Got my first piece of graded coursework back! And I did well! It's a grade that if I got it in the States, I would be horrified, but here it's very respectable, so I'm pleased. The remarks were good, though one of them was like, "Did you not have thoughts on ____?" and I'm like YES I had thoughts on that, I had so many thoughts on that, but you only gave me one thousand words to work with!!!

Anyway, that's a relief, though not a huge one because I thought it was a very easy assignment. The second one--much, much more difficult--was due today, but the posting date for grades on that one says it'll be the 17th of December before we hear about them, which is ridiculous.

Yay, good job!! Also, now I’m curious! How is grading different there?

So apparently it goes like this:
70% and above: Distinction
60-69%: Merit
50-59%: Pass
0-49%: Fail

But like they actually stick to that? Like apparently a 70 is a good grade and people rarely make above an 80 on anything at all? Like I have a very smart friend here who made one grade above an 80 in the entirety of her undergrad years. So since I got above a 70%, it's like an A?

Honestly, that makes so much more sense than our grading system! Especially since I became someone who grades things, I’ve always felt weird about 50 and 0 meaning the same thing!! (Which, okay, they are lumped together in what you described too, but at least there’s more variety beyond that score!)

It does! And it's standardized across the country, so everyone knows what the grades actually mean. It's weird getting used to, but it's definitely far more sense-making.

Yeah, I really like how clear everything is. They break everything down for the papers too, "Correct citations will count for 10%, analysis of this will count for 25%, a case study will count for 20%." It's much, much more systematized than I'm used to.
