Yay for a reaction post!
OKAY! It’s Vampire Diaries time!
Yes, I love this show. And can’t wait for the new season. And now I’m just going to throw out a bunch of random and completely unstructured thoughts!
- Is this the most fantastically-paced show in the world? I think it might be! Nothing is dragged out for too long but (almost) nothing feels rushed, either! (The one exception was how quickly they killed off Vicki. Um, there was a ton of stuff you could have done with her, show. She wasn’t my favorite, but there was lots of places you could have gone. But this is a minor quibble.)
- I adore Elena. I was so worried I was going to hate her because I figured she’d be Bella Swan-like. Or Sookie-like. But no! She isn’t stupid! She stands up for herself! She knows when to be brave and rush in and when not to be stupid and hang back! She‘s smart and resourceful and kind. She doesn't get so distracted by her vampire love that she forgets other people are important. And she DEMANDS ANSWERS. Also, she is very, very pretty. Yay Elena!
- Stefan is kind of blah, but I don't dislike him. He is pretty much Angel-meets-Edward Cullen. He even looks like Angel, in addition to acting like him. Only he isn’t a closet doof like Angel is, which is one of the few endearing things about Angel. His past, though, like Angel’s, is interesting, and when he was all CRAZY ON THE BLOOD, I found him very fun. More of that, please.
- Yes, yes, Damon is hugely entertaining. His attitude is way fun, and he’s got layers! What with the whole loving Katherine forever and Stefan pushing him to become a vamp. I have to admit, though, it took some time for me to invest in him, though I started to there at the end. I also like how they’re taking their time with his “redemption.” It’s pretty clear at this point that he mostly just cares about Elena. And also about the town, but more as a “don’t hurt what’s mine” than for any other reason. I want them to keep taking their time with it. Don’t rush it, please! It’ll just make it more satisfying in the long run!
I think, though, that I may be the only person on the planet who doesn’t find Ian Somerhalder that attractive. Like, I look at him and I easily see why other people find him so. But he just doesn’t do it for me. But then, I’ve always had random and unpredictable taste in guys, so I guess this shouldn’t be surprising.
- Yeah, I started to ship Damon/Elena a little bit there at the end. I didn’t think it would happen because I really wasn’t feeling it for the bulk of the season. But when Isabel was all, “Uh, because he’s in love with you, you idiot,” I did squeal a bit.
But really, I just like their friendship right now. I like how sort of comfortable they are with each other and how they seem to have a strange understanding. I like that she’s come to care about him and that she’s his only friend and that he really likes her company. My favorite moments with them was when they were watching over Stefan while he was CRAZY ON THE BLOOD. Especially the moment when she was sitting writing in her notebook and he came up and picked up her feet and sat down and put them in his lap and they just carried on. I love their kind of comfort and familiarity.
I honestly don’t want the ship to happen between them for a while because if it does, it’ll be all angsty and love triangley with Stefan and Elena will be all conflicted and I just don’t want to go there right now. Eventually, I think this could be the ship for me, but I want them to have lots of friendship and weird understanding moments first. Plus, I like boys in unrequited love, so that would be fun.
And yeah, maybe part of that is that I just always wanted to see what Spike and Buffy would be like if they were friends for a while first, though I am of course satisfied with the way their story played out. But I want this go a different route.
- I really just do not care about the Stefan/Elena romance. It’s one of those cases where the script is like this:
Show: Look! Here are Two Attractive Young People! They are in love! You should be invested in their love!
Me: Why? They don’t even know each other. What do they find attractive about each other, other than the fact that they’re both good-looking?
Show: It doesn’t matter! Just go with it!
Me: Hmph.
They don’t anger me or anything (unlike a certain ship that seems to think that my friends spend all their time concocting conspiracies to take over fandom), I just don’t have any investment. That said, the whole “I have to know her!” thing is pretty creepy. I mean, it makes sense that once he saw this girl who looked just like Katherine he would sort of stalk her in order to find out what her deal was. But still. Slightly creepy, if much less so than your typical Cullen move.
I guess why I am bored with them is because there’s no internal conflict--it’s all external--his vampireness. As many of you know, my types are either A) married couples (the Taylors, Wash and Zoe, the Agathons, etc.), B) sweet and innocent (Victor/Sierra, Jessica and Hoyt), or C) people who look like opposites on the surface and so clash a lot--often with fun banter!--but turn out to really understand each other (Buffy/Spike, Logan/Veronica, Rory/Jess, etc.). And I am always, always, always more interested in the couple whose barrier to their being together is their own personalities rather than some sort of outside force. So, really, the only time I was vaguely interested in these two was when he was all CRAZY ON THE BLOOD. But yeah, I’m over it, and I hope there’s less of it next season. Though I will say that I didn’t feel like the season got weighed down by it the way S3 of BtVS got weighed down by Buffy/Angel. So there’s that.
