lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([kd] the devil you know)

so i just finished 마왕 - Mawang

And it was this incredibly well-crafted and complicated exploration of vengeance and guilt and forgiveness and manipulation and lies and deception and how the past is never dead it isn’t even the past and also about how powerful free will is but that it can be just as much of a burden as it is a gift. And the ending was just…like, I cannot form words? It had to be that way, but OMG MY HEART.

And yet.

Most of all I’m just frustrated that it couldn’t end with the three main characters figuring out how tangled up in each other their lives are and just deciding that they might as well just become the world’s most epic/complicated threesome of emotionally-unstable-detective!boy/intuitive-and-psychic-librarian!girl/emotionally-closed-off-lawyer!boy who are all bound together through an epic backstory of blood and shared history.

Which is not even a spoiler, because there was no way any drama would end that way. But that’s still what I want. I would pay someone to write me a fic where that happened. No, I would literally pay for that.

I will probably have more to say about this later because it is just that good, but for now I'm going to pout about my lack of threesome.

I have no idea what show you're talking about but the way you described it reminded me of why I loved the Angel/Darla/Lindsey thing so much.

There are some fandoms where <>a threesome is clearly the only solution.

So of course I had to look this up in crunchyroll and of course now I'm going to watch it! Joo Ji Hoon pretty much owns my heart.

but for now I'm going to pout about my lack of threesome.

This. This is how I felt for the first half of Goong and just about ALL of City Hunter...You really should try out CH next if you haven't already. It's one of the few kdramas on Netflix and it's pretty much amazing. The love triangle is pretty similar to what you are describing here. Plus... who doesn't want to watch Lee Min Ho kick some ass?

IT IS SO GOOD. I am sooooo excited that you want to watch it, I cannot even tell you.

Joo Ji Hoon really, really gets a chance to act in this. And since you've seen Goong, you know he's great at the cold facade thing, and he gets to put that to fantastic use here.

I was never really crazy about Yul? So I didn't want a threesome in Goong. But I definitely have City Hunter on my list--I have heard some excellent things about it.

It took Roomie and I a long while to get invested in the Shin/Chae Kyung romance... I think it's because I was just coming off Playful Kiss and was just tired of the "cold facade thing" ... but he grew on me.

IT IS SO GOOD.

I can't wait now. Roomie and I were going to watch Lie to Me next, I think - basically because we <3 Yoon Eun-hye SO HARD. But I really trust your judgement - your post on Goong was what got me interested in Kdramas in the first place, even though I started with Boys Over Flowers, because it was available on Netflix.

I can totally see why having just watched Playful Kiss would affect that. I really loved the main girl from PK, but I never thought the boy she loved deserved her. I totally watched that show just for her and her adorableness. I wanted them to end up together purely because that's what she wanted; I never loved him on its own.

I have this incredibly big narrative kink for married couples who fall in love (it may be my ULTIMATE narrative kink), so I was ready to ship Shin/Chae Kyung right off the bat.

OMG ME TOO. PERFECT GIRL. Lie to Me is definitely on my list to watch. I'm excited about it!

This thrills me!

You certainly don't--Goong was mine!

Ah! So. Kim Hyun Jung is pretty much our favorite of all the pretty things, so I suffered through Playful Kiss just for his pretty face... and he made me so mad!

I do now.

OMG ME TOO. PERFECT GIRL

THIS GIRL AND HER FACE! She could make me kink ANYTHING! Have you seen her Coffee Prince?

Boys Over Flowers will always be closest to my heart of hearts. Just hearing the soundtrack fills me up. I don't know what I would've done had Goong been mine - probably wouldn't have been able to breath for a month.

He is pretty! But his character was terrible!

I'm so glad you came around to shipping Shin/Chae Kyung. FAVORITE KIDS.

THIS GIRL AND HER FACE! She could make me kink ANYTHING!

I KNOOOOOOOOOOW. She's flawless. I haven't seen Coffee Prince, but it is very high on my to-watch list.

I don't know what I would've done had Goong been mine - probably wouldn't have been able to breath for a month.

I still get emotional when I think about it.

Poor thing gets such bizarre reviews! Generally her audience hates her at first and then loves her at the end of the run.

FEELINGS.

Really? I did not know this. I know nothing about the reviews. Well, the people writing them are silly. She is wonderful!

You really like this show, y/y?

I'm mostly pleased that I can now, after a week or so of not-very-industrious studying, read the title in Korean. (Did you know it is a phonetic script and not congee? I didn't until I got here. But there are only 28 letters and you can actually learn to read and pronounce them with not that much work.) But I digress. To the point: this looks really good and I am considering it as my first foray into K-dramas. Would you say this is a good choice, or should I start with something lighter?

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it very much! I will warn you--it's a revenge drama to the core, so it's not light. But I think it's well worth watching. It just depends on what you're wanting at the moment. If you prefer something lighter, you could try Goong or Coffee Prince or something along those lines. But if you're willing to go in for the psychological thriller type, this is a fantastic place to start. And it feels really accessible to me.

I didn't know all that! That's really interesting, and it makes me want to do some studying, because I know I'm pronouncing things wrong even when they're Anglicized. Great to know!
