Today I was suddenly overcome with an intense yearning for the glory days of livejournal icons. When people made the most beautiful little 100x100 works of art. And it was so exciting to see new posts in your favorite icon journals! And I paid all that money to have like 150 icons and I had one for every possible mood or interest! Oh halcyon days!

I looked back through a whole bunch of them I saved on my removable harddrive and was transported back. They really are as gorgeous as I remember. So I revived a few of those, made a bunch more and now I have icons here.

Of course now I want to get a paid account so I can have more icons. But I need to see if I'm actually going to use these like I used to before I go spending money on more.

(Did I do this instead of working on the aforementioned case study thingie? You bet I did.)

Ohh, you have so many shiny new icons! Very pretty! (And a great way to procrastinate, for sure!)

And yes, those were the good old days. I was never good at making icons, but always liked it. In fact, some of the ones I use now are from my LJ days! :D

LJ was truly the golden age! It's such a shame that icon-making has disappeared!

I love icons so much! It was a great joy to come back to DW and have multiple icons again!!!

Looking back at the ones I'd saved, I was really just so impressed by how gorgeous they were?

And often so detailed! Not just a screenshot, but whole works of art! This Raven (The 100) one is like that, though more recent that LJ.

I know! I can tweak a screencap to make the coloring a little better, but I can't do the full-on art the way those people can/could.

I hear you, and man it is so hard to find nice icons for new properties these days. Or even old properties - I've just gone on a deep dive through LJ to try and find Oasis icons, because there isn't a single one on all of DW that turns up via the search. But just in general, people don't even seem to try anymore? I shouldn't talk because I have no graphics skills myself, but on tumblr, a person cut out and set against a solid color background is the height of graphics sophistication. Woe. :(

Did you have any luck finding any Oasis ones on LJ?

Honestly, LJ icon-making was an extraordinary art form. The time and effort people put into making those little boxes was unbelievable. And they were so so beautiful! I'm kind of heartbroken at the death of that particular art form.

I found ONE post with nine icons on it, but fortunately I liked them okay, so, Oasis icons achieved!

Can I ask how your mom is doing?

I felt weird talking about it here in a public post, but it motivated me to finally post about it on my journal, here.

Oh! Sorry! I didn't even think about it being a public post! I definitely apologize for that.

I feel this journey IN MY SOUL. There will never be a higher form of communication than LJ icons!

I wish we could use them on every internet site!

What an excellent procrastination technique. Yes, it was a whole other paratextual communication medium!

It's been years since I've made any, but I do enjoy it so much!
