Reaction posts are fun! Yay!
And now for a spoilery Being Erica reaction post!
Do not read this if there's even a chance you might watch this show, 'kay?
So this isn't gonna be in any kind of order. Don't expect it to be.
1. I love Erica. Even when she reminds me too much of myself. Even when she's nothing like me at all and I can't figure her out. I just like her a whole, whole lot. I also covet her clothes. She wears so many cute dresses in S2! I want her wardrobe.
2. Dr. Tom is cool. I remembering having a moment in the pilot when he grabs Erica's arm and I went WHOA THERE THAT'S NOT OKAY. And it kind of lurked there in the back of my mind, despite my general liking of him. But this show is awesome because that moment became part of a major plot point. And they dealt with his anger and his issues and thank you, show. The stuff with his daughter broke my heart.
3. Sam. I like her character a lot because she doesn't make it easy to like or love her. She's very closed-off and stubborn and I love the show for GOING THERE with her wedding episode. I've come to feel a great deal of affection for her, too, and a very older-sisterly instinct towards her. I want Josh-the-Worst-Husband-Ever to stay far, far away from her. I also want her to stay way from Kai. In that episode I yelled, "NO SAM DON'T!" twice, first when she slept with Kai--he loves Erica!--and then when I thought she was going back to Josh. Seriously, she should listen to me and her life would be easier.
4. I adore Leo. And I love that they did with Leo what they did with the parents--let's show that when you're young you see things and black and white, but people are always people and you have to grow up and face their failures and weaknesses. It's not something I see done a lot on TV, but I love that that process of learning to see people as complex human beings is so central to the show.
5. Speaking of complex human beings, there needs to be more exploration of Judith. She needs more layers. Also, her baby is adorable. Honestly, though, Jenny and Katie are presented as a lot more complex than she is. I hope they really dig into her a bit more in the future.
6. Julianne is a fantastic character. She started out as a caricature, but then she became more layered and I began to feel sympathy for her and now I am thrilled to death at the thought of her and Erica founding their own company. Yay! Also, I HATE Friedkin. What a jerk! Poor Julianne!
7. I thought Ethan was cute at the beginning, and I liked him fine, even if I never cared about his relationship with Erica. I became less and less impressed with him as the show went on and more and more impressed with the writing and the way it started laying out all the reasons he and Erica don't work together till we get to the end of S2 and they break up and it makes total sense. Well-played, show.
8. I kind of can't wrap my brain around the time travel thing. So when you go back to the future, your past self forgets all about what you did while you were back in past self's body? I mean, that's why Kai forgets about Erica. But how does this practically work? Like, Erica went back and slept with Alex Berlin instead of jerk-face, but when her past self gets back in her body (and where does past-self go during this time? Inquiring minds!), does she remember sleeping with him? No? So does someone have to tell her, "Hey, you lost your virginity to Alex Berlin"? And then she'd be all, "Why would I do that?"
It baffles me.
9. Sometimes I can tell something really embarrassing is about to happen and I have to pause the show and go do other stuff for a while before I can work up the courage to watch. I think it's a testament to how much I enjoy the show that I can actually watch the embarrassing stuff--unlike, say, The Office, which I just can't watch.
10. KAI KAI KAI. Okay, yeah, he's pretty. Very pretty. But I'm also just intrigued by him. His absolute refusal to talk about therapy was really a great thing for the writers to do: we've been so far in Erica's headspace that the idea of someone not wanting to talk about it feels foreign. So when he refuses...way to whip up instant intrigue, show!
AND THEN WE FIND OUT HE'S A ROCK STAR AND HE WEARS EYELINER. *has a weakness for boys in eyeliner who aren't otherwise too made up* That flashforward episode was awesome (Erica's wig aside), though it made my heart sink because as soon as I realized what was going on, I realized what his arc would be and how the last episode would go. *sob*
Speaking of that last episode I CRIED WHEN HE PLAYED THAT SONG AND THERE WAS A MONTAGE. And then when he didn't recognize Erica? Rip my heart out, why don't you? Also, when he asked if he should look her up and she said that thing about being 40, and I'm like, "Seriously, Erica. He totally doesn't care." Besides older!Erica/young!rockstar!Kai would be pretty hot, amiright?
I really, really want to see them have a time-traveling relationship or something. And yeah, I ship it, but I really just want to watch them interact. Because they get each other. They have this huge thing that they share that they can't talk about to anyone else. And I just love to watch them interact. It's kinda like Buffy and Spike: yeah, I want them to be together and happy always, but more than that, I just want to watch them interact, because I always enjoy them just being in the same room. Always.
OH SHOW WHY DO YOU SINK MY SHIP? Except that I've heard a rumor he'll be back next season? I certainly hope so because I'm kind of not looking forward to the next season otherwise. I mean, I hate to be that person who doesn't want to watch if the pretty boy isn't there (I'm kinda like that with BtVS, too), but I sort of am anyways. SO MORE KAI.
11. This show uses the same songs over and over. It annoys me. That song about raindrops or something that played like the first six times Erica and Ethan kissed? DO NOT WANT. They need to stop doing that.
12. I don't know that I'm ever gonna love this show like I do some others, but I enjoy it a whole lot and I'm glad people told me to watch it. :D And I want a fandom. With lots of Kai-fic.
And that's all that's coming to mind right now. I'm sure I'm leaving something out so feel free to ask questions, say "What about ____?" or squee/rant/ponder your heart out.

