Dear Yuletide Writer
Dear Yuletide Writer,
Hello! First of all, I just want to say that I truly hope that you enjoy the writing process; in my experience, the writing is the best part of Yuletide, so knowing that someone out there is having a great time writing something for me gives me more than a little Yuletide cheer!
Now, as for the guidelines for my chosen fandoms, I really like het and gen stuff, and my absolute favorite thing in the world is strong characterization. I’m open on what kind of situations you put the characters in, so long as they’re true to themselves. I like plotty stuff and character studies, beautiful prose and experimental stuff--basically I'll follow you anywhere as long as the characters are real. If you keep that in mind, I have no doubt that you'll produce something I'll love.
I'm not a fan of too much smut--exploring sex or how it affects a relationship is fine with me for any of the fandoms where I requested something het, but please focus on the emotions, not the explicit physicality. And if you do go the romance direction, know that what I love most of all is people showing love in ways other than the words "I love you." With Nick and Nora, it's banter and silliness (though of course I'm not adverse to them using the l word--they're married, after all), with Shin and Chae-Kyeong it's Shin's subtle ways of trying to show he cares and Chae-Kyeong's open-heartedness. Paul and Elizabeth I'm not as sure about because they haven't ever met in canon, but they could find their own way, I'm certain.
Designing Women
-gen fic, any of the main ladies, plus Anthony, Bernice, and whoever else you want to throw in there.
I love this cast. Love it. I love Julia’s fierce monologues and Mary Jo’s good humor and sense and Suzanne’s clueless self-involvement and Charlene’s sweet dimness. Basically, it’s a love fest. I’m totally easy on whichever characters you want to use. Banter and wit and unadultered Southerness and feminism are all most welcome. I don’t have a lot of guidelines for this one, actually, because everything about it is just so enjoyable. So let your mind run wild, because these characters being themselves in the same room will always result in delightfulness.
The Thin Man
-gen or Nick/Nora, Nick and Nora Charles, plus Asta, little Nicky and anyone else.
I grew up on these movies, and Nick and Nora are my all-time OTP. Anything that involves them being witty and sparkling and silly and drunk and sophisticated and in love will make me happy. I am also especially fond of the scenes at the end of the films where Nick gathers all the suspects in one room and gets people to talk until someone gives themselves away. Or maybe you want to write about how they met and fell in love or a fic about them when they’re old. I don’t care, as long as they’re interacting and being wonderful.
Goong
-het or gen, Chae-Kyeong, Shin, etc.
Anything involving Chae-Kyeong and Shin will make my happy; I love the two of them together. Feel free to bring in any of the other characters--Grandma is my favorite. Something that fits into the canon of the show or that happens after the show would be lovely. I’d love something where they see Yool again and he can be happy for them, or something where Grandma was right and Chae-Kyeong is pregnant. I am especially fond of any time Shin pretends to be exasperated with Chae-Kyeong but he’s really hiding fondness. I also love watching the two of them try to navigate what being royalty actually means and what their obligations to tradition and duty are. I hope that inspires some ideas! Though, again, I’m very open to whatever scenarios you want to explore.
Anne of Green Gables
- het or gen, Elizabeth Grayson and Paul Irving.
Okay, these are the two characters I picked because I have always thought that these two are soul mates, in as much as I believe in such a thing. They are both passionately in love with beauty and art, and they look at the world in such gorgeous ways. They love the world of imagination and the exploration of fantasy, they’re both sensitive and good. I would, of course, love a fic where they fall in love, but if you’d like to go the gen route, that’s more than all right with me. Perhaps Anne does some matchmaking, or maybe they find each other after the War and help each other heal (if you go with that scenario, bonus points if you can throw Rilla and/or Ken in there somehow. Actually, guest-starring roles from absolutely any of LMM’s characters would make me dance with joy. I feel like this is a great opportunity for a crossover; maybe Paul and Emily Starr are literary friends of some sort. Go crazy if you feel like it!), or perhaps she falls in love with his poetry and finds out Anne knows him and writes a letter. Really, what I want is these two kindred spirits finding their way to each other, because I can’t imagine a meeting between them being anything other than perfect.
I'm also providing you with a link to a list of my kinks and squicks--the things that I love and the things I don't. You can try to integrate any of the former into the fic or disregard the list completely, but I thought it might be helpful to you. And it got a little long, so you don't have to read it at all if you don't have the time/inclination. :D
Again, thanks so much for volunteering to write me a story, and I truly hope you enjoy doing so.
Happy Yuletide!