- Damon and Stefan’s relationship is like Spike and Angel kicked into overdrive. Obviously, I love it. More of that, please!
- Hello, show all about family! Siblings! Kickass grandmas! Crazy uncles who are actually your dads! Yay!
- Bonnie is the greatest character EVER. I basically want her to be in every scene ever and keep on being an awesome witch. MOAR BONNIE, PLEASE, SHOW. I miss her when she is gone. I also knew that she hadn’t really disabled the device, and I thought that was incredibly realistic. I’m glad she ended up saving the boys anyways, because I love her relationship with Elena and want them back to being all BFF-y. Also, I hope the show doesn’t start to treat her like the Wallace and not give her anything to do. Please give her loads to do next season! Please!
- Speaking of which, HELLO SHOW THAT ADMITS HOW IMPORTANT WOMEN ARE TO EACH OTHER. Yay for awesome relationships between the ladies! The power of BFF-ness is taken very seriously on this show, and I adore it.
- I have no idea whether this will surprise any of you, but my ship so far is TOTALLY Caroline/Matt. I don’t know why. I don’t think they’re anything like my usual type, but I find them adorable. Perhaps because they’re both so alone and sad and I just like the idea of them making each other happy.
- Actually, I adore Caroline. I feel like she’s a character I could so easily hate, and it’s true that she can be thoughtless and self-centered and obnoxious. But how could I not relate to someone who would say that bit about trying so hard and being jealous of those who don’t even have to try? Plus, the whole abyss versus kiddie pool bit sealed my love for her forever. Oh, and I was beyond thrilled for her when she won the Miss Mystic because she obviously wanted it so much more than Elena did. I want more Caroline. And more Matt. I think she’ll be okay after this car accident, because I think they would have dramatically killed her in the season finale if they were going to do so, but I hope there’s more of her next season.
- Matt is a sweetheart. I’m glad they didn’t go the obvious route of making Elena’s ex kind of a douche. I like that he’s nice.
- Tyler is a jerk and also boring. I am curious about what he is, but I don’t want him being in the limelight next season.
- Oh. Jeremy. I bounce back and forth between a few moments of my heart melting at his puppy-ness and lots of time being very annoyed with him. He obviously had that whole Save the Fallen Girl! Thing going on with Vickie, but I think he could outgrow that. And I love that there were ~ramifications to what Damon did to him. I also ended up liking him and Anna and was sad when she died. And I feel for him, since he’s had so many horrible things happen to him in such a short time and at such a young age. But when he was all angsty with the pills there at the end, I just rolled my eyes. Seriously, kid? Seriously? Please be more interesting next season. Also, please have more scenes with your sister, as I guarantee this will make me like you more.
- OH HAI THERE, DAVID ANDERS. UNEXPECTED GUEST ROLE IS UNEXPECTED! (But exciting!)
- Bonnie’s grandma was a BADASS. I knew she would die when she kept pushing Bonnie to do the spell and it broke my heart. I wish they’d kept her around.
- I am still mourning Lexie.
- Any show that has Florence + the Machine AND Bat for Lashes on the soundtrack is automatically awesome. The end!
- QUIT KILLING AWESOME PEOPLE, DAMON. SERIOUSLY? GINA TORRES? YOU DON’T RIP HER HEART OUT. SHE WILL END YOU AND HER HUSBAND LAWRENCE FISHBURNE WILL HELP.
- The whole Elena/Katherine sharing the Salvatore boys thing makes me lol forever and also makes me kind of sad that I know it’ll never really go there with Elena because I think it would be hilarious.
- I want more moments of Damon and Alaric kicking ass together. I absolutely LOVE how they seem to have come to have a weird sort of alliance and I want more of that. Basically, I want them to eventually become BFFs but always deny it.
- Oh, yeah. I like Alaric. I love how they took the obvious backstory for him--the whole dead wife, revenge against vamps thing--and spun it with the twist that Isabel actually wanted to be turned.
- I love how everyone is related to everyone else in this show. I do not know why.
- People die left and right on this show, don’t they? And it’s mostly women. Although the show has a larger percentage of women than most shows, so that’s okay. But there are very few shows that have unexpected deaths that genuinely shock me, but Vicki made my jaw drop.
- I so called the John-is-her-dad thing from the moment they hinted that he had a connection to Isabel. I win!
- Katherine is one crazy bitch (there is no other way to describe her). Things are about to get REALLY interesting, aren’t they?
- Anything I missed? Ask me!
[eta] I watched the pilot a long, long time ago and wasn't impressed, but I'm so glad I decided to give it another try! It took several episodes to get good but then it got GOOD and kept being GOOD and yay!
- Also, I enjoyed looking for parallels to BtVS. Like the scene where Elena sticks Stefan with the giant needle and tells him to close his eyes and everything is SO just like Buffy sticking the sword through Angel's gut. Stuff like that. Fun.
[eta 2]- I forgot about Anna! OH I LOVED HER. CURSE YOU SHOW. CURSE. YOU.
Basically, I want MORE MORE MORE of this show RIGHT NOW. I’m gonna be all twitchy until it comes back on. I am so in love with it.
And now I need icons!
Oh, and those of you who have posts about this show, link me to them so that I can read them and delight! I love to read other people's squee about my favorite things.

