tv because who am i

+ Y'all, I love Happy Endings so much. If you're not watching it you really should be. MAX THE BEAR. AND THEY WENT ALL THE WAY WITH IT. ON THE UNICYCLE. WITH THE HONEY. OMG. And Brad and Jane continue to be flawless! With the pretend-fighting when they're really telling each other how awesome they are! And Jane dated only black guys (oh, Jane, of course you did!). And Alex and Jane have their own language! AND ALEX IS SO STUPID AND SO LOVABLE SHE HAS TOTALLY WON ME OVER. I just love everyone in this bar, I can't even.

+ I felt like this week's Parks and Rec was a bit of a letdown. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the level of typical delight this show gives me. Plus, I really hate what they're doing with Ann/Tom. I liked the idea in theory, but she just seems so annoyed and hate-y all the time, and I want Ann to be happy. I had thought that he'd sort of win her over with his weird joy, but that doesn't seem to be happening. It just feels so much like settling, and I don't like that at all. On the other hand, the little bits we got of Donna in this episode were flawless. We need sooooooooo muuuuuuuuuch mooooooooooore Donna all the time. We really do.

+ I watched Delightful[/Sassy] Girl Choon-Hyang and it was one of those cases where I stayed for the OTP because they were delightful (heh), but the plot was just whatever. Okay, Choon-Hyang and Mong-Ryong ARE THE CUTEST. I love them both so much but especially Choon-Hyang because: best girl. Smart and ambitious and adorable and never judged for her ambition (the teasing about her being a money-grubber isn't even judgy!). And yes, there is something distinctly Ron-and-Hermione-esque about the two of them, with Choon-Hyang being smart and competent and Mong-Ryong being a slacker but smarter than he lets on and also only working hard at things if he feels he has a good reason. And I like how for most of the show he was the one just blatantly in love. I really love when the guy is the one who SHOWS HIS FEELINGS! and the girl is the one who's closed off. And I'm so fond of Ji Hyuk. He was the Wallace of Kdramas: best BFF! I was delighted when he became super successful!

On the other hand: DIE IN A FIRE PRESIDENT BYUN. At first I found it hard to hate him because: Uhm Tae Woong. BUT OMG HE IS THE MOST AWFUL. Like, seriously the worst ever. I don't know how you'd live with yourself if you were that way. I also did not like Chae Rin at all, which was sad, because I usually like at least feeling sympathy towards the Other Girl. But she was just awful enough that I couldn't. It wasn't like with Hyo Rin in Goong where I totally got her being torn between her dreams and Shin. I understood her, always. But Chae Rin was just basically terrible.

So I was there for the OTP and they were lovely enough that it didn't seem at all a waste of time to watch. Plus I liked the silly little historical interludes at the end of the episodes. TOO FUN.

+ Next up: Capital Scandal and probably City Hunter after that. And at some point I actually need to finish The X-files. And watch Breaking Bad and Justified. SO MUCH TV, Y'ALL.

It seems like everyone was whelmed by this week's Parks, and I'm not sure where the show went wrong. I know it wasn't quite up to its usual standard pre-Tom/Ann but I know that's not helping matters. Ann should be happy; why is this hard to understand? Have the Parks writers been watching Glee?

HAPPY ENDINGS IS MY HAPPY PLACE <3 Brad and Jane have knocked every other married couple out of the competition. I flailed so hard at their fake fighting. "I LOVE YOU." "I'LL SEE YOU AT HOME." "NAKED."

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-02-28 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, whelmed is definitely the way to phrase it. It just lacked its usual spark. AND POOR ANN.

I look forward to HE each week in ways I do few other shows.

BEST BEST BEST. I love the the writers understand that happy marrieds can be the BEST. Oh, those two!!!!

I just started watching Happy Endings! I'm testing it out to take the place of old-school HIMYM. So far, so good. I mean, it's a bit generic so far, but I really like the pace and the comedic chemistry of the group. And Brad and Jane are such an awesome TV couple.

