Dollhouse-shaped thoughts

And they are conflicted.

Let's get the obligatory flail out of the way, okay?

OMG ENVER! BEING AN ECCENTRIC PSYCHIATRIST/DOCTOR WHATEVER I DON'T EVEN KNOW BUT HE WAS SO WONDERFULLY NEUROTIC AND HE SAID SIERRA WAS NAUGHTY AND KNOWS IT AND THEN SHE GAVE HIM A SULTRY LOOK AND WAS A FEMME FATALE AND THEY WERE MAKING OUT WHEN THEY WERE DOCTORS AND DID I MENTION THAT ENVER IS A GENIUS?

Not enough Victor! Not enough Sierra! Not enough of them together!

Now that that's out of the way, we can get to the actual coherent stuff.

1. Is it just me or did Meet Jane Doe really, really not feel like Dollhouse? And it didn't feel connected to A Love Supreme at all? And neither of them really felt like the previous two Denisof-y episodes? And nothing's been as good as Belonging made me think it would be?
2. Am I seriously supposed to believe that Echo's all in love with Ballard and this is not creepy? I mean, sure, props to him for refusing to consummate it, but HE IS A CREEPER. I am not won over by this. And the big emotional moment in ALS is supposed to based on her feelings for him? DO NOT WANT.
3. ALPHA!!!! IN A CRAZY SUUUUUIT!!! Oh, Alan Tudyk. Never, ever stop being in everything. You are a god among men. Blow things up always.
4. Alpha = Bennett? Little bit? They're scary similar to me.
5. Topher waxing all depressed about how he was omg!betrayed by Bennett was hilarious. And also proved to me that he has woman issues. I'm convinced that he's probably a Nice Guy.
6. Topher was really the only thing I liked in Meet Jane Doe. I'm becoming more fond of him with every episode. I likes him a lot.
7. The fact that he was the one who was the one who figured out what Rossum was up to and was dedicated to them not being able to do it and was smart enough to design it on his own and then hide made my whole day. GO TOPHER. (Yes, [livejournal.com profile] snickfic, I share your love for him.)
8. I really, really do like what they're doing with Echo. I do not, however, like the whole "Echo is special zomg!!!1!" meme that's going on. There better be a reason she's special or I shall be greatly displeased.
9. I was super, super excited to see Patton Oswalt again, but he was not used nearly as well as he should have been. Anyone could have played that part, as opposed to his bit in MotS, which was epic.
10. I hate what they're doing to Adelle. Hate it. She's not felt Adelle-y to me lately, and I miss her Adelle-y-ness. I'm really attached to the whole "my bad guys are better than your bad guys" feel that we've had about the LA dollhouse so far. This was a departure from that, unless she's really just playing everyone, which she might well be. But her turn around? Felt too rushed to me to be genuine; I didn't believe it. I don't know; all this may or may not be good character development; I can't tell because I just dislike it so much.
11. When are we going to have a Victor-background episode in which I can FIND OUT HIS NAME?
12. Maurissa was in the episode again! I like her!
13. Did anybody else feel like they tried to cram too much stuff into these episodes? They felt rushed. CURSE YOU, FOX.

* Does anybody have a link to next week's promos? Pretty, pretty please?

* Also! I saw Invictus last night! For free! With my friend from South Africa! Which was super useful as she could explain things to me! And did! And have I ever mentioned my fondness for rugby? I hate sports in general, but I looove rugby, though I do not follow it and know little about it. And I may have flailed with joy when the All-Blacks in the movie did their war dance/cheer thing, even if I have major cultural appropriation objections to it and then I felt guilty. But the movie was good! And apparently the accents were "impeccable," says said friend. And Morgan Freeman did a scary-good Nelson Mandela imitation. And Matt Damon's so likable! And the supporting characters were excellently drawn--most of them security personnel, and they were fab. And Martha Jones' mama was in it! AND RUGBY.

* AND A TRAILER. GARY OLDMAN AND MILA KUNIS (!) IN A POST-APOCALYPTIC MOVIE! BLOWING THINGS UP! YES PLEASE! I mean, I like Denzel Washington a ton, but he's not usually enough to get me really worked up about a movie on his own. The rest of the cast, though? YES PLEASE.

* My parents and I sat down and made a budget for me today, as I will shortly be moving out on my own (more on this anon). It was rather hellish, and the conclusion I arrived at is that life is stupid.

* I think I've finally gotten all my notifications? So I can catch up on replies soon? Hopefully? Be on the lookout for them!

"I'm obsolete - like old people - and Blockbuster"

That was such a great line! The Blockbuster part just made it!

Thank you so very much! The Attic! I've been waiting for this for so long!

Also...I might have to have that icon. VICTOR! *huggles him*

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I found these eps SO CONFUSING and really disconnected from any of the DC stuff. Bah. And I am so freaking annoyed by this time gap of three months. When did Echo go from being blank and uncomprehending to the fully aware and able SuperEcho we saw in Omega?

When are we going to have a Victor-background episode in which I can FIND OUT HIS NAME?

