A random comment by mollivanders gave me an idea for a meme:

Give me a text (book, TV show, movie, etc.) and I will tell you what I would have done differently if I had written it. Not little details, necessarily, but big plot or theme or characterization choices.

I have so many feelings on this.

First of all, I would have told the story of the first war, and I would have focused on the Black sisters. Probably with Andromeda as the main character, but using the three of them to explore everything that happened during that war.

But if I had chosen to tell the story of the second war, I would have had Hermione be the main character because, as anythingbutgrey always says, the war is about her blood.

And finally, if I had written them with Harry as the main character, the books after OoTP (which I love) would have been about THE ACTUAL WAR instead of high school love triangles and camping. Like, the Order of the Phoenix would have been fighting and smuggling muggle-borns to safety and such. I wanted a war narrative, and I didn't get it. *wistful sigh*

You know, mostly I do love Harry and the story we get etc. But then I think about books that focus on the Black sisters or a Seventh book that was actually about the war (alt!trio!) and I get sad. So yes, I agree with all this. And more focus on Hermione and her position as a muggleborn in a war that is about killing muggleborns would have been good, yeah :/.

And sometimes I think 'oh well that's what fanfic is for' but then I go look and all I find is Harry/Draco porn. You gotta love fandom's priorities sometimes :P

I am a fan of the books. I love them loads. But I feel like there's so much wasted potential there! If I were ever to write an epic-length fanfic of any kind, it would be a rewrite of DH where the trio stay at Hogwarts and they and the Alt!Trio and the rest of the DA ACTUALLY FIGHT THE WAR. That is what I wanted to see.

I don't think I'll ever be able to actually do it (such a commitment!), but I am pleased to hear this nonetheless.
