lirazel: An outdoor scene from the film Picnic at Hanging Rock ([h] and you're not even that nice)

today is a spammy sort of day

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Well, BtVS and I are always going steady—I’m married to that show. But other than that…I have lots of fandoms. It’s a thing that I do. Check out my icons to get some idea of just how many. There are a lot.

2. Your favourite films watched this year?
I mostly watched TV, not movies, but I saw Exit Through the Gift Shop and Jane Eyre this year, and they were both excellent Oh, and Attack the Block! Such fun!

3. Your favourite book(s) read this year?
All of the Queen’s Thief books back at the beginning of the year and also Cotillion. As for nonfiction, I loved You Are Not a Gadget and am currently reading The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, which is BADASS.

4. Your greatest musical discovery?
Uhhh…was Marina this year? I feel like she was this year for me. The In the Heights soundtrack, definitely. Also the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

5. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Probably “Rolling in the Deep” just because my sister played it nonstop for a while. But honestly, I don’t listen to the radio other than the classic rock station and NPR, so I don’t ever know any of the “popular” songs anymore now that I’m not in school. Back then, I would hear them just from being around people. But the same thing doesn’t work at work, apparently.

6. Your favourite TV show(s) of the year?
Friday Night Lights, Doctor Who (whatever, y’all. I still loved it), The Hour, Parks and Rec, Borgias, Skins, Pan Am, and Leverage. I think. I'm probably missing something.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Downton Abbey, probably? And hearing about the casting changes on Being Human.

7. Your tv boyfriend(s) of the year?
Ben Wyatt, definitely. With bonus Alec Hardison, Rory Williams, Troy Barnes, Matt Saracen, Smash Williams, Brad Williams and Freddie Lyon. Apparently I have a thing for guys with the last name Williams? Interesting.

8. Your tv girlfriend(s) of the year?
Buffy, always. Dana Scully, Bel Rowley, Miranda, Amy Pond, Colette Valois, River Song, Leslie Knope, Fiona Gallagher, Grace Violet Blood, and Lucrezia Borgia

9. Biggest tv squee moment(s) of the year?
Every single moment of Parks and Recreation, Freddie quoting poetry to Bel (and then JUMPING ON THE BED TIMES), River and Eleven getting married, Eli Gold existing, every time Mark Sheppard popped up on a TV show, Colette’s face, Rich proposing to Grace, everybody toasting Edith, any time Hardison and Parker breathed near each other, any time Katherine Pierce did anything at all, Damon calling Elena Buffy, etc.

And these are only the things that actually made me squee as opposed to just generally great moments.

10. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I miss Harry Potter fandom. I really do.

11. The fandom/show you haven't tried but want to?
Breaking Bad is number one. And finishing Avatar: the Last Airbender, which I’ve only seen the first half of the first season of. But there are lots more that I really don’t need to get into here. Oh, and Justified! It's going to happen! I promise!

12. Your biggest anticipation for the new year?
To quote [livejournal.com profile] muneca_brava New Being Human! New Shameless! New Skins! New Vampire Diaries! And I will add: New Borgias! New Doctor Who eventually! New The Hour maybe! ET CETERA ET CETERA AND SO FORTH.

Yay meme! Do you think Harry Potter fandom will start again when a new bunch of people read it? (I ask partly because I plan to read it at some point, and I'm hoping that there will be some others who waited til the phenomenon had passed.) Or do you think it's something that was too tied to the moment to inspire a next generation?

I don't think it'll ever be the way it was as the books were coming out, no. That was...an interesting time, in both good and bad ways. But yes, I think there will always be new fans coming to the series and since the Harry Potter world was made for fanfiction, I think there will be a fandom presence, if a much smaller one.

am currently reading The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, which is BADASS.

DUDE. Okay, now I really do need to make a more in-depth post about it so we can hash it all out. Where are you right now?

Also, how surprised/flattered am I that three of your four favorite book were things I recommended? Quite a lot, that's how much!

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Downton Abbey, probably?

And I need to make a post about this, too, because I'm anxious to hear your thoughts. Maybe I'll manage to do that today.

Yes! Make a post! He's just finished talking about the three-pronged development of dispensationalism/the Holiness movement/Pentecostalism and the affect that had on approaches to intellectualism. Next up, I think, is him going into detail about why all this matters. Just like you said, I am indeed having recognition shock. My favorite thing so far (besides his kind of adorable fanboying for Johnathan Edwards and his insistence that the man was more than "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"--which I have always heard but haven't had time to investigate myself) is when he talked about how fundamentalists refuse to acknowledge that culture/history could have anything to do with how we approach the Bible. Because: YES. I run into this all the time. My denomination totally took to heart the idea that if you were really reasonable, you'd come up with exactly the same ideas we've come up with, no matter when or where you're living. So.

Anyway, I'll get into that lots more when you make your post.

You have fantastic taste! I feel like I need to return the favor! But I really haven't read all that much this year, so I'll have to make an effort to come up with some good stuff for you this next year. I do think you'd find You Are Not a Gadget interesting, though.

I have Downton Abbey thoughts! And yes, I would be willing to share.

YES. IMO, this is why evangelical spec fic is mostly awful. There's just not enough flexibility in the doctrine as a lot of people understand it to accommodate aliens or telepathic dragons or space travel or any other culture but ours. Which is a pretty tangential concern, but one I've given a lot of thought. :)

Anyway, I'll get into that lots more when you make your post.

Hurrah. Okay, maybe this'll inspire me to actually go write it now. Which will mean going back and rereading some of the book - not exactly a hardship.

So many of your squee moments are ones hat I should have added as well!

I've started on the Queen's Thief series because of you and [livejournal.com profile] vega_ofthe_lyre actually. So far I've only read The Thief but I'm gonna order the others once I have more money for books :) So thanks for that ;)

Yes finish Avatar! The first bit of the first season was frankly too childish for me, but the show really matured as the series progressed and the characters oh my god.

I concur with this! Shit gets so real later.
