Ways Judaism and fandom are alike:
+ Lots of nerds
+ Lore
+ Hyperfixation on (a) particular text(s)
+ Fanwanking. Just so much fanwanking.
+ In theory: many interpretations are valid
+ In practice: lots of arguing
+ The arguing is sometimes constructive and exciting and other times...not
+ People love to tell each other that the other person's interpretation is wrong
+ Obsessed with hypotheticals
+ Like to explore missing scenes and flesh out minor characters aka midrash
+ Gatekeeping aka "You're not a real Jew/fan!"
+ Special language outsiders don't understand and holidays outsiders don't keep
+ A minority group scattered around the world
Please contribute more!
Honestly it's hilarious that many of the same things that draw me to fandom have drawn me to Judaism. The overlap in the Venn diagram is significant!

I'm more fannish-adjacent than fannish
Making texts feminist that are, on a pshat level, decidedly not.
Looking at individual word choices with a nicron-sized comb.
Jews/fans of color are marginalized :/

This made me laugh very hard!

Yes. This is unfortunately true as well.

- A sense of superiority derived from diving deeeeep into texts
- A contradictory attitude towards people outside the group: simultaneously "They could never understand" and "What are they saying about us now?"
- Bonding through in-jokes