1. OMG ME TOO. I love her wardrobe, I love her hair, I love her everything. I basically want to BE her.
2. Yes! I feel like this show is so aware, you know? Like most shows would have something like Dr. Tom grabbing her and it wouldn't even register. And, I don't know, maybe I give them too much credit and they weren't planning on that character arc when they did the pilot, but still, it makes me feel better knowing that it ultimately has a purpose.
3. It took me a long time to warm up to Sam, and I think I finally did it during the wedding episode. Which is weird, because that's when she and Erica are at their worst point, but I love that she's not portrayed as being crazy or irrational for hating what Erica did. It's a totally valid response, and it's treated that way. (And OMG stay away from Kai!! And Josh!! I want Sam to find a nice boy.)
4. Hee, it bothers me occasionally that Erica looks so much older than Leo (which is an actor problem, I realize). In fact, the first time we saw him, I thought she WAS the oldest, and so I was kind of confused when it turned out she wasn't. But yeah, I liked the disillusionment that he wasn't the perfect older brother Erica had idolized. We so do that, you know? Whitewash the bad when we remember people we love (especially when they're not around to remind us of their faults).
5. Word.
6. Agreed. I kind of hated Julianne at first; now I can't imagine the show without her.
7. Yes! I was a little impressed with the way things worked out with Ethan. Once I realized it was never going to work with Kai, I assumed that Erica and Ethan would get over the rough patch and move on like nothing happened. And I kept thinking, "But I don't WANT them together, because they're SO WRONG for each other." And then it turned out the show was doing that on purpose. :)
8. Yeah, it's not totally clear, but I think it has a lot to do with magic. :) We've never really seen what past!Erica did once she returned to her own body, but she'd have to know what she did, even if she didn't know WHY she did it. Maybe Kai is just special because his relationship with Erica revolved around the time travel - i.e. if he remembered Erica, he'd have to remember how he knows Erica, and that would be knowledge of the future (that someday he's going to be in time-traveling therapy).
10. Also, when he asked if he should look her up and she said that thing about being 40, and I'm like, "Seriously, Erica. He totally doesn't care." Besides older!Erica/young!rockstar!Kai would be pretty hot, amiright? OMG SO MUCH YES!! *wants* I kind of hope he does try to find her, despite what she said, and they totally get together. And then he comes back to Erica's time for another regret and they meet up and he knows her future and it's like The Time Traveler's Wife except not sucky.
They have this huge thing that they share that they can't talk about to anyone else.
I have heard a rumor that we'll meet another patient next season...
Also, I need more Being Erica icons, because these two are getting a workout!!

I agree that Ethan was wrong for her and I believed that when they began their relationship but I don't think that Kai is right either. They happen to have this huge secret together but I can't see what they have aside from that

Thanks so much for the rec. Also agree - Judith is by far her most interesting friend. I wish there was more about her...
Re her clothes - adorable BUT - almost every ep, I think her professional clothes are too short. I keep thinking she needs 4/5 more inches to not look like she's in baby!doll! clothes. Might just be an age thing.....
