So I've come to a decision
And that decision is that this 30 day meme thing is just going to be updated whenever I feel like it. And tonight I feel like it.
So far:
Day 01 - A show that never should have been canceled
And now:
Day 02 - A show you wish more people were watching
I'm gonna copy
eowyn_315 and say Being Erica. Which is hilarious because I decided to watch the show after reading her entry about how she wanted more people to watch the show, though I'd heard about it (vaguely) from
ineffort (yay for Canadian friends!) before that.
Premise: Erica's 32 and has just lost her job. Her love life isn't exactly working out, and she's at loose ends. In the middle of an awful day, she runs into a guy who calls himself Dr. Tom and who tells her he wants to help her. Even though she isn't really sure who this guy is or what's going on, she commits to therapy with him and gets a lot more than she bargained for.
He has her make a list of all of her regrets. And then? He sends her back in time to those moments of decision and lets her choose. She learns that decisions are delicate but powerful things, that the truth is complicated, that she's more than she thought she was. There's a whole lotta learnin' going on.
The show has some great relationships, too: with her family and friends and coworkers. (And a ship!) And Erica's lovable and relatable and generally cool. It's fun to spend time with her and watch her grow up and try to get her life back on track.
The show is a dramedy--think Gilmore Girls except less aggressively quirky and whimsical. But sort of that same tone. It's totally had me sobbing my eyes out a few times, but it's got lots of lighthearted moments as well. And at only two seasons of twelve episodes each, it should be easy for you to catch up on quickly.
A note, though: This show, sometimes it hurts. Both because I have an embarrassment squick the size of the galaxy (she gets sent back in time to high school. 'Nuff said, right?) and because I can really relate to the whole, "I'm stuck in a dead end job and this is so not how I thought my life would turn out. It sucks to be me." So there are moments that hit a bit close to home. Also, the show doesn't always take the route you think it's going to, and its honesty can be harsh but refreshing. It's worth the bite sometimes.
If none of that convinces you, there's also this pretty guy. Who looks like the lovechild of James Dean and James Marsters. And who sings. Yeah. New obsession. He gets his own tag and is the only person besides my future husband Enver who gets one. That's how taken I am with him.
(And when you watch the show you should join
berica_daily, if only for the tags. Yeah, this comm has the greatest tags I have ever seen.)
So get on that. I want y'all watching this show and writing me fic and making me icons, okay? This show does not have a fandom, and I want one. Make it happen.
And a bonus answer: Press Gang, though I'm terribly paranoid that one of y'all will watch it and not love it and then I'll start to question my own taste. I usually don't feel this way about a show. But you should watch it anyway! I maintain it's the greatest kids' show that can be enjoyed by grownups ever. Written by Steve Moffat, who's show-running Doctor Who right now and who wrote "Blink," my favorite episode from a show that's not by Joss Whedon.
I've rambled about it before, here (scroll down past talk of Leverage and Glee).

Also, my Being Erica comm is

I'm watching that comm now and when the new season starts, I'll join so I can do the discussion posts.
But seriously, you should check out the daily comm--I think my favorite tag is, "And then they had sex on a table." Or possibly, "Back when Ethan still had a personality."
I'm gonna write up a not-very-well-organized reaction post soon. You should enjoy it.

When season 2 finished, I went looking around and was so surprised that no one seemed to care about Erica/Kai, which for me was the ONLY 'ship on the show that I'd ever felt interested in (okay, so Josh confessing his love for her on the balcony twinged my 'ship meter a bit, but then he went back to being a jerk so that didn't work out). I'm not even sure he's coming back for season 3 (I actually don't think he is), but I'd love to see Erica and Kai try to actually have a relationship across time. Sort of like The Time Traveler's Wife, except not as squicky and less with the annoying ending.

Yeah, I totally agree about Erica/Kai being the only ship I care about. I hated Josh enough from the beginning (and straight through to the end) that I couldn't see that at all, but otherwise it probably would have pinged mine as well.
I read some spoilers that said he will be back? They could be wrong, though.

YES PLEASE. I also wouldn't say no to a spinoff, either. Of bad-boy!rock-star!Kai trying to work through his issues?

I only read spoilers after season 2 ended, which all pretty much said "his arc is finished". However, since the renewal I haven't even thought about it except to dread him not being there, so if they're actually interested in pursuing the story beyond where it ended in season 2? So much the better!
While I love Kai and think that the spin-off idea could be awesome, I'd rather just see him with Erica. Not even 'shippy stuff, I just love that he's the only one that she can really relate to. Dr Tom may know what she's going through, but Kai's going through The. Exact. Same. Thing. It's like they have a secret relationship! (One of my bullet-proof kinks, if you remember!)

I think my biggest thing is that I just don't care about Ethan and never have. So Kai was a sign from the heavens that this show really REALLY liked me.
This is exactly how I felt, too. I thought Ethan was cute at the beginning and liked him alright in the first season (just alright, though), but I liked him progressively less with each episode in S2. Kai, though, was exactly what I wanted. It was like the writers read my mind!
As soon as I figured out what was going on with his arc and how the season would likely end, I started dreading the next season thinking he wouldn't be back. So any hint that he's gonna be around in 3 just makes me want to weep with happy relief. ;D

YES. I agree!

Ethan is just so meh to me, and has been from day one. It's not that I don't/didn't like him, I just have no interest in seeing his and Erica's relationship explored. It's like a snooze fest to me, why would I want that explored?! So it wasn't until I'd seen season 2 and fallen for Kai that I purchased season 1 on DVD. Because then I had a reason to do so. (I seriously need to cap some episodes so that I can make BE icons.)

However, there are some people I'm never gonna find attractive--Marc Blucas, for instance. Even if Riley had actually been interesting, I still would never have found him attractive. The guy who plays Josh falls into that category, I think. Plus, he just reminds me of several douchebag frat-boy types I know. Ugh.
I just have no interest in seeing his and Erica's relationship explored. Agreed 100%.
And I would probably die of excitement if you made icons. I've had such trouble finding them!
no subject
I've made like four icons from avi caps.
But I don't really like any of them anymore. They're just not what I want for a BE icon, you know?

I know what you mean. I'm totally picky about icons. Ridiculously so. And you make some of my favs. Like this one.

GASP! Okay, I'll give you Logan - I thought Jason Dohring was funny-looking at first. But JM has always been hot to me, even before I watched BtVS.
I did think his hair was weird, though.

BtVS was the very first place I ever saw JM, and I think the horrible hair and the bad clothes just put me off. Plus, he looks really bad in S4. I say this as someone who now thinks he's ludicrously hot: S4 was a bad season for him. But I do think he's attractive quite apart from just playing Spike--I now think he's hot all the time!
I had that icon once upon a time!

Word.
And I liked Ethan in S1. I was happy when they got together, but definitely liked him less and less as the season went on. And of course, it didn't help that I was so totally all about Kai, and there is just no possible comparison in which Ethan wins. (Well, okay, there's the whole "actually from the same timeline as Erica," but pfffft.)
As soon as I figured out what was going on with his arc and how the season would likely end, I started dreading the next season thinking he wouldn't be back.
OMG yes, me too. I cried SO HARD when he sang in the season finale, because I KNEW IT WAS COMING. GAH!

Amen.
It's kind of worse when you know it's coming, isn't it?

Will definitely put it on my ginormous list of Shows To Watch.

You'd think that list would get shorter, wouldn't you? But it never, ever does.
Watch it sometime and report back!
