lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([btvs] not happy)

Um...

Since nobody else on lj seems to be talking about it, I guess I'll bring it up:

Does anybody have some thoughts on the newly revealed Buffy comic covers*?

I am...slightly perturbed. And then angry at myself for caring. BUT I CAN'T HELP IT, DAMNIT! My face? Looked like Bob's in my moodtheme. Just like that. And in case you were wondering, it's not the possible revelation of the identity of Twilight that bothers me. It's the thing I refer to in my tags.... Although even though I'm not reading the comics, that would be a stupid, stupid revelation. Stupid.

Emmie? Hon? Wanna explain this one for me?

*spoilers liek woah

There she is! *was waiting for you*

Haha! I lovelovelove that your first thought was about TYSK. I admit--it definitely popped into my head, even if my first thought was, "Oh my shipper heart is broken!" and then, "Wait. It can't honestly be Angel."

Yeah, there's no way it can actually be true that he is Twilight. That would be awful and stupid. I think there must be something else going on.

All I can say is that the comics don't always depict exactly what's happening in the story.
Yeah, I feel like there have been times when people freaked out before about things that turned out not to be at all what they looked like. I assume that's what's going on here.

But I think what we can say is that Angel is coming into Season 8. Not flashback!Angel or dream!Angel, but present day Angel. I know I have no right to demand things, especially since I'm not actually reading S8, but I feel like if they do bring Angel around, then they'll have to address whether Buffy knows that Spike's alive. It would be glaringly obvious if they didn't.

I'm here! Laptop still broken though so this is the soonest I could get online on my roomie's computer.

I totally went "Okay, Angel is Twilight. So what does this mean for TYSK?" First thought. Trufax.

Angel's been on my betting card's #1 spot for Twilight for a long while now, but this depiction of Buffy kissing Twilight and being oh so happy that it's Angel - erm... wha huh? I think this portrayal has got to be the twist because of Buffy's shocked expression in the previous issue's cover. She was hurt and in pain there. This comical romance - well, I imagine it's simply that. An ironic showing of romantic love where as underneath the cover, within the story, there lies betrayal and lies.

So there's gotta be more to it. You don't reveal that Angel has been lurking and manipulating Buffy all Season and then she jumps his bones. Because OOC much? Recall how tiffed Buffy got over Pangs then magnify it by a 1000 and also make Angel a villain while still having a soul. Yeah. So the covers can't be straight interpretation of the story within.

And I've gotta say, considering how Joss ended BtVS by giving both B/A and Spuffy their dues, only bringing back Angel would be like a slap in the face. Especially since Spike and Angel are attached at the hip - both in the ANGEL comics and in previous Season 8 stuff (Buffy's dreams of both of them - they're always together).

Ha! No pressure, hon; I just knew yours would be the most informed opinion!

And anything that gets you thinking about TYSK is fine by me!

Really? I don't get it. What's his motivation? Why would he be causing the deaths of Slayers? Does Joss really want to go there? And if Spike does show up, what's his moral stance about the whole thing? And yes, exactly: Buffy will not take this news lightly.

I know I've asked you this like a gazillion times, but I can never keep it straight. S8 is set a couple of years after S7, right? (I can't remember exactly how many.) The whole of A:AtF is set in like five seconds immediately after NFA. I know that After the Fall is over, and they've got more comics going on now with Dark Horse. So have they caught up timeline wise with S8? Or is S8 still a couple of years in the future for the Angelverse? And how would these two affect each other?

I feel like I'm always asking you to explain comic-y stuff to me, and I feel like I should either ignore it completely or educate myself instead of mooching off of you!

Especially since Spike and Angel are attached at the hip - both in the ANGEL comics and in previous Season 8 stuff (Buffy's dreams of both of them - they're always together). I love that. A lot.

I'm your resident comic expert! :)

Season 8 #1 starts a year and a half post-Chosen. And yeah, After the Fall exists all within a matter of moments following Not Fade Away. Thing is - IDW hasn't caught up to the Season 8 comics. So the motivation for Angel-as-Twilight hasn't been established yet. And I don't think Joss is overly concerned with lining up his story with IDW's. I think he's co-opted Angel for Season 8 and I speculated in the past that Joss helped out with AtF as a behind-the-scenes deal so that he could use Angel (and Spike) in Season 8. The Angel license IDW owns would prevent him from doing so, but because he loaned them his name (which equals sales) and helped plot out After the Fall (which is the only truly godo thing they have going imo), he earned back the usage of some choice characters. So far, Angel appears to be used here. Not sure who else might appear. I'm hoping for Spike and I'm hoping it's in the final five issues written by Joss. Because Spike!Joss is my favorite Joss - see: Hell's Bells cute scene, end of Beneath You, The Gift, Once More With Feeling, Chosen, even back in Becoming and on and on.

Okay, so they haven't caught up. But yeah, even if they had: Joss probably wouldn't care. You know how he is. *is frustrated with him*

That's really interesting, your behind-the-scenes musings. I bet you're right.

Oh, I love Spike!Joss! And gah, that scene in Hell's Bells just kills me. Kills me dead.

How many more comics are there?

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-01-08 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eleven comics left! #31 comes out next Wednesday.

Spike!Joss is the best and I love that scene. I only wish Joss had thought to rewrite As You Were the way he rewrote Hell's Bell's and Beneath You.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-01-08 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
How many more months do you think that'll take? Another year? ;)

OMG YES. He totally could have salvaged something from that mess. Oh, Doug Petrie! You gave us "Fool for Love"! I will never understand how you could also produce "As You Were," even accounting for your massive mancrush on Blucas!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-01-08 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Joss was doing some heavy lifting on Fool For Love, though. Because he had to elaborately connect Fool For Love with Darla over on AtS. So he was working both stories hardcore there. And he also is the type to give Spike a poetic background because 1) he loves poetry (witness Shakespeare readings and Illyria speech) and 2) it makes Spike sympathetic which is something Petrie doesn't really like doing. I'm recalling how Petrie didn't want to give Spike the 007 escape from the Initiative because it made him look like the hero and both Joss and Jane E. said that in that moment, Spike was the hero.

Speaking of Illyria, Joss would come in to write almost all of the Wesley/Illyria scenes but didn't take a writer's credit. So yeah, wouldn't surprise me if much of what we love about Fool For Love was Joss-lead-and-inspired.

ETA: Sorry I keep editing! I think we have one more year left of the comics.

I figured that he did indeed have probably something to do with it, but I like to give Petrie the benefit of the doubt since we don't know which exact scenes were doctored, you know? But yeah: you're probably right.

And that's yet another reason to love Jane E. What a cool lady. I covet her life.

Oh, Joss so would write the Wes/Illyria stuff. I love the Wes/Illyria stuff almost as much as I love Wes/Lilah. And almost as much as I hate Wes/Fred. Which is strange, because I don't have a lot of intense feelings about Wes as a character, and I feel like I'm the only one.

[ETA] It's cool! Wow. And he's still talking about S9. Ambitious man.

Thanks for the info, love! You're a fount of knowledge!
