So I finally got around to watching the Supernatural Christmas episode....
And it was pretty great. For some reason, though, it felt shorter than typical episodes. I know it wasn't, but it felt that way. Maybe because I really wanted to keep watching the boys be almost sentimental without really getting mushy. Oh, boys. I love you.
So yeah. I really enjoyed the Supernatural twist with the gore and yet the embracing of Christmas anyways. It just really worked for the show.
First off, the Dean not knowing "who" Mary Poppins was is classic. I always love being reminded of just how out of it Dean is (like with the myspace thing last season) and then finding out the things he is up on. I always picture Dean watching a lot of late night TV, so he's seen like every horrible B-movie ever and he reads a ton of comic books, but other than that, he has no idea about the basics of pop culture. And I find it endearing that Sam obviously made it a point, probably before and after Stanford, to learn about all those things. It's very Sam.
The whole part at the run-down Christmas village was hilarious. I was dying laughing at the look that elf girl gave them when Sam said they were "just there to look." And then with the fake caroling--my stomach hurt I laughed so hard. And it's always fun when the boys pretend to be/are mistaken for being gay--Sam's "Yummy" was so unconvincing, but it was just priceless, too. Dean, you take far too much joy in watching your brother suffer.
I kind of love that it was that creepily-cheerful-and-jolly couple that was doing the killing. I was expecting it to be the mentioned Anti-Claus, but it just worked better this way. The fact that they still stayed so perfectly genial even while torturing the boys made it even creepier. And speaking of torture, I think this may have been one of the goriest episodes--or at least I winced and looked away the most in this one. Like the fingernail thing?!?!?! Are you kidding me? That was way too intense for me to handle. But I looooved Dean and his wishing Sammy a merry Christmas while all that was going on. And the using the Christmas tree to kill the gods.
But, like all the best Supernatural episodes, the real joy of the show was watching the boys interact. The idea of wee!Dean trying so desperately to protect Sammy but then being unable to lie to him about what their dad was really doing. And then lying again to make Sam think that John really came home for Christmas. It tore my heart out.
And I just about started bawling my eyes out when I realized that Sam was giving Dean the amulet. I kind of always had this vague idea in the back of my mind that Dean had had one close call that was just too close and so he wore the amulet to prevent that sort of thing from happening again. But the idea that he never takes it off because Sam gave it to him is so much better. I love that.
At the beginning of the episode, I kept getting mad at Sam because Dean so clearly wanted a Christmas and Sam was refusing. I was practically yelling at the screen (my computer screen, not the TV) that it was Dean's last Christmas and Sam better make it a special one! And then when they had the talk and Sam admitted that he just couldn't go through with it for the very reason that Dean wanted to....Just when I think I can't love these boys any more....
And the ending was perfect. The gifts were hilarious (and I always love it when Dean calls the Metallicar his baby) and so the boys and just them sitting together, watching the game, with their pathetic little tree that was so incredibly A Charlie Brown Christmas...It was so sweet. But they didn't give in to the sentimentality, didn't say all the things they wanted to say. They didn't really need to. And I love that about them.
