some thoughts on some things i have watched recently
Y'all, if you ever for one moment thought that this journal was about anything other than TV, you were wrong.
+ Shupt Up! Flower Boy Band was so good. I did not expect it to be good.
I expected it to be entertaining but not good. BUT THEN IT WAS ENTERTAINING AND GOOD!
Y'all, it did not drag. The second half was as good as the first. Every single plot point and twist arose out of characters' choices that made sense and were in character and were realistic. I do not understand how a drama with such a silly name that's about a high school garage band could be so good. I really do not.
OH MY PRECIOUS BABY BOYS!!!!!!! I just love everyone in thisbaaaarpool hall!
Ji Hyuk is my love. During the first half I was practically screaming at the screen to explain to me how it was possible that he was so perfect. He screwed up during the second half, but the ways he screwed up were so understandable and while I put him on notice for a while, he pulled through. Such a good guy. I love a good guy. Not a nice guy. But a guy who is just good. And he is such a mama bear. The people he cares about absolutely come first and he will do anything for them.
I also didn't find him attractive at all at the outset, but he grew on me so much so now I think he's pretty much the hottest thing ever.
Also: his jawline in this shot is one of the hottest things I've ever seen:
I do not even know how that is possible. ROWR.
Most precious romance EVER award goes to these two losers:
They're so good to and for each other. Ji Hyuk screws up some in the middle, but I can't see these two as anything other than adorably functional. The way she lights up around him--even just getting a text from him!--and the way he tries to act gruff and like he does care but so obviously DOES. I cannot with these two. They make my heart want to burst.

And Suh Ah is pretty much the awesomest all on her own. Reserved, laid-back, but she has zero problem being straightforward about what she wants and she doesn't let people treat her badly. She stands up for herself. And she's brave as hell. I am very, very fond of her.

dangermousie, whose journal I've been lurking on, calls him) is my second favorite. He's fiercely proud and snarky and snarly and has so much anger. But he's also fiercely loyal and a good friend and an incredibly good big brother.
And sometimes he smiles like this:
Honestly, I feel a little guilty every time I look at him because he is so pretty. And I know he was 19 when filming, but I still feel like a dirty old lady every time I think, "That boy is going to be a sex god someday."
But how can I not when he looks at Ye Rim like this?
They were SO HOT together. I am eternally pissed that they never made out against a wall.
So cuuuuuute.
Do Il was also my second favorite. And not just because he's gorgeous (though he is).
But because he's another good guy, quiet and steady, and totally the peacemaker of the group. He's the one who tries to talk all the other guys down when they're being stupid. He's quietly empathetic and such a sweet, sweet guy.
And sometimes things like that happen and you know he'll be the best boyfriend ever.
I pretty much have no feelings on Ha Jin except that his relationship with Kyung Jong is the world's most adorable thing. When they fight and everyone's like, "Did you have a lovers' quarrel?" because they are joined at the hip and the sweetest.
Adorable friendship is adorable.
Kyung Jong is an adorable baby. He's what a teddy bear would be if it suddenly turned human. When he was alone in the karaoke on his birthday, I didn't know whether to laugh at the adorableness or cry. I mean, it was sad. BUT HE WAS SO CUTE I COULDN'T TAKE HIS SADNESS SERIOUSLY.
Basically: I love everything about this drama.

Favorite line in the whole thing:
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYS.
So that was the most ridiculous thing ever. I guess this is what happens when I don't have access to tumblr. Easter cannot come soon enough so that I can reblog all my kdrama loves!
+ Community this week gave me feelings, all of them centered around Abed and Troy. And they were like...serious feelings.
So Abed discovers that he can hire celebrity look-alikes to act out his favorite movies with him. So obviously he does this. And Troy is enchanted, obviously because: BFFs.
But then it turns out that Abed hasn't actually been paying for it, and the guy in charge of the look-alike company demands payment. He tells the crew they can dress up like celebrities and work off Abed's debt (Britta as Michael Jackson? BEST). The others aren't sure it's a great idea, but Troy gives them this speech about how there's no need for Abed to accept reality because the magic of his mind makes everyone else's lives better. It's lovely.
So the rest of them work off the debt, but then Troy comes home and finds Abed with more actors. Troy doesn't understand how Abed can't understand that this ISN'T OKAY. That his friends put themselves out for him--Abed points out (rightly) that the others wanted to do that. And they did. But Troy can't quite make him understand that he can't expect them to always want to do that.
Okay, I LOVELOVELOVE that when Abed asks Troy if he's mad, Troy says no--but anyone who can easily read others' emotions would see right through that. But this is Abed and he's on the spectrum, and so he takes Troy at his word. And Troy has to call him back and tell him the truth--because he's such a good friend--and Abed realizes that Troy lied to him. Now, most people wouldn't count this as a lie, but it is, especially in a relationship like theirs. And it clearly hurts Abed, even if he doesn't show it like most people would.
And then Troy tells him that sometimes he just has to listen to him (Troy) so that he (Abed) can function in the world. And Abed's like, "So you can do what you want but I can't do what I want?" And Troy asks him to trust him. And Abed says he can't. And Troy says that he'll have to trust that he can trust him (sorry with the pronouns). And Abed says he can do that.
And then Abed wants to play alone. AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO WEEP.
It was this compassionate moment of a portrayal of people with atypical minds. Because on the one hand: Abed's way of looking at the world really is beautiful and does make other peoples' lives more magical. But on the other hand, it can be a real problem when he has to deal with reality, and sometimes he is going to need to trust Troy, who loves him absolutely.
And it was compassionate to both of their perspectives: to how Abed genuinely doesn't understand, and to how Troy can be frustrated with that even as he celebrates it most of the time. And I just feel like you don't see something straightforwardly honest like that, that doesn't demonize either side, but shows that this is how people are. I loved it even as it broke my heart and made me feel very raw.
Basically:
Compassionate but honest depictions of atypical minds? WHO KNEW IT COULD HAPPEN ON TV?
Don't mind me: I just have a lot of feelings.
Clearly I am kind of overflowing with them.