I swear to God this is coming next week. Check out the summary for the first hour:

Victor's contract with the Dollhouse expires. As he attempts to integrate into the outside world, his military past threatens his future with Sierra.

SERIOUSLY THERE IS NO WAY THEY CAN DO THAT WITHOUT REVEALING HIS NAME, RIGHT?

Amen amen amen to your entire first paragraph. I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

OMGOMGOMG!!!! They are writing this episode for MEEEEE!!!! Victor! And Sierra! And Victor/Sierra! AND HIS NAME!!! *dies of excitement*

[identity profile] madcap-shiny.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I know she's never really blank, but she still had that loopy "ask the car to go and the ATM machine to give money" deal going where she's self-aware but still in bison mode, so to speak. AND THEN WE JUMP TO HER BEING TOTALLY ON TOP OF IT ALL, IF A LITTLE GLITCHY AT TIMES. It's like the reverse of Omega when we went from SuperEcho to seeing her back in the chair again with no explanation as to why or how that went down when she swore to leave the Dollhouse. (I'm still mad about that, too, incidentally. Did Ballard knock her out and carry her back or something?)

I'M EXCITED FOR REALSIES. VICTOR SPOTLIGHT EPISODE = ENVER DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST, AND A HELPING OF SIERRA ON THE SIDE IS NOT BAD NEWS AT ALL.

Exactly. And then they tried to explain it with "After I beat up the sheriff, it all started happening" and that kinda lame metaphor of shells on the beach, but we didn't see that. If you have to tell us after the fact, you're doing it wrong. They've been sloppy, and I dislike sloppiness.

VICTOR SPOTLIGHT EPISODE = ENVER DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST, AND A HELPING OF SIERRA ON THE SIDE IS NOT BAD NEWS AT ALL. YES YES YEEESSSS. What am I going to do when he's not on my TV set anymore?

that trailer! i love post-apocalypse stuff! om nom nommy! denzel washington looks REALLY GOOD in it too - and i generally dgaf about him either way. interesting interesting - but there's a lot of god there. god and i don't get along.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Apocalypses are my LOVE. And yes re: Denzel looking good!

God and I do get along, but faux!God-stuff and I don't, which is what this looks like it's going to be. However: apocalypse. Mila Kunis. Gary Oldman. I shall be seeing it unless I hear that it's awful.

the conclusion I arrived at is that life is stupid

Yep, I have concluded that.

I'm sooo behind on comments...

I'm glad someone else agrees with me.

Topher was awesome. He and Alpha were the best things about those episodes.

I have to admit that I like the whole Paul/Echo thing because it's screwed up and creepy. I like that, despite Paul self righteousness that he's not perfect, and he's messed up, and his intentions are obviously skewed a little bit because of his own desires. That being said, I didn't like how they went about it. I don't know, I just thought it felt far too rushed. (perhaps because of the cramming. Yes, damn you Fox!) And I didn't like that Echo was just suddenly in love with him, I would have preferred a strong friendship, with definite hints at it, and then him like, obviously wanting her but being in denial about it because she's not Caroline or something. I don't know. I liked the idea before these episodes, but I didn't like how they were dealt with in these.

Adelle is pissing me off. Mostly because I expected more from her. I expected her to always have some sort of plan, even if it wasn't full proof, and I always liked that she always thought what she was doing was for the good of everyone else, even if it didn't seem that way. I definitely agree with Boyd when he made that comment about "the Adelle I knew..."

However, I can definitely see how the relationship we saw in Epitaph One between Adelle and Topher might form from this. He breaks down from his guilt in having created the technology, and maybe the only reason she doesn't break down for giving up the plans was the guilt she also has for doing that to him, so she cares for him. In any case, I've always liked the relationship between Topher and Adelle, and it was painful to see them at such odds during these episodes.

Exactly. I'm unafraid of the creepy--I mean, I love S6!Spuffy!--but I felt like we were supposed to believe that they were so in looooove. And I don't.

I think Adelle's taken a turn for the better these last few episodes, but I also feel like her characterization this season has been super inconsistent.

In any case, I've always liked the relationship between Topher and Adelle, and it was painful to see them at such odds during these episodes.
Amen.

Rugby Movies

[identity profile] gingerwall.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay rugby! First we get approved as a olympic sport, and now a movie with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon?! Seriously, life is too good to be true for a rugger right now.

And I can't find a copy of the exact interview I was reading (heard on NPR?) before, but apparently Morgan Freeman and Nelson Mandela are actually kind of friends, and the former has been waiting to play the latter in a movie for a while. http://www.theloop21.com/news/interview-morgan-freeman-and-his-role-invictus

God, I cannot believe I am recommending that someone actually watch this movie, BUT... if you really like rugby and rugby movies as much as you say, you should check out Forever Strong. It's your basic teen trash high school football movie - but with rugby instead and there's plenty of culturally inappropriate-yet-delightful footage of white people doing the Haka.

Thank you so much forthe rec! I'll check it out if I can--you're too sweet!

And yeah, I love that Nelson Mandela always wanted Morgan Freeman to play him. It's super adorable.
