The anti-meme

[livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly  got me to thinking in this post (I may have derailed it while I worked some things out in my mind; apologies if I did).  About the fact that, as I said in previous post, shipping to me is just adoring the dynamic between two people--with a romantic or sexual aspect added to that.  But there are lots and lots of relationships I just adore that I don't think of as necessarily sexual or romantic at all, but who I just want to watch together onscreen (or read together on the page).

So I decided to rebel against the limitations of shipping, and this is my list of characters whose interactions make me ridiculously happy (again, sticking to TV and Harry Potter).

1.   Spike and Angel (Buffyverse)  [This one is totally first.  And above all.]
2.  Mal and every single person on his crew (Firefly) [Is that cheating?  Sorry.]
3.  The Doctor and Donna (Doctor Who) [Sort of the Doctor and anyone, but I really, really like Donna.  They just adore each other.  It's wonderful.]
4.  The Non-Judging Breakfast Club - Blair, Serena, Chuck, and Nate (Gossip Girl)
5.  Kendall and Cassidy (Veronica Mars) [I think I'm the only person to write fic about these two, but it's irresistible.]
6.  Spike and Dawn (Buffyverse) [My biggest regret about S7 is that the writers didn't let them reconcile.  CURSE YOU, WRITERS!]
7.  Spike and Sam (Press Gang) [She's like a female version of him!  They never interacted nearly enough.]
8.  Gaius and Head!Six (Battlestar Galactica) [I'd forgotten how much until the finale.  That's the one good thing the finale gave to me.  And okay, I may ship them just a bit.]
9.  The Fab Four - Veronica, Logan, Lilly, Duncan (Veronica Mars)
10.  The Fanged Four - Spike, Angel(us), Darla, Drusilla (Buffyverse)

Then, I also have a mild obsession with close families.  I need to write more family!fic because I looooove it.  These are the ones who make me happiest:

1.  Dean and Sam (Supernatural) [I haven't watched any of S4 yet, and I've kind of wandered away from my interest in the show, but I still love them).
2.  The Black Family (Harry Potter) [Oh, the fic I've written.]
3.  Simon and River (Firefly)
4.  Veronica and Keith (Veronica Mars)
5.  Tommy and Kevin (The Black Donnellys)

There are probably others I'm missing on this list, but that's who popped into my head.

Things I've noticed:  I just really, really like Spike(s). ;)

Oooh, I love you. That is so very accurate. I definitely ship plenty of characters with absolutely no romantic aspect.

Let's see..as far as trends I notice...well, I wish I knew all of these, but it seems to me that you enjoy a dynamic that involves at least a little snark. (I'm answering both lists in this comment, btw, lol). I mean, Veronica/Logan? Ron/Hermione? Sam and Dean? Veronica and Keith? The cast of Firefly in general? These people play off each other and banter and it's never, ever simple. I think that's the other thing I notice about relationships you like - they seem to be deeply complex, nothing surface level, or "guilty pleasure-ish," if you will. Kendall and Cassidy is a HARD thing to ship (or at least it would be for me) but you find it irresistible and write intriguing fic about it. It's never just black and white for you, and I like that.

Okay, I'm done babbling. In general, this is great and I'm glad you included characters outside of romantic pairings. :D

A lot of times platonic!ships are more fun cuz you don't have that constantly "will they sleep together" thing hanging over your head. You can just enjoy the moment, you know?

Yeah, definitely all about the snark with me. Snark or very, very stable married couples.

These people play off each other and banter and it's never, ever simple. Yup. I loves it.

they seem to be deeply complex, nothing surface level, or "guilty pleasure-ish," if you will. That's really cool to hear, honestly.

It's never just black and white for you, and I like that.
Yeah, definitely not.

And no apologies. I love it when you babble. ;)

I love your family fics. Only because they're nothign like my familya nd I love the retreat into a secret world that is all pretty words and completley mystifyingness. This is Lauren's writing. I love it.

1. I love those fics. Not especially the slash ones, but the ones where they're just together. Talking, relating in old vampirey ways.

1. DEAN AND SAM! This is a must!
2. Oh so I'm not the only one obsessed. Thank goodness.

You are so, so great, you know that? I really do love family fic, too. I should write more of it and soon.

1. Exactly, exactly.

Definitely not the only one. The Black family owns my soul. For serious.
