Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.
But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.
Or,
Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.
He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.
Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.
Chapter Summary: There are shadows within shadows, and Obi-Wan is too worried about Bail to let things slide, even if Palpatine has disappeared. The Sith Master is still out there and he might be looking at a scion of a powerful Elder House to bring his agenda of death and destruction to fruition.
So it’s time to leave the security of the Temple and done a mask of sorts, to rescue a friend if the friend needs rescuing. But first, a whole lot of mission prep. So nothing goes wrong.
Yeah, right?

[food] ... :|
Wagamama have once again Done The Thing, by which I mean: the reliable Always Food For Alexes thing they've been doing for the last little while has rotated back off their menu.
The thing I tried instead today was sufficiently food for me to finish the rice but not sufficiently food for me to finish all of the toppings; I am suspicious of pho in "a clear yuzu broth" (which is not the same thing as "I won't try it").
(This is a Thing they have now done Twice, the first time about 15 years ago, and YES I AM HOLDING A GRUDGE.)

Connecticut has no Ocean

Image: whaling ship in the grey, cold rain
Shawn and I have made this trip to Connecticut (and back again) five times. Once to move Mason in, and then four times now to move him out. We have never, ever been able to see anything more off the coast of Connecticut than mist. I was pretty sure that the whole fog-of-nothingness/evil was supposed to be a Stephen King thing for Maine, not Connecticut, but here we are, our fifth trip, and there is clearly NO OCEAN OFF THE COAST. It is all greyness and LIES.
But, we managed a fun sight seeing trip anyway.
We went to Mystic, CT, bringing along with us both Mason and his partner Jas.

Mason, our grad, (left) and Jas (right) at the Black Sheep in Nantic, CT.
The Seaport Museum was probably an interesting choice given the foul weather, and, honestly, I would have hoped that pouring rain would mean that we'd have the place to ourselves. No, every school group in the history of school groups were all there, making trying to get into the litttle faux village shops somewhat of a crapshoot. It was a lovely little space, though. Mason and I explored the whaling ship and I got inspired to do a better job explaining how cramped berths on sailing ships (in my case space ships) can be.
I'm going to say, however, that my favorite thing was seeing a family of geese and their three little goslings.
And getting to see Mason hanging out with the person he calls "love."
We did not get any packing done today, but the four of us got very moist and a little cross, so it's back to the AirBnB for us. Clothes are in the dryer and my wet toeies are tucked under the covers. We are giving up for the day, with only dinner out for plans. I wish we'd had better weather, but we had excellent company and that's what it's all about.

Travel
My boss has approved the time off, so the only uncertainties now are 1) will the economy remain stable enough that I have the money, 2) will the country remain stable enough that I feel safe leaving and trying to re-enter with brown skin.
If both of those conditions are met, here's what I'm planning!
April 18-May 10 (3 weeks)
My partner and I meet up in Europe. We do London, then Paris, then Berlin. I would like to visit some archives in each of those cities and inspect some materials that are too expensive to order as scans, and do some tourism.
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Maybe my partner goes to Bonn for some Beethoven tourism, not sure.
Additional possibilities if I have extra time:
Dresden, for the archives. (Yes, I know, normal people go to Dresden for the art and architecture. :P)
Munich: I've been twice, but this time Selena can show me around!
Vienna: I've been, but a close friend I haven't seen in over 10 years lives there, and I could visit the Natural History Museum again with my improved knowledge of geology. My friend says she might come to Munich if I'm there, though, so maybe we'll do that.
July 3 - July 26 (3 weeks)
BFF and I go to Europe. He rents a car, and we drive around to more rural places. As much hiking as my body will allow!
I'm not sure what order we'll travel in or how many sites we'll get to, but high on my wishlist are:
Domremy-la-Pucelle, tiny village in rural France where Joan of Arc was born.
Cirey, where Emilie du Chatelet (pictured in icon) lived with Voltaire.
Swiss Alps hiking. First choice: Tomasee, source of the
Oxford: Tolkien's grave, and the pub where the Inklings met, the the Eagle and Child aka Bird and Baby. Maybe the Bodleian! (So many museums, so little time.)
York Minster. Architecture! Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell!
Haworth Parsonage. Brontes!
Lake District: Hiking! My favorite ultrarunners think it's awesome, and who am I to question them.
Culloden: Jacobites!
Clava Cairns: Bronze Age burial site near Culloden, so why not!
Glencoe: Jacobites and hiking!
Orkney: Pleeeease let me have time for Orkney, I had such plans for 2018 when my last Europe trip got canceled.
Additional possibilities if I have extra time:
The source of the Danube. (I tried writing "Donauquelle", but I stopped myself. :P)
Steinsfurt, where Fritz tried and failed to escape from his father.
Masevaux, the estate in France he was trying to escape to. (Rottembourg's, for all two of you who know who that is.)
The Giant's Causeway, in Northern Ireland. Geology!
So! I need a stable country and a stable economy. *gives the universe a firm stare*