As for P&R, I don't get what they're doing with Tom and Ann. I thought that two episodes ago, when he said he was finally going to be real, he would win over with some honesty, like he did with Lucy. But then he just did more gimmicky stuff that irritated her even more, until she finally said he wore her down. And she still seems super-irritated with him! It just seems like they didn't know what to do with the characters (I always get that sense with Ann actually, since she's sort of the straight man) so they decided to have them date. But I thought this show was better than that!

The show really picks up a little further on. It's like Cougar Town--once it drops the premise and just lets itself be about this group of people interacting and letting the humor arise from who they are, it really becomes a joy.

YES. I thought that's where it was going, and I was looking forward to it! There is a way to do these two right! This...is not right. It's bringing me down.

Parks & Rec was a bit less awesome than usual. But, I loved Donna. And--lord help me--the Ginuwine bit. Oh gurl. Ginuwine is Ginuwine. I love that my generation is writing all these TV shows now. It's like all the jokes are tailor made for me.

Plus, the other thing that made Parks delightful was Ben's face when he woke up in the middle of the night and he's all scrunched and says "surprise." Oh, scrunchy-faced Ben. How I love you.

But I'm with you on Ann/Tom. They really need to work on that. It was sort of cute at the Valentine's dance, because Tom was being funny in a different sort of way than normal. But, yeah. Now, Ann just seems frustrated.

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-02-28 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait. Ginuwine is an actual person? I really thought they made him up for the show. *hides face* I guess I'm an Ann.

I KNOOOOOOW. Not enough Ben this time, but what there was was DELIGHTFUL.

Exactly.

Wasn't Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang the one where four episodes or so from the end they had a time jump and SUDDENLY IT BECAME A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOW? All I do remember from it was that I did not enjoy it very much at all. Of all the Hong sisters dramas, it's my least favorite so far, though I'm not a huge fan of them in general - they tend to go too slapstick for my taste.

Next up: Capital Scandal and probably City Hunter after that.
Excellent choices! I approve! (Though you really should add another show starting with C to that list - Coffee Prince. Still my favorite kdrama of all time.)

Your fascination with Mawang has made me want to watch it a lot - maybe even enough to cue it up! Which I consider quite a feat since I haven't watched any kdramas since September, I think.

Yeah, it did have a time jump that was slightly jarring. If I wasn't so taken with the lead characters I probably would have hated the show, honestly.

Yes, I definitely agree with that. Main guy becomes the DA for Seoul--and ends up in all these fistfights? What? It's very silly.

I keep meaning to watch Coffee Prince! It's on my list!

If you do watch Mawang, I'd of course love to hear your thoughts. It really, really worked for me.

BWAHAHAHAHAA You've committed an Oh No No! You are indeed Ann!

Observe. The wonder that is Ginuwine:

In my mind, this song is forever connected with "This Is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan. I don't know why.

ALEEEEEEEEEX! What I've realize isn't that Alex is a dumb blonde, exactly, but sort of just... a special snowflake. A unique flower. A beautiful, prancing unicorn with a very individual point of view. She's more of a Phoebe than a Joey, basically. And she's my queen.

I thought P&R was an improvement over "Dave's Return", but I agree about Tom/Ann. It's so disappointing because I expect better from the show in terms of character-based developments (instead of plot-based ones), and showing instead of telling. And I definitely want her to be won over by his rare moments of sincerity and his enthusiasm for life instead of being worn down by his obnoxious behaviour. I need to see why they actually want to be together!

I still haven't found Mawang, but I've got City Hunter! Will probably watch it soon.

YES! She's gotten so great! I still might love Jane a tiiiiny bit more (because she comes with Brad), but I am just loving Alex to death now.

You might check under the name "The Devil" since that's what its American name is. I do hope you can find it! But I have heard SUCH GOOD THINGS about City Hunter and it's on my to-watch list, so we should talk after I watch it! Yay!

Ohhh wait, so I googled its English titles, and I DID see one of them somewhere! *excited*

I'm sure I've heard some of his stuff, but I'm notoriously bad about mainstream music. I just don't listen to the radio enough to know who people are.

But just in watching this video, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND why Tom loves this guy so much. This is such a Tom thing.