Well, I've seen through episode 6, and so far I love Damon, but I'm not ready to get icons or something like that (getting icons denotes a close, personal relationship with a show. I'm just now getting Doctor Who icons, and we've been seeing each other for about two months), and whenever I see Jeremy getting high, I think of this song:

Seriously, I'm so right there with you. Oh, and I've loved David Anders ever since he played Sark on Alias and loved him again on Heroes so while everyone else was going "Oh my god, I hate Uncle John" I was thinking to myself "Yay Uncle John! Get your villian on!" But seriously, it always seemed to me that Uncle John on the surface is the guy to root for. And I never really got why the fans hate him so much. Okay, yes, what he did in the finale was awful, but people immediately hated him before he'd even done anything evil. So... hmmm.
BONNIE. YAY BONNIE! I read a really fantastic Bonnie fic, but I don't remember what it's called or by who. *tries to find it because it was that good*
YES I FOUND IT! A Bonnie character study: see us all as lonely fires by
Hey look! I found my TVD reaction post after the season was over!
Here's some comms:
Look how helpful I am! It's 'cause I love you. ♥

Oh, you're gonna want icons when you get to the end. Trust.
HAHAHAHA. I now will always associate that song with Jeremy forever!

Yeah, I'm a huge David Anders fan, and I thought he was fantastically evil again.
YAY LINKS!
I can't wait to check things ooooout! You are extremely helpful and I love you back!

Its my secret plan to convert everyone I know to watch this show.
Also? I love how you mentioned the Jess/Rory thing in comparison to D/E because I so see parallels between these two all the time. The whole, he's only nice to her and everyone hates him, and she's a good girl, don't go getting involved with him thing. I just see it in the silent gestures and the quiet moments and getting each other.
Can you tell I'm a D/E fan. Because I totally am. I've been sold on them since that first kitchen moment. But ITA with you that this CANNOT BE RUSHED! And neither can Damon's redemption. Take it slow and have them build a friendship. And once S/E have been squared away they can go for it.
Because yeah Why? They don’t even know each other. What do they find attractive about each other, other than the fact that they’re both good-looking? is exactly me on S/E. I don't get it. So once that's done, they can move on to D/E.
I have confidence that this show will do it justice though. Because they do everything right! The pacing is amazing and storylines are not ignored and its GOOD TELEVISION. I love it. I'm in love with this show so much.
But back to D/E. The thing is also so amazing on their own too. Elena is not the Mary sue people try and make her out to be. She's strong and she cares about people and she's stubborn and flawed. But she's real and I love her.
And Damon Salvatore needs no explanation. This is my initial response to the show way back when. And this is the season 2 promo they showed at Comic Con. Its horrible quality but its AMAZING. And Katherine is back and all HBIC and in that one minute I somehow became a Stefan/Katherine shipper. What? I know. But really. Watch it.
Also? here is some amazing fic and video to convince you D/E is indeed the ship for you.
Okay. /end flailing.

