s that.

- Damon and Stefan’s relationship is like Spike and Angel kicked into overdrive. Obviously, I love it. More of that, please!

- Hello, show all about family! Siblings! Kickass grandmas! Crazy uncles who are actually your dads! Yay!

- Bonnie is the greatest character EVER. I basically want her to be in every scene ever and keep on being an awesome witch. MOAR BONNIE, PLEASE, SHOW. I miss her when she is gone. I also knew that she hadn’t really disabled the device, and I thought that was incredibly realistic. I’m glad she ended up saving the boys anyways, because I love her relationship with Elena and want them back to being all BFF-y. Also, I hope the show doesn’t start to treat her like the Wallace and not give her anything to do. Please give her loads to do next season! Please!

- Speaking of which, HELLO SHOW THAT ADMITS HOW IMPORTANT WOMEN ARE TO EACH OTHER. Yay for awesome relationships between the ladies! The power of BFF-ness is taken very seriously on this show, and I adore it.

- I have no idea whether this will surprise any of you, but my ship so far is TOTALLY Caroline/Matt. I don’t know why. I don’t think they’re anything like my usual type, but I find them adorable. Perhaps because they’re both so alone and sad and I just like the idea of them making each other happy.

- Actually, I adore Caroline. I feel like she’s a character I could so easily hate, and it’s true that she can be thoughtless and self-centered and obnoxious. But how could I not relate to someone who would say that bit about trying so hard and being jealous of those who don’t even have to try? Plus, the whole abyss versus kiddie pool bit sealed my love for her forever. Oh, and I was beyond thrilled for her when she won the Miss Mystic because she obviously wanted it so much more than Elena did. I want more Caroline. And more Matt. I think she’ll be okay after this car accident, because I think they would have dramatically killed her in the season finale if they were going to do so, but I hope there’s more of her next season.

- Matt is a sweetheart. I’m glad they didn’t go the obvious route of making Elena’s ex kind of a douche. I like that he’s nice.

- Tyler is a jerk and also boring. I am curious about what he is, but I don’t want him being in the limelight next season.

- Oh. Jeremy. I bounce back and forth between a few moments of my heart melting at his puppy-ness and lots of time being very annoyed with him. He obviously had that whole Save the Fallen Girl! Thing going on with Vickie, but I think he could outgrow that. And I love that there were ~ramifications to what Damon did to him. I also ended up liking him and Anna and was sad when she died. And I feel for him, since he’s had so many horrible things happen to him in such a short time and at such a young age. But when he was all angsty with the pills there at the end, I just rolled my eyes. Seriously, kid? Seriously? Please be more interesting next season. Also, please have more scenes with your sister, as I guarantee this will make me like you more.

- OH HAI THERE, DAVID ANDERS. UNEXPECTED GUEST ROLE IS UNEXPECTED! (But exciting!)

- Bonnie’s grandma was a BADASS. I knew she would die when she kept pushing Bonnie to do the spell and it broke my heart. I wish they’d kept her around.

- I am still mourning Lexie.

- Any show that has Florence + the Machine AND Bat for Lashes on the soundtrack is automatically awesome. The end!

- QUIT KILLING AWESOME PEOPLE, DAMON. SERIOUSLY? GINA TORRES? YOU DON’T RIP HER HEART OUT. SHE WILL END YOU AND HER HUSBAND LAWRENCE FISHBURNE WILL HELP.

- The whole Elena/Katherine sharing the Salvatore boys thing makes me lol forever and also makes me kind of sad that I know it’ll never really go there with Elena because I think it would be hilarious.

- I want more moments of Damon and Alaric kicking ass together. I absolutely LOVE how they seem to have come to have a weird sort of alliance and I want more of that. Basically, I want them to eventually become BFFs but always deny it.

- Oh, yeah. I like Alaric. I love how they took the obvious backstory for him--the whole dead wife, revenge against vamps thing--and spun it with the twist that Isabel actually wanted to be turned.

- I love how everyone is related to everyone else in this show. I do not know why.

- People die left and right on this show, don’t they? And it’s mostly women. Although the show has a larger percentage of women than most shows, so that’s okay. But there are very few shows that have unexpected deaths that genuinely shock me, but Vicki made my jaw drop.

- I so called the John-is-her-dad thing from the moment they hinted that he had a connection to Isabel. I win!

- Katherine is one crazy bitch (there is no other way to describe her). Things are about to get REALLY interesting, aren’t they?

- Anything I missed? Ask me!

[eta] I watched the pilot a long, long time ago and wasn't impressed, but I'm so glad I decided to give it another try! It took several episodes to get good but then it got GOOD and kept being GOOD and yay!

- Also, I enjoyed looking for parallels to BtVS. Like the scene where Elena sticks Stefan with the giant needle and tells him to close his eyes and everything is SO just like Buffy sticking the sword through Angel's gut. Stuff like that. Fun.

[eta 2]- I forgot about Anna! OH I LOVED HER. CURSE YOU SHOW. CURSE. YOU.

Basically, I want MORE MORE MORE of this show RIGHT NOW. I’m gonna be all twitchy until it comes back on. I am so in love with it.

And now I need icons!

Oh, and those of you who have posts about this show, link me to them so that I can read them and delight! I love to read other people's squee about my favorite things.

I may be the only person on the planet who doesn’t find Ian Somerhalder that attractive.

I actually don't find Ian attractive, but I find Damon attractive. It's all the personality.

And Damon and Alaric are EPIC FRENEMIES.

Oh, and I like Damon and Elena's quirky relationship now. I hope they don't rush too quickly into make it all shippy and love triangle-y.

True, true. Though it took me a while to figure out that Damon was attractive because of the whole Ian thing.

And Damon and Alaric are EPIC FRENEMIES.

Easily one of my favorite things about the show.

hope they don't rush too quickly into make it all shippy and love triangle-y.

I will cry forever if they do!
