Dear people-who-delete-their-journals,

Why do you have to do this to me? Why can't you just flock the whole thing except for your fic? WHY DO YOU TAKE THE PRETTY FIC AWAY FROM ME?

Heartbrokenly yours,

Lauren

Dear readers,

I make this promise to you: I won't delete any of my fic unless it's necessary because I'm turning it into something to publish (which probably won't happen, because I don't tend to write things it's easy to file the serial numbers off of). I will not cause you this deep existential distress I am currently feeling.

Love and hugs and kisses,

Lauren

:((((((

I'm sorry about the existential crisis! And I support the idea of you never deleting your lj. NEVER LEAVE ME!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I WOULD NEVER. YOU'RE STUCK WITH ME.

Ugh, I hate this, too. And I know I shouldn't, because entitled much? It's their journal. But I can't help it. Fic, and especially journals that had commentfic memes or large fandom discussions or great meta, I just get so upset when they're gone.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, exactly. Like, I really don't want to be that entitled person, and I'm all for people erasing their internet footprints if that's what they want to do. But...can't they archive their stufff somewhere else before they do? Please? Pretty please?

I've just taken to saving every fanfic that I might want to revisit, ever.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's smart. I have them all in saved in delicious or favorites on the sites or whatever, but I should probably just buy a new external harddrive and save everything ever to it. *sigh*

I would like to point out that Pinboard offers a service where, for $25 a year, they'll keep archived copies of ALL YOUR BOOKMARKED PAGES. It's not something I've done, but it's tempting.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
ARE YOU SERIOUS.

I am doing that. I'll have to clear out a bunch of the useless bookmarks I already have and add a ton more but I AM DOING THAT. It's totally worth $25 to me. Bless you!

All my dreams.

[identity profile] pennydrdful.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh! I hate it when people suddenly decide to do that. I mean, I completely understand that it's their decision but... THE FIC.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My feelings EXACTLY.

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I thankfully have never come across this problem (though I am leaning towards staying clear of unfinished pieces because MY HEART cannot withstand the wait (I found an Enchanted AU on fanfic and lordy... there hasn't been an update in months!))

In other news:

Dearest, Darlingest You:

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE ME!

Sincerely,

Kelsey

You are so lucky! I wish I had never known the taste of this particular flavor of despair.

But I hear you about unfinished pieces. AND YET SOME OF THEM ARE MY FAVORITES. I just don't know what to do!

Favoritest Kelsey,

I WOULD NEVER.

Love,

Lauren

HUGS! I'm so sorry! It sounds traumatizing!

I WOULD NEVER.

I am SO WITH YOU. I just. Ugh. Someone on my flist private-locked everything and asked us all to please not share any copies of hir fic that we might have, and I was all, "But I was going to rec that! Next week! :("

Like you say, entitled, and yet I feel that once it is on the internet it should be forever. :P

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about the internet is: all the stuff you wish to erase and banish from existence will be there FOREVER but all the stuff you really want to keep will end up disappearing. I know this from experience.

Sad truth.

Let me know how the Pinboard thing is! I haven't looked at it too closely, but I'm very curious to hear about your experience.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-09-28 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried glancing over the site and haven't found any reference to it yet, but I'm determined to make it happen. I'll keep you posted!

'Tis here. And hey, your one-time Pinboard fee even counts towards the first year of archiving!

[identity profile] rebcake.livejournal.com 2012-09-29 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
At times this might be my life's greatest sorrow.

In other news, my life probably isn't too bad.

Staaaaaay!

Hahaha, truth! I understand!

I will!

That definitely sucks. And the wayback machine doesn't work good with LJ.
I'm working so long on my rec post that another site did go and not come back. It really sucks to loose the stories.
It's better when the authors are in the archives too - some will hopefully survive.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-10-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't, which is tragic.

True, true. I'm glad my stuff is up on other sites, too.