AGREED. This is such a delicate thing, and I'm biting my fingernails hoping they'll get it right! If it were any other show, I'd think they couldn't possibly pull it off, but this show has made nearly all of the right steps so far so I have HOPE. REAL HOPE.
Elena is not the Mary sue people try and make her out to be. She's strong and she cares about people and she's stubborn and flawed. But she's real and I love her.
Agreed. I expected to hate her; instead I love her.
Yay links! That was horrible quality, but I LOVED IT. KATHERINE IS GONNA TAKE OVER THIS SHOOOOOW.

- Yay matching icons!
- You are so right about how excellently fast-paced this show is. There's not a single episode that counts as a standalone; something huge and crazy happens nearly every time. I love it.
- That said, the whole “I have to know her!” thing is pretty creepy.
And what makes it worse is that they use that specific line in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE PREVIOUSLIES. Dear God. Like, most of the time I like Stefan fine; I would like it if there could be just one Good Vampire Boyfriend without a hint of overdramatic creeperdom, and for the most part he does okay with that. AND THEN THE PREVIOUSLIES REMIND ME OF HOW HE KNOWS THE RISKS BUT HE HAS TO
STALK HER FOR MONTHS BEFORE THEY MEETKNOW HER. Over and over again. I am willing to give him a little leeway because of the Katherine doppleganger thing, as opposed to Edward's "oh I'll sit in her bedroom at night just for the hell of it" mentality, but sheeeeesh.- I love their kind of comfort and familiarity.
My favorite Elena/Damon moment is when she's buttoning up his shirt and talking about meeting her birth mother, and Damon's like "So what? She left you. She sucks." I love how there's still some mistrust, because Damon is a semi-sociopath, but it's mixed with this sort of...casuality. Like when they go to Georgia and Elena's like >:| I CAN'T BE IN GEORGIA and then it transitions to "...ffff whatever I'm going to get drunk" and the entire time Damon's all "*shrug* *shrug* *shrug*
ilu"That might not be the best summary of their dynamic ever since I haven't seen that ep in awhile, but still. Heh.
- I love Elena. I love Bonnie. I love Caroline. HEARTS FOR THEM ALL. Also, I want Caroline to find out about the vampires next season. Hopefully in a way where she, you know, gets to keep her pulse.
- Tyler sucks. And I think he's supposed to be a werewolf? Whatever. He sucks. Matt can stay and keep being sweet to Caroline though.
- I love that Katherine wasn't cheating on the brothers and that it was like a legitimate polyamorous relationship everyone was aware of. I would be lying if I said I didn't want Elena to have them both too. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE HAREMS AROUND HERE. (And I love that all Damon truly wants is to share a vampire girlfriend with his brother. BEST.)
- I completely fell for it when they set Alaric up as a vampire. And then when they showed him in sunlight looking for his ring I was all :oooo WHAT BE THESE SHENANIGANS.
- I CAN'T WAIT FOR CRAZY BITCH KATHERINE NO DOUBT IMPERSONATING ELENA SOME MORE NEXT SEASON. <3 <3 <3
- I am off to reply to your comment on my entry! SO EXCITING. WHEN IS SEPTEMBER.

THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE THING EVER. I AM SO FLATTERED.
- That icon was seriously too gorgeous to pass up.
- YES YES YES re: the previously and a nice vampire boyfriend. ABSOLUTELY.
- My favorite Elena/Damon moment is when she's buttoning up his shirt and talking about meeting her birth mother, and Damon's like "So what? She left you. She sucks." I love how there's still some mistrust, because Damon is a semi-sociopath, but it's mixed with this sort of...casuality.
EXACTLY.
- Also, I want Caroline to find out about the vampires next season.
Me, too. Because I feel so bad for her when ~THINGS are going on with Elena and Bonnie and Caroline feels all left out. I want her in on this. And I also want her to tell Damon off. Like, I am so enjoying Damon, but he needs to recognize how NOT OKAY it was to treat her that way.
- Tyler sucks. And I think he's supposed to be a werewolf? Whatever. He sucks. Matt can stay and keep being sweet to Caroline though. YES YES. Also, yeah, I think werewolf.
- t was like a legitimate polyamorous relationship everyone was aware of. I would be lying if I said I didn't want Elena to have them both too. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE HAREMS AROUND HERE. (And I love that all Damon truly wants is to share a vampire girlfriend with his brother. BEST.)
So hilariously awesome. I wonder if they'll have the guts to go there with Elena. I kind of doubt it.
- OMG I FELL FOR IT, TOO. I was like, "He's soooo a vampire." And then he wasn't! And he was better than that!
- KATHERINE YEAH!
- YAY!

Am I wrong in making a BtVS:TVD::Old Testament:New parallel? I dunno--it makes sense in my head kinda. In a blurry watercolor sense; not that I'm saying TVD is better than BtVS 'cause that would be sacrilege!
I'm thinking about doing a rewatch and then mayyyyyyyyybe some fic.
Also, I should really get some icons!

Am I wrong in making a BtVS:TVD::Old Testament:New?
HA! I really hope that this show keeps being awesome so that I can legitimately say it's inherited Buffy's awesome. I think it has the potential to be nearly as great.
YAY FIC!

Yeah, I do think it has the potential. I'd definitely say the pacing is better than BtVS' overall and as far as first seasons go, TVD wins. But, I mean, BUFFY. So...

- I mentioned this in my other comment but if Caroline gets some well-done interaction with Damon about what a creep he was to her and he apologizes like he did with Vicki, I'll be satisfied. Just. DON'T LET THIS BE ONE OF THE THINGS YOU FORGET ABOUT SHOW. (IT'S KIND OF IMPORTANT TO ME.)
- I like how they're handling Matt and Caroline, especially with the awkward Elena's Ex factor. Like you get the feeling Matt wants to move on, but he can't help that he has such a long history with her. The double-date episode was very well-written, IMO.
- Also, how fantastic was that fakeout Elena/Damon-but-really-Katherine/Damon moment? THAT SLY GIRL. I can't wait to see what Damon does when he finds out. (I can't wait to see what Stefan does either.)

FIC IT YES. Also, icons. It doesn't have to be a ~secret shame anymore! :D

After watching the season finale I was gushing to the mister about the pacing and the cliffhanger and how I couldn't wait for the next season and he was all "...umm, I thought you hated the first couple of episodes. You're still watching that show?" Hey, a gal can change her mind!

Matt and Caroline are my OTP as well. Mostly, because Caroline is totally the HBIC and my favorite character and well...holy cuteness!
Agreed on Stefan/Elena. I do not loathe it like everyone else but...boring.

It's just...I dunno, my boyfriend and I have made fun of it for a year, because we kept catching the last five minutes of it before Supernatural came on, and someone was always crying, stalking away melodramatically into the night, etc. It just looked pretty silly to me.
NOW. I have heard that it is actually a good show from other people, and I can see by the parts outside your cut that you really, really like the show a lot. I trust your TV opinions, because you have never led me down a wrong path before. So: this show is worth watching, yes?

And btw "waggles eyebrows".

I actually don't find Ian attractive, but I find Damon attractive. It's all the personality.
And Damon and Alaric are EPIC FRENEMIES.
Oh, and I like Damon and Elena's quirky relationship now. I hope they don't rush too quickly into make it all shippy and love triangle-y.

