Vienna Teng is a genre writer. She just happens write songs instead of stories.

Songs like "The Hymn of Acxiom" and "No Gringo" and "Radio" are all speculative fiction. "Blue Caravan" is somehow a historical drama. "In Another Life" is one of those twisty reincarnation romances that masquerade as literary fiction because the prose is beautiful. "My Medea" is one of those retellings of ancient myths that are so hot right now. If "Watershed" were a short story, it would be taught in scifi classes at Ivy League colleges.

And every time I listen to "Whatever You Want" song, I realize it's the plot of a Korean melodrama. And I want that Kdrama.

Yes, this. Especially "Whatever you want."

It's so clear in my head! The Company Man and the Chaebol's Wife are the ultimate slowburn otp! For the first, like, ten years, they never say a word to each other. They just Look At Each Other whenever they happen to be in the same room. Then something happens where Company Man has to spend actual time with his boss's wife and they fall madly in love, but they never say a word about it or act on it because they know both of their lives depend on not pissing off Chaebol Dude. But they start plotting, very, very carefully, and finally after they expose his corruption and bring him down, he goes to jail, she gets a divorce and all the money, and Company Man and Chaebol's Wife are free to be together! It would be so hot and romantic!

I would watch that in a heartbeat.

I want it so badly! I am so sad no one's ever going to make it!

I know the geography doesn't actually work, Ritter is talking about crossing a different border, but I headcanon "No Gringo" as happening in the same world as Josh Ritter's "Wings"

my brain keeps rotating it to try to figure out how it fits into the Untamed though - the theme of people who have been overlooked or dismissed as unimportant turning out to have power of their own is definitely a throughline in both song and show, but I can't get the exact characters to match!

Haha, you're welcome! Whenever I listen to it, I see it playing out in full color in front of my eyes. I had never understood the people who request songs for Yuletide--no judgment, just not my thing--but that one in particular? Yeah, I ship it!

I kind of want to see this song as Jin Guangyao/Qin Su, tbh, in an au where Qin Su is allowed to have, like, outward-directed agency. With all of jgy's schemes to give himself ultimate power in the jianghu, and qs trying to undermine her husband while still seeming to be the perfect wife on the surface.