Recent reading: Thrawn trilogy
Back then, I read the first book and liked it a lot. Only, with my tabletop RPG group we were playing Star Wars (Edge of the Empire, is the name of the rpg system): a campaign modeled on the Thrawn trilogy, in which we played a group of Imperials trying to hold the Empire together and build our own faction in it. We slotted into the story as an additional support/commando group for Thrawn, and I didn't want to know the plot of the original story. It was fun to play the bad guys for once, we certainly managed to make things more difficult for our original trilogy characters... Anyway, we played for a few years and I didn't want to read the trilogy immediately afterwards, so it slipped my mind for a few more years.
Maybe it's because I haven't read many multi-POV books in the last few years, so there's not much to compare it with. If anything, the Expanse books come close in that regard. But what struck me was how interestingly the narrative was woven from a logistics viewpoint, how the characters and ships end up in the place where something happens, almost at the same time. How it's partly the circumstances and partly their own decisions that bring them there, some of which are based on correct, and others on faulty assumptions. Things like the part in which Thrawn is on Honogr at the same time as Leia, but he's not looking for her there (much), he thinks she's somewhere else. Or how the feint Wedge does with Aves to make him believe they're on a wholly different planet ends up the thing that brings Karrde's group to the right place at the right time, which again is what gives the Republic the decisive edge over Thrawn's forces.
It's a really interesting exercise in plotting.
Also I like Thrawn as a villain - he's just actually good enough to make it believable to the readers and his subordinates that he can pull off the impossible, but that also masks his weak spots that end up becoming his demise.
I'm not convinced of the whole "art from the enemy's culture determines their actions" approach for real - it makes a fun literary device, it gives a face to his ability to predict his opponent's actions.
If taken at face value, it says that "culture" is the most determining factor of personality which is an ... interesting ... take because it needs strong regional cultures that then need to stay as they are. Art reaches back decades and centuries and of course you can see cultural trends if you look at all that, but it won't tell you the course of action another person is going to take. And the galaxy of Star Wars in that time does have some strong and isolated local cultures, but also, there's a recent Republic and Empire that spanned wide enough to have some degree of (let's call it) globalization, which may flatten these cultural identities. For example, I'm not convinced that a character like Bel Iblis would still be predominantly "Corellian" just because he once grew up there, when he hasn't lived surrounded by this culture for decades, and had lots of other influences. Sure, your cultural background says a lot about how you see the world, how you relate to it. But to actually predict the actions of an individual based on that seems a bit reductive. But seeing it as a plot device, I can suspend my disbelief well enough to enjoy Thrawn as a character a lot.
I don't know much about combat tactics, but the battle descriptions were interesting. It seems I have to read more space operas and military scifi - I just don't know how to find that in a way that isn't actually pro-military because I'm not sure I want to read that.
It was nice to see an idea of who Luke, Leia, Hand, Chewie & co could become in the future. Leia's Jedi training was especially interesting. She is a quite forceful personality and it was very engaging to see her engage with her inner fury, and redirect it. She is a very different Jedi to Luke, and it was nice to see that.
I liked seeing Lando being drawn into co-saving the fate of the galaxy once more, even though all he wants is to take care of his company/town/people.
The most interesting character was Mara Jade, especially in ... no, in all character constellations I saw her. With Talon Karrde, I like the growing loyalty between them, especially from Karrde towards Mara. With Luke, of course, the whole "getting to know your enemy and recognizing he's not actually your enemy" thing. With Leia, the careful allies they become over Luke. And of course her own journey of becoming her own person, free from the chains that kept her - ha, without even using passion, strength, power and victory to break them.
That was a very enjoyable read, and even though I had a lot of fun playing an Imperial secret agent turned Sith apprentice in an Empire lead first by Thrawn and then, after his death, by Imperator Mara Jade, back in the day, I do like the actual story of all the characters a lot more.

"A Killing Cold" by Kate Alice Marshal
This feels like Beware the Woman and Ready or Not put together in a really good way. The characters are all interesting and flawed and make this fun to read. The slow revealing of the truth, of all the connections, worked really well at the pace we got.
I loved the themes, the setting, the mood. The dialogues worked well, too, and the connections between the people. Also, I liked how the book gave people some grace despite their privileges and shortcomings.
The whole set-up the story needed to work feels a bit far-fetched but I really didn't mind because I liked the story so much and it didn't destroy the twists and reveals.

Some reading related stuff
Rosmei has released cover art for The Creator's Grace, which hopefully means preorders aren't too far away. I wish I liked the art more - it feels a bit generic to me (it might just be that I'm comparing it to the cool looking art I've seen for the audio drama).
I seem to be bit and miss with novellas at the moment - I'm kinda sad Brighter than Scale, Swifter than Flame by Neon Yang didn't really work for me (especially since I enjoyed their Tensorate novellas), but I did really like The River Has Roots by Amal El- Mohtar.

Sogdians on the Silk Road
For the past week, I have been preparing a major post on Middle Iranian and associated peoples who transited and traded across Eurasia during the Middle Ages, so it was fortuitous that I received the following photograph from Hiroshi Kumamoto:
Xinhua News Agency//Getty Images
Archaeologists Found Someone They Never Expected in an Ancient Chinese Tomb: a Blonde Man
The discovery reveals an unexpected connection to the ancient Silk Road.
By Tim Newcomb Popular Mechanics (May 10, 2025)
Place:
Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province
It shows a Sogdian camelteer and horse groom, typical types of expertise of the Sogdians, who were merchants par excellence on the medieval Eurasian trade routes. The man's blond hair doesn't surprise me in the slightest, because I have seen it in Central Asian mummies and their descendants in Eastern Central Asia (ECA, aka Xinjiang), Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan,Tajikistan, etc., not to mention countless historical visual materials from the medieval period.
For a small foretaste of what's in store for the Sogdians in medieval Korea that will be part of the forthcoming post on Sogdians and associated peoples on the Silk Road, see "The Eastern end of the Silk Road in Silla", also here.