I love the witches, all of them, and I hope we get to see more of them show up as the show progresses. Bonnie warning Stefan that she'll take both him and his brother out if people start dying filled me with joy. Damon... angers me when he kills all the characters I like (Lexi! Gina Torres! Zak!) but I think the contrast he provides with Stefan is good, and he's not 2D in that he has guilt over one or two victims. It's not much, but it adds character to his character :)
Katherine inspires me to write fic. Probably because she's crazy but also because she makes people crazy and that leads to fun scenarios. I also really like how Elena isn't dopey and Bella-like, and she's not afraid while recognizing the quite-dangerous town she lives in.
Still mourning Lexi and Anna. But the BFFs on the show! I often get frustrated when shows always pit women against each other in the race for "the man" but Bonnie/Elena/Caroline are so easy to relate to, even with their magical problems. It doesn't quite feel like high school either, which is nice.
I didn't find Ian that attractive in LOST but absolutely, I do in TVD. It must be the snark.
Strangely, I also like how these vampires don't smoke. They drink, but they don't smoke which Joss' vampires do and since I think it's gross, I could never appreciate those shots. Weird thing to like, but there it is.

I couldn't agree more. That would be awesome and it would prove just how awesome the show is.

YES. And even when he can't give her everything she wants, I can never stay mad at Matt because he's trying. But I desperately want him to reach the point where he can give Caroline everything because she deserves that. I want her to be first for someone.
Also, how fantastic was that fakeout Elena/Damon-but-really-Katherine/Damon moment? THAT SLY GIRL. I can't wait to see what Damon does when he finds out. (I can't wait to see what Stefan does either.)
AH SO GOOD! As soon as I figured out who she was I had to go back and rewatch that Damon scene again. And it kind of broke my heart that Elena wasn't the one to hear that stuff. TEAR.

I want them going on more road trips and Damon having her over for popcorn and "Jersey Shore" viewing parties. Stefan would just not get it.
AGREED! I just want so much more of that casual friendship between them! More more more!
I changed my mind, too! I thought that first episode was cheestastic and then the next few were almost as bad but then it got all GOOD and stuff!

I do not loathe it like everyone else but...boring.
Yup. I'm glad they don't make me angry, but I can't work up any interest.

No, seriously. The first four or five episodes are pretty bleh and cheestastic. And then, out of nowhere, it becomes complex and awesome and interesting. With all sorts of strong female characters! Who have relationships with each other! And an interesting mythology! And just enough of the soap opera he's-related-to-her-who's-descended-from-her-who-dated-him to keep things interesting. Plus, I guarantee you will love Damon!
It definitely has the good angst, but there's so much great character stuff and interesting mythology that I love it to death. So much fun! Watch it: definitely.

Easily one of my favorite things about the show.
hope they don't rush too quickly into make it all shippy and love triangle-y.
I will cry forever if they do!

Yeah, Damon's really fascinating because he's so very 3D and complicated. There's so much going on with him that he ends up not being the cliche he should be. I love it.
You should DEFINITELY write Katherine!fic!

YES YES YES.
And agreed about Damon being attractive because of the snark. That does it for me.
Ha! I hadn't noticed that, but you're right! Smoking's gross.

That's exactly how I felt! I was like, "Show, you are not supposed to be this good! How did you become this good?"

It's more Katherine/Damon than Katherine/Stefan but I wouldn't call it shippy - it's a look at the 145 years Katherine was hiding from the brothers. Which I want to know more about next season.

That sounds epic!

I'm looking at you, Dollhouse.Just. NNGH. I won't be surprised if they don't come back to it, but oh JFC I want them to. I really do.I can never stay mad at Matt because he's trying. But I desperately want him to reach the point where he can give Caroline everything because she deserves that. I want her to be first for someone.
Caroline Forbes deserves a boy who treats her like a princess. I AM JUST SAYING.
I watched an s2 preview clip the other day and it was mostly Katherine being a badass but there was a brief moment where Damon was like "I KISSED ELENA" and Stefan got all >:(((((. SO. EXCITED.
Oh, boys. This is what happens when you fall in love with your ex's doppleganger. All kinds of mistaken identities and confessing-to-the-wrong-person shenanigans happen, and then your hearts get done broke.

I loved Vicki and was SO sorry when she died (the second time).
Especially the moment when she was sitting writing in her notebook and he came up and picked up her feet and sat down and put them in his lap and they just carried on. I love their kind of comfort and familiarity.
That moment was so brief yet said SO MUCH.
And if you're interesting in my squee, just hit 'the vampire diaries' tag on my lj.
