it's the most wonderful time of the year, actually

I just made my Yuletide noms, squeaking in with like two hours left before the deadline, and I really wish there was a way you could see what has been approved before you do it, you know?

After all that worrying about it, I did it on the fly, and actually that was probably the best thing to do, because the only thing I absolutely knew I wanted to request was Shut Up Flower Boy Band (I want something involving Ji Hyuk, Su Ah, Hyun Soo and/or Ye Rim in any combination at all). I decided to go with one book and one Western TV show to round out my noms, and since the book I really want fic on (M.M. Kaye's out of print 600 page epic Shadow of the Moon) I know I will never get fic on, I went with Mara Daughter of the Nile aka the book I have read most often in my life aka the book that dominated my middle and high school years. For TV show I selected Designing Women, though I'm hoping/assuming that Happy Endings got nommed because I might ask for Jane/Brad fic because PERFECT TELEVISION MARRIEDS.

And now that I think about it, I wish I'd nommed The Thin Man because it occurs to me that what I really want is Nick and Nora fic. But it's too late now, I suppose. Oh, well.

[eta] Anybody with an AO3 account who isn't participating this year who would be willing to nominate it for me?

Oh man, I read Shadow of the Moon over and over as a teenager. Winter and Alex Forever! Also, I loved most of Kaye's other books, especially Trade Winds, which looking back on it now I realize had a "romantic" rape scene between the hero and heroine, but I loved it anyway. She wrote a number of mystery novels all set in different parts of the world - Death in Berlin, Death in Zanzibar, etc. that I gobbled up. Strangely enough, the one book by her I could never quite get through was The Far Pavilions, which is the most famous one she wrote and the only one that is probably still in print.

Alex and River are my FAVORITES FOREVER.

I also have a lot of fondness for Trade Winds, despite the "romantic" rape. It's so lovely other than that!

Her Death books are still in print, I think, but I haven't read them. I've been working my way through The Far Pavilions for a year or two now (seriously), but I haven't finished it yet, either. It's got some stuff I love, but I feel like her other books are superior. Oh, well.

Yay for mutual love!
