Also, I keep seeing classic literature in YA sections (because it's what's studied in school?), so I guess Jane Austen and Dickens and Hurston and the like are either too dumb for adults or share a lot in common with those that are? I tend to think YA vs. adult is often a marketing distinction and reflection of the age if the characters, etc. It can indicate reading level and explicitness, of course, but I don't think that's always the case, or that those things indicate quality, or that any of that means some of it shouldn't be enjoyed.
I actually tend to prefer YA genre fiction, because there are often complex themes without certain foibles (like the sci-fi story that was clearly written by and for engineers!). It's not universally true. But there ya go. :)
